Autumn sat outside, watching the various students around herself. They gathered together in groups and as she watched, she noticed the patterns taking place. The athletes hung with the other athletes, the pretty girls with the expensive bags and phones chatted together and even the nerds with their comics and taped glasses had a place.
So why did she feel so out of place? She sighed and stretched her legs out, leaning back against the bench she shivered slightly, pulling her sweatshirt closer to herself. The snow glittered brilliantly from the sun and it just gave the whole schoolyard an almost magical look. Too bad she couldn't enjoy it as much as she would like to.
She hummed softly, her bag sitting in her lap, watching the teenagers passing by, chatting and laughing with each other. She wished to be able to do the same but alas, she didn't have the courage to speak up. Shivering she blew on her hands and rubbed them together before pulling her hair down more over her ears, trying not to fall into a fit of coughs. She was lucky her nurse wasn't around or she'd be in serious trouble. This cold winter air wasn't the greatest environment for her but this was her first day and she... well she wanted to take in the sights.
She pulled her cell phone from her pocket and glanced at the time, knowing sooner classes would start and then she would be stuck in a room with twenty or so people that she didn't know and wouldn't be able to find her voice to speak to. At least she had her books. She didn't mind hiding away in the library during lunch and classwork would keep her busy for the rest of the day. Perhaps her fiery red hair would go unnoticed with her unfamiliar face. Maybe she would just disappear into the walls.
She shook her head and sighed, smiling softly to herself. She couldn't, shouldn't think so negatively. She would make friends, she would get good grades and she wouldn't get really sick again. These were her resolutions and were the promises she made to herself as she stood, slinging her messenger bag over one shoulder, walking towards the entrance to get out of the cold.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, background-color:#f4f4f4; width:400px; padding:8px; border: 8px solid #9b6464;] she‘s had all she can take SOMETHING’S GOTTA MAKE ME FEEL ALIVE. I DON‘T KNOW WHERE IT IS BUT SOMETHING‘S GOTTA GIVE
Natalie was just now starting to feel normal when at school. She didn’t jump when people accidentally grazed her and didn’t look over her shoulder. At least while here. When around the town she still would though it was rare she was alone. Everything had only happened in September so people shouldn’t expect her to be over her kidnapping so easily. Still, some thought she should be able to. The power of prayer was used around. Yes, prayer was helpful but Natalie went through a traumatic event. She still had nightmares and shook when in the church outside of Sunday services. When in there while it was empty for more then ten minutes she had a severe panic attack. She knew she shouldn’t but she couldn’t help it. The feeling just overcame her and she couldn’t stop it.
When she got to school, Natalie stopped by the office. Apparently they had a new girl at the school who was in Natalie’s grade. Though things were hard for her at times, she was still willing to help show people around. Standing by the office window, the secretary pointed her out to Natalie. A pretty red headed girl with pale skin. Natalie made a couple mor moments of small talk before she headed outside, bundling her scarf around her. Since the incident, she took even more care to be covered up. She felt violated after that though nothing terrible in that sense was done to her. A kiss through the duct tape but that was it.
As Natalie scuffled about outside, she did a sweep around. Though she didn’t look around as constantly, she couldn’t help but look to make sure she did know the people who were around. Not noticing anything unusual, she continued forward to the bench. After her whole ordeal, she was cautious when approaching others. Her head dipped down slightly and Natalie put on a weak smile. Since that September night, nothing about her was the same. Not her smile nor the way she carried herself. Yes, she was still modest and took mind of her manners but now she shrank herself down more then normal. Before she had no problems walking through these halls, proud of her faith and morals. Now, none of that seemed to matter.
Attempting to catch Autumn’s eye, she smiled. ”Hi there. I’m Natalie. I’m supposed to show you around.” Natalie straightened herself up and gripped at her bag. ”Can I sit with you?”

Autumn blinked and glanced up at the newcomer, smiling softly at the young lady. She seemed... off. Like her whole aura and personality and shifted slightly to the left. Not exactly completely different but... what was the word... oh damaged. Autumn's eyes filled with concern for a moment as she realized this young lady was a kindred spirit, a wild mustang broken.
