❂ ❂ ❂ ❂ ❂jesse had let her temper get the better of her once again, getting into an argument with landon, and on their first real date, too. he'd taken her home then, not speaking to him the short drive there and then for days after. that was partly because her stubborn side had kicked in, refusing to be the first one to call and make up with the other. instead, she'd gone to work with a will, arriving earlier than anyone else, working till the early morning hours and not even bothering to leave the shop. jesse knew that it probably wasn't safe for her to stay there over night alone, but she didn't care.
after a few days of this, she started getting dizzy spells, sometimes feeling like she was going to pass out. jesse ignored those times as best she could, though, pressing herself to keep going. she was still upset with landon, and it made her even more upset that he hadn't even bothered to call her, yet. it was his fault, after all. in her opinion. landon just couldn't or wouldn't understand where she was coming from, so until he did maybe it was best they didn't talk. jesse didn't know what she wanted right then. part of her wanted him to call her, and part of her didn't want to hear from him. at least not yet.
jesse hadn't even been eating properly, skipping meals all together at times. after about four days of it, she finally passed out. she was at work and had started to feel lightheaded when she just collapsed, scaring the heck out of her employees, especially joe. he tried to wake her up, but found that he couldn't and immediately called an ambulance, then her parents, sister and landon. normally he wouldn't have called her parents, but in this situation he had to. the ambulance soon arrived, and jesse regained some consciousness, though she was still in a fog, her brain unable to make sense of what was going on around her. she drifted in and out as they loaded her onto the ambulance and placed an oxygen mask over her mouth. jesse moaned, reaching up to pull it off, but she was too weak and her arm was placed back down at her side. before she could make any more protests she dozed off again.
the next time she woke up there was a painful pressure in her arm. jesse opened her eyes, squinting against the bright lights as she tried to look around her. she couldn't think clearly still, closing her eyes again as it hurt to think. she knew that she was in a hospital, at least, but how had she got there? another question was why? jesse tried to remember but couldn't. all she could think about was how tired she was, how heavy her eyes felt and how they ached. she had never been this tired in her entire life, she was sure. she heard someone come in, their shoes making small squeaking sounds as they walked across the floor. jesse opened her eyes, seeing a nurse. she tried to say something to her, but her throat was so dry she could barely get any noise out. the nurse patted her arm, telling her to stay quiet and rest. as the woman inject something into the iv in her arm, jesse's eyes closed and she was asleep once more.
her parents had arrived shortly after she'd been placed in a room, but hadn't been allowed to see their daughter yet. by the time they got into her room she was out cold again, so they sat and waited, worrying over her. jesse's sister had known their parents would be there, probably before her, so she'd waited outside till she saw them go inside, not wanting to make a scene. well, she wouldn't, but their parents probably would. so she sat in the waiting room, hoping to see her sister, or at least make sure that she was ok.

I could use somebody, I've been roaming around always looking down at all I see. Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach. You know that I could use somebody. Someone like you, and all you know and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. Landon was in the middle of going through some photos to take to show his birth mother when his phone rang. It was the auto shop which was weird because Jesse hadn’t spoke to him since their fight. And he refused to call because he didn’t see any wrong in what he had done. He thought he was being smart in having different options for places to move. Despite