She opened her mouth momentarily before closing it, flushing a bit as her shyness overcame her. "Hello, yes, please sit." She shifted over on the bench to give her more room to sit, settling her bag on her lap as she patted the spot next to her, offering it up to Natalie. "Its a pleasure to meet you Natalie. My name's Autumn, yes like the season." She giggled softly and brushed her red hair back from her face.
"Thanks for showing me around. I know that can't be particularly fun or anything but I... am hopelessly lost around here. Do I look really new?" She glanced down at her.. rather expensive clothes and suddenly felt like she stuck out like a sore thumb. She glanced around at the students milling about, feeling like maybe they were staring a little. But were they staring at her or her new companion?
"I got my class list here somewhere..." She murmured, opening her messenger bag and looking for the paper that had been sent to her house. "I'm not really sure where to start but I have.. no idea where any of my classes are."

Natalie kept her soft smile on her face as she slipped her bag over her head, setting it on her lap as she settled on the bench. When she got settled, she was far from comfortable. Natalie no longer sat in a relaxed position but one ready to move in needed. That was no way for anyone to live but she wanted to be able to get away quickly if she had to. Her thought process was irrational but when one went through what she did everything changed. Natalie was even going to take some self defense courses after the New Year when they started up. Yes, the girl who was against violence wanted to be able to protect herself. She no longer wanted to take the chance of being a victim. Even if that same person who took her never came back, eventually she’d move out of her father’s house. She needed to be able to protect herself when out there living on her own.
Natalie laughed lightly at the joke, nodding her head with amusement. ”Cute. The secretary told me your last name is Sommer. That’s a really, um, unique name.” Her eyes came together towards her nose while a genuine grin came on her face. Living in this small town, unique names were rare. Or at least as unique as Autumn’s name was. Her hair was a fiery color like the leaves in the fall season. It was odd how fitting it was. Her face settled back to normal, her smile fading. That was one feature often gone from her face. It took something truly amusing or someone who was really close to bring it out in her again. Not having many close friends didn’t help to relieve the stoic face she kept.
Natalie shrugged. ”I don’t mind it. I like being able to meet new people. Especially people who don’t know me.” Natalie’s cheeks flushed. That made her sound almost awful with how she said that. From what she understood Autumn’s family just moved here. Or moved back? She wasn’t fully listening as she had been focusing on the girl’s schedule instead. She did know they had first period AP English together which made it easy to show her to the first place. ”After a couple days you’ll have the layout down. We’re a fairly small school so you’ll develop a system for moving around." She glanced at Autumn and shrugged. ”I mean your clothes look a lot nicer then some kids around here. Though some of the preppy girls might zone in on you and try to wrangle you into their clique.” Natalie didn’t know about Autumn’s previous schooling and if she was a popular girl once before. She very well could’ve been and after Natalie helped her they wouldn’t speak again. Something Natalie was used to so she could move past it. She had even had close friends leave her behind. That hurt worse then someone she had just met.
Natalie grabbed a paper out of a just under the flap of her bag. ”Oh don’t worry. Mrs. Myers gave me your schedule so I knew where to go. I’m actually in your first class so that will be easy enough to get to.” Natalie glanced around and shot a group of students a look. Whether they were looking at her or Autumn didn’t matter, they had no business staring at anyone. ”You want me to show you around the school? I mean I’ll be allowed to leave my classes early to meet you but I can show you to the important places like the cafeteria.” Natalie attempted a lame joke to break the tension. Well, the tension she felt which hardly left her body. Still, her and her therapist said that humor might be a good way to help her ease herself when in stressful or new situations. Natalie had never been one big on joking around so most of her attempts were seriously awful. Most people didn’t hear them anyways as a good chunk were uttered under her breath, made for only her to know.

Autumn smiled and nodded slowly. "Yeah its my parents idea of a joke I suppose. Wait till you find out what my middle name is you'll really laugh." She was glad to see this girl was... happy? I guess that wasn't the right word because she didn't really seem truly happy. Maybe she was just relaxing a little, content even? Whatever it was, Autumn was glad to help, Natalie seemed like she needed a friend and Autumn knew for sure she could use one as well.
"I can't imagine why someone wouldn't want to get to know you though. You seem very nice." It was true, she didn't seem like someone who was... well to put it blunt, a bitch. Then again we all had secrets. "I feel so out of place but I know I'll figure it out, puzzles have always amused me. I don't want to say I'm brilliant but..." She giggled and pulled her jacket closer to her body, obviously just kidding around with her.
She blinked and glanced down at her outfit, not even remembering what she had been wearing. Autumn had simply grabbed whatever looked good in her closet. Granted it was a rather large closet filled with only brand name clothes but still... "Oh I... didn't realize..." Perhaps that's what everyone was staring at, they realized she had money. "I'm not really looking for a clique..." She said honestly, flushing slightly as she glanced at Natalie. "I just want to make friends... I... I've been home-schooled my entire life so I'm not really sure how this public school thing works.. I honestly just want to fit in." With her fiery red hair, perfect grade point average, a sickness that brings her to her knees and boat loads of money she could hardly just 'fit in' though.
She bit her bottom lip and gave a sad smile to Natalie, shivering and standing up. "Well I guess now is better than ever." She said simply, shouldering her bag. "I think looking for the caf sounds like a brilliant plan. Although other than gym I think its the thing I look forward to the least. Oh... um if we end up having lunch together, do you mind sitting with me?" She asked, batting her crystal blue eyes at her teasingly.

Natalie got a perplexed look on her face as she inquired with, ”What’s your middle name?” Natalie had a feeling this girl would fit in very well with any group of people. She was very open to alking ot people and was pretty. In a school like this that was all that mattered. No matter how small or large a school was cliques would always exist. To say that they didn’t would be ignorant. That’s what made it so hard for Natalie to find a niche. Sure, she had friends from church but not all of them liked to talk to her in school as some were fairly popular. Just because one went to church didn’t mean they kept their values as high as Natalie did.
”Thank you.” Autumn was genuinely sweet which helped Natalie to relax a little more. She really couldn’t be tense since she was supposed to be showing her around after all. ”But a lot of it has to do with me being the pastor’s daughter. I don’t exactly fit in either most people.” Natalie shrugged nonchalantly. Long ago she had accepted that fact of people not wanting to get to know her. Just the whole new issue was hard to wrap her head around. ”Well until you find your place we can be loners together.” Natalie tried her best to put on a stiff, but goofy, face. It just felt unnatural as she did it. Most things did nowadays. She hook the face off before she laughed. ”You don’t want to say but you’re just saying, correct?” Natalie teased. To her it was ok to be a little proud of certain accomplishments and if this girl was smart then she should be proud enough about it.
Natalie’s face dropped a little as she picked at a loose thread on her jacket. It was a hand me down that someone had given her father to give to her. If Autumn wanted to make friend Natalie really wasn’t the one that she hung around. Her body winced slightly at the thought as her voice dropped several levels. She studied the loose thread intently as she spoke up with her words carefully said. Oh how she hated to act so depressed like this all the time. ”Well if you want to fit in I’m n-not the best person to be around.” Natalie pulled out her phone and spun it around one hand to try to calm her nerves. They had taken over and had started in her hands with slight tremors. She breathed in and out of her nose slowly as she got her heart rate down. The fact she had an object to make her hands “focus“ on helped things out. ”I’m kind of the freak show around here, at least for the last couple months. If you want to fit in, even if you don’t want to be popular, you stay away from the freak shows. So, um, what are you interested in? I may be able to point you to people with similar interests.” No Natalie’s nerves weren’t going this way because she felt like she was losing the potential at a new friend. When something stressful overtook her body, mainly a “trigger” that made her think of that night or something that had happened since, her body went into protective mode. This was how it protected itself. Once her body started to tremble like that eventually her breathing became shallow and she passed out.
Natalie stood up and gathered her things. After she tightened to cloth belt of her jacket Natalie slipped her bag over her head and handed Autumn the freshly printed schedule. ”Here takes this in case you can’t find yours. Just try not to lose it this time so I can help you,” Natalie teased. Her body tensed as she started to take a few steps. ”Oh, uh...” Natalie wasn’t really sure to say. Half the time she just sat in a window in the cafeteria trying to make herself small and unseen by the others. ”Yeah we can if we want. I have D lunch. You?” Eventually Autumn would make new friends and move on so it’d all be good. As they reached the doors Natalie opened the door for her and sent a cautionary glance over her shoulder. ”As for gym our two teachers, Mrs. Garrison and Mr. Black are great. They aren’t drill sergeants or anything. Unless you’re on the basketball teams then they’re harsh but basketball is a big deal around here.”

Autumn flushed slightly, her cheeks looking bright against her pale skin and matching her long, curly hair. Clearly her name was a little embarrassing but she smiled still, enjoying a good laugh at her own expense now and again. "Its Wynter. Spelled with a 'y'. So my full name is Autumn Wynter Sommer." She giggled softly and shrugged. "I like to tell people my parents must have been drunk when they named me."
Autumn smiled softly and shrugged, apparently not caring if she was a Pastor's daughter or not. Hell she could've been born a crack baby and Autumn wouldn't care as long as you were a nice and good person at heart. Autumn didn't think it was her business or place to judge another person on how they were raised or lived their life. But personality and how you treated someone else? Autumn would judge anyone on that till the cows came home. "I don't see how that should make a difference. Its not like you have the plague or something."
She couldn't help but grin a bit. "Yeah I might be a little smart..." Actually she could probably go off to college already if she wanted to. Heck, probably could have gone off to college a few years ago. She was, indeed, brilliant. "I just study a lot, I'm addicted to learning new things, its pretty strange."
Autumn blinked as her new friend's mood seemed to change right in front of her. Was it something she had said? She didn't mean to offend her in anyway. She watched Natalie, noticing a few things like the way she fidgeted and tensed. Something was definitely off with this girl and Autumn found herself wanting to help her. She knew how it felt to be alone and scared among other things. "I don't think its worth fitting in if I have to lose good friends along the way. Being popular is all good and well but I don't want to lose any part of myself to become popular. I would rather be an outcast for being me than being popular and becoming something I'm not."
Autumn found herself reaching over, lightly resting her hand on Natalie's in an attempt to comfort her, even if slightly. "Hey... freakshow or not, I won't abandon you because you think I could fit in elsewhere. Everyone loves to see the circus but no one wants to be in it. I'm sorry to say sweetheart but we've just met, I could be a freak too you know. We all have secrets, its what makes us special. Maybe I wanna walk the tightrope too, be in the circus."
She sighed softly and stood up, giving her a small smile as she adjusted her bag, sliding the strap over her shoulder. "I promise I won't lose it. I'm usually very organized but I'm just not use to waking up and well.. going out places so I was running behind this morning." She glanced down at the paper, making a mental note of what was on it, the classrooms and times. Her memory was almost photographic so it was unlikely she would forget any of it. "My grandparents and mother are trying to get me out of gym..." She mumbled quietly, almost sadly. "I really do want to try it..." She shook her head, apparently her mind wandering to another conversation. "Sorry um and yes I think we do have lunch together and I really am looking forward to it."

Natalie tried to stifle her laughter but really couldn’t. That was probably the oddest name she had ever heard. ”I’m sorry I’m not trying to be mean. at elast no one will ever forget you.” Natalie’s laughter slowly died down. It felt nice to really laugh. Not just something small and often times tense. Maybe she really was making progress in therapy? Or this girl was just that nice? Natalie really wasn’t sure and didn’t have time to sit here and think it over. Perhaps during her free period. She had to switch her schedule around to allow herself a “free period” or study hall so she didn’t get overwhelmed. Usually then Natalie had some time in the main office with her headphones in while she wound down. Lately she didn’t need as long doing that but it was one of the few things that kept her anxiety down besides her pills.
Natalie shrugged. ”Eh it’s a small town. People judge and talk because they have nothing better to do.” She really didn’t care so much and put on a smile to prove so. She process the information that Autumn gave her and shook her head. ”Well Mr. Gavins may just try to get you to just the math team then.” Natalie had nothing against the club just he was determined. Once Natalie did some extracurricular activities but now they consisted of just staying home. She did ease up some with Autumn’s words. ”That’s pretty much how I’ve felt. High school is four years then what? What does popular matter out there?”
When Autumn touched her out of the blue she jerked back and brought both hands up to her face in an attempt to stop a small yelp. Even if she didn’t wince when she accidentally bumped into someone in the halls certain deliberate contact still freaked her out. A few tears slide down her face, hidden behind her hands. ”I’m sorry,” she said against her hands as she sniffled back the rest of her tears. ”I’m safe, I’m safe, I’m safe, I’m safe…”” she repeated several times at barely whisper level. When she felt clam again she slowly breathed in through her mouth and out through her nose. ”I’m sorry it’s not you.” Natalie looked straight ahead and prayed no one else saw that moment. She figured she should explain to Autumn what happened. Plus, if she didn’t it wasn’t like she wouldn’t find out. The students, as well as everyone else in town, did talk.
”I’m not sure wh-when exactly you moved here or who you’ve talked to but-” Natalie cut herself off and paused. She wiped at her cheek to make sure fresh tears weren’t escaping. ”Uh back in September I-I was t-taken. And I was p-put on a boat that was…” deep breath in and out. ”That was set on fire. I-I just don’t like to be touched.” Natalie twisted her bags strap from side to side in an attempt to distract herself. A nervous laugh left her lips. ”You still want to attempt to make friends with this freakshow?” Her cheeks became tinged in pink. She hated to go anymore in depth then that about that day. The two of them getting ready to go inside helped a lot. When her body moved she felt really safe.
The warmth of the school was welcoming. When outside it reminded her of when her body made contact with the chilly waters. She had doubts she would be able to go swimming anytime in the near future. ”Gym’s not that bad. We’re doing indoor volleyball right now. It’s a lot of fun and I hate sports.” As they moved through the crowds she kept herself somewhat alert. If she could avoid bumping into anyone then she made sure she did so. As they got closer to the cafeteria she looked back at Autumn. ”So have you always lived in Hope Harbor? I mean we all still know some of the home school kids because they come here to take the standardized tests.”

Autumn couldn't help but smile as Natalie laughed. She knew she was laughing at her but it was still nice to hear her laugh. "Its all right, I know its a funny name. But its unique and you know, its nice to be different." Her name usually made her stick out like a sore thumb. If that didn't, her hair did or her social awkwardness or even her grandparents and their fortune. Its why she didn't go around giving away a lot of her secrets. They were all quite overwhelming, especially to others.
Autumn giggled softly and shrugged, thinking about after school activities and really wished she could join some but she knew her mom and grandparents would want her home as soon as she could. They were very protective of her, especially since she could get really sick again at any time. "It would be nice to be in a club..." It really would be nice. "Well that's the thing they forget to tell you, there's cliques and popular kids no matter where you go in life. Grown-ups tend to forget that though."
Autumn blinked, watching Natalie's little freak out not really entirely sure what she did to cause it. She waited for her to calm herself down, keeping her hands to herself. She listened quietly, with a heavy heart as Natalie explained her situation. It was terrible, just terrible to hear. This poor girl had gone through so much and was so broken inside because of it. Autumn wanted to hug her, take her away to her palace and hide her there. But knowing how fragile and delicate Natalie was at the moment, Autumn did nothing but listen. "I'm so sorry hun... I wish there was something I could do or say to make it better but I know only time can heal wounds like that..." Maybe some day, when they become good friends, Natalie would let Autumn in and she could begin to help her through it. "Of course I still want to be your friend... something terrible happened to you.. If something like that happened to me I wouldn't be bucket full of sunshine either.. I think you're handling it very well for the small amount of time that's passed since..."
Autumn sighed softly, following her into the building, glad for the warmth, knowing she would probably feel like crap later. It was only fair to share a secret of hers with Natalie. "I haven't lived here very long, I used to live here when I was very young but I moved to Boston right after I started kindergarten. I... have a disease that attacks my immune system and it makes me weak and it attacks without notice at times... so I've lived in a hospital room for most of my life... it wasn't until recently that I convinced my mom to bring me back here. My dad still lives down there. My family has lived here for generations though, my grandfather owns a big fishing company and my mom is his only child. We live with him right now. I'm suppose to take it easy in gym... in fact they didn't want me to take it at all."

”No it’s not really the name that’s funny. Well, the middle name is. I’ve never heard of Wynter being a name. Anyways, it’s just how you said it in general.” Natalie wasn’t really a cruel person. She didn’t make fun of others. Even her boughts of judgment passed quickly and she felt bad for whatever she thought. She knew a lot of the mean kids or bullies-whatever you preferred to call them-didn’t. maybe one day they would. ”Well we have plenty of clubs around here. It’s just finding the right one for you. Most are small so people tend to become close.” Hence why it became so clique and the people with the cruel personalities found each other so well. ”Yeah but most of the people popular now peak now. Then the ones below them rise up. Or so I‘m told.” Natalie giggled very gently. She didn’t have much experience with the real world and her father’s experience with it was different then most people’s. it was a time like this she wished her mother was still alive.
Perhaps if her mother was around it would be easier for her to cope with things. Her father was understanding but the two of them didn’t hug or anything like that often. When she had her breakdowns all her father did was rub her back and pray for her. While it was comforting sometimes she just wanted her father to hug her. That was the only person Natalie trusted to touch her. Natalie let out a nervous chuckle at Autumn’s response. ”It’s fine. I just thought....well it’s a small town and an even smaller school. I’m sure you’ll hear about it.” Natalie looked at her hands before she looked back up at the girl with alabaster skin. ”My first day back I literally ended up on the floor screaming and crying because someone accidentally ran into me. Which is what I’m sure you’ll hear about. The freak who is just a giant cry baby.” No, a “normal” seventeen year old girl wouldn’t do something like that. A normal seventeen year old girl would just move past it. Not Natalie. Natalie would probably never be normal again. Or, at least her version of normal. ”Thank you. I think you’re the first person aside from my therapist to say that. My dad doesn’t even want to talk about it,” she said sadly as her shoulders shrugged.
Slowly her body was coming down from her little freak out. Usually it took longer for it to come down then her mind. Or it seemed that way to her. A hand went up to brush her hair out of her eyes as she listened to Autumn. ”That sounds awful. I’m so sorry. You must have gone stir crazy there.” Natalie couldn’t help but chuckle. ”Well for just meeting we already make a pair or delicate flowers. You physically and me mentally. Maybe it’s a good thing the office suggested I show you around.” When they came around to the cafeteria Natalie let Autumn go first as she gazed around. ”Well I can understand why they don’t want you to. All the germs on the equipment plus all the students whom you’d have to be in close contact with? Hmmm maybe you can do an independent study for gym? I know sometimes they let students do that. Like you find some other physical activity to do. Or semi-independent. Maybe someone could do it with you.”
Natalie looked around and found an empty table. She set her bag on it to more claim it in case they decided to sit down. ”If you have a free period or study hall most kids come here. Or the library but those are pretty much the only places. You can leave the school grounds if you have a car though. They just like knowing the kids are somewhere “containable“ if something were to ever happen.”

Autumn smiled at her as they wandered down the halls of the school. She took in the sights, glancing around at the people and just trying to get used to it. She had never felt so claustrophobic in her life. Living in a hospital room was lonely, yes but it wasn't so busy and noisy, not like this school. She shook her head, trying to ignore the thoughts that were currently bouncing around in her skull. She was NOT missing that hospital bed. She could not go back to living like that, no matter how safe it made her feel.
"I might join the band..." She said softly, knowing she liked music and playing the violin. "But I'm not sure I'm good enough or confident enough to do that.. I do want to try and make the most of my time here though, who knows when I'll have to get dragged back to Boston." It was only a matter of time before she felt sick again.
"Its all right hun, I probably would've freaked out just the same... normal people just have a hard time wrapping their head around things which is why they push you away. People just don't have the brain capacity to understand terrible things... it frightens them and they get stupid." She didn't want Natalie to start hating people in general. People were like sheep... they just followed each other... very few came out as herders or wolves. "If you want to talk about anything I'm here for you."
It was terrible to think that they made a good team simply because they were sick, in body and mind. But perhaps that's why she felt so close to Natalie already. They were both working towards something, trying to overcome the obstacles that were thrown at them. Life sucked sometimes didn't it?
"Well I really want to try gym with everyone else... its just along with my immune system failing I don't have a very good heart. Running around and stuff is hard for me to do... I think my doctor also said I have asthma but I haven't had the pleasure of finding out."
She followed her new friend to the empty table, setting her bag down on a chair, already feeling the warmth seeping back into her body. She smiled softly and pulled off her jacket, draping it over the back of her chair. "Yeah I have a free period. It was the deal I made with my mom for taking gym, so I can relax in case I have a fit. Besides I could probably graduate now if I wanted to... I'm smart and I had nothing to do growing up so I know a lot... But I want to experience public school."

Natalie shifted her back, the books causing her back to be in a bit of pain. ”Do you play any instruments? You could always play for me then I can give you an honest opinion.” It was a small school, not some college team. They didn’t really compete, even in the state competitions. Mainly because it cost a lot of money to send them that far. There were a few years they had been able to but that was because they had raised the money themselves. Maybe this Charity thing the adults were all going to would help out. Apparently someone had come up with the idea of a Charity Ball. Yes, a ball. Like formal gowns, tuxes and dancing. It was like a prom for the grown ups and they were allowed to have alcohol. ”Well if you want to make the most of it then we will find tons of adventures for you to do.”
Maybe adventures would also help Natalie with moving on? She needed something else besides this meager life she had going on. It was bland and she was always afraid of something. Natalie shrugged at her little speech. ”I suppose…” She remembered when this happened she heard about a bunch of students who were at the church where everyone was gathered and was crying. Yes crying for her. Most of those kids were ones she didn’t even talk to! None of it made sense. Some even tried to come visit her in the hospital but she figured out quickly the ones coming were the biggest gossips. They just wanted to have the “inside scoop” on her to relay to everyone else. It was sickening. It’s why she had made a list of who was allowed to visit her. ”Thank you. I know we just met but it’s nice to have someone so understanding.” Part of her wanted to reach out and squeeze Natalie’s hand in thanks but she held back. That’d be too much for her.
Natalie’s hand went up to scratch behind her ear which was a habit of hers when she was thinking deeply about something. ”Hmmm well maybe sit down with the teacher and go over the syllabus? Then you two can decide what things you can do and which ones you can’t.” She may not understand Autumn’s whole condition but if she really wanted to try something she should be allowed to. She was sure the teachers would work with her. They were pretty great like that. Actually, all the teachers were understanding like that to any student. Her body fell into her chair as she reached in her bag for her notebook and a pen. She flipped it to an open page and started to jot down her most recent “freak out” while keeping it out of Autumn’s line of sight. It was something her therapist had her do to help her figure out ways to work through things.
Natalie chuckled as her eyes moved to look upwards but her head remained in the same position. ”Well that’s not being egotistical is it,” she teased gently. Though it wasn’t surprising. When Natalie was in the hospital for a good month all she did was study. She actually got ahead in three of her classes which is why she could get the free period. ”Well if you want to relax the library or your own car is the best bet. It gets crazy in here during free period. One time a teacher walked out and in that time span two kids ended up in a corner ready to rip each other’s clothes off. Some other students were cheering htem on. It was...awkward.”

Autumn smiled softly and giggled, joining her as she sat down in her own chair. "Yeah I'm all right. My family likes to make sure you're well rounded, in the arts and in academics." She sighed softly, almost sadly, thinking of all the things her family expected and didn't expect of her. It made her almost dizzy thinking about it. "I would love to go on adventures with you. We could be like a couple of Nancy Drews." She teased, enjoying the thought of them wandering around solving crimes.
It was indeed nice to have someone she felt so close to already. It was like she had a sister. Being an only child, Autumn had always wondered what it would be like to have a sibling. She imagined it wouldn't be this nice. Most siblings fought and didn't really have a lot in common. She felt connected to this girl. Maybe they were friends in a past life or something.
"Maybe you can come over to my house sometime and spend the night... I mean if you think you're up to it..." She said not directly pointing out her jumpiness. "I'm sure my mom would be ecstatic and my grandparents won't mind." After all there is plenty of room at her home. "I've... never had a sleepover before..." She flushed slightly, embarrassed as she brushed her hair back from her face, tucking a strand behind her ear.
To distract herself she pulled out her syllabus and looked it over. She really wanted to do gym or at least try. She stared at her free period, trying to figure out what to do with it. Maybe she could just use it as a study hall? She did love libraries.
Autumn grinned to herself. She was indeed very smart and she enjoyed every moment of it. It was one of the only things she felt she was good at, learning things. "Yeah I don't try to have an ego..." She wrinkled her nose at the new information, not really sure what to make of it. "Really? They couldn't like... find someplace private? I just cannot figure teenagers out... I want my love life to be special and private and just my own... is that weird of me or something?"

Natalie’s dad was the same way but most of what she knew she had taught herself. The proper lessons she had gotten were given for free and just until she got the hang of it enough to teach herself. She never asked for anything more because she knew her father didn’t have the money for those types of things. Yes, they were comfortable enough but couldn’t buy a whole lot of stuff. Most everything Natalie wore came from WalMart, Old Navy or Goodwill. Or just sales racks in general. And her room was a simple one. She hadn’t bought a new bedding set, aside from replacing her sheets, in years. The furniture was secondhand and only matched because they had refinished it together. Her and her father had that is.
”Well we can see what adventures we can find in this little town. As long as I don’t go swimming for awhile we’re fine.” Her body tensed. She remembered how it felt when the person who had rescued her threw her into the water. Since her hands and legs were still taped together she couldn’t swim on her own. She had to wait until the man came in after her. And she only knew it was a man because of the lack of breasts. The chest was a firm one that was flat. When he had jumped in she was so grateful because he brought her head back above water which allowed her to draw air into her lungs again.
Natalie smiled at the thought of a sleepover. ”That’s ok I’ve never had one either.” Maybe when she was ready she would. Though Autumn was doing amazing to make her feel at ease. She respected Natalie’s boundaries and didn’t press for information. She liked that. Perhaps there was a chance Natalie could finally have a close female friend. ”My mom is dead and even if I had female friends close enough to invite over most are weirded out being around my dad. He’s sort of withdrawn when we’re home.” usually the two spent their nights in the quiet living room. She’d do her homework while he did his studies and prepared his next sermon. Little was said between the two members of the Owens family.
Natalie shrugged about finding a private place. ”I think they were high or something. They were suspended for awhile, I do know that.” That was a hot piece of gossip when it happened. Unfortunately the teacher came back a little too soon as they planned on having longer (semi) alone. Her nose wrinkled up at the thought of a love life in general. ”I really haven’t met anyone here worth getting involved in a love life with. Then again not many people have the same values that I do.” Most teenagers really didn’t care about waiting anymore. She could always change her mind but right now she was very happy being a virgin.
”Do you like being here or do you miss Boston? If you got to see Boston at all.”

Autumn smiled softly and nodded slowly. "I'm fine with that I... never learned how to swim so its not exactly something I'm... er... looking forward to doing just yet. Plus its too cold to go swimming right now... well unless you came over my house but I'm not allowed in that room just yet..." She trailed off, thinking to herself that her family was just a little overprotective of her. Then again she couldn't really blame them for it.
"Well I've never met your father so I have no idea what that's suppose to mean.." She giggled softly and shrugged. "But I'm sure he's fine.. I would love to meet him some day. I like to form my own opinions." It probably would help that people just loved Autumn, she had that kind of personality where she was just easily likable. Especially older people but that was probably due to her being so mature.
Autumn listened to Natalie speak, wondering what her own thoughts were about love and sex. She was smart so she knew she needed to find that person to reproduce. She knew attraction was pheromones. However she was indeed a teenager, no matter how smart and mature she was. She wanted that crazy teenager life, especially when she had missed out on her childhood. "I don't know.. for me I... I know its silly but I want that fairy tale romantic sort of whirlwind. I'm smart enough to know that doesn't happen in real life but its nice to dream. Besides if my grandfather has any say in it he'll pick someone for me..." Not that Natalie probably understood just how rich and old fashioned her family was.
She shrugged and smiled, "I saw Boston from my window.. it looked fun and the lights were pretty at night but you can't really miss anything that you didn't really experience. Boston is just bad memories for me. It was my cage and Maine is where i'm free of it so no... I honestly don't miss it. Nor do I want to see it any time soon. My father still lives there, I told him goodbye and I cried cause I knew it was going to be a long time before we meet again."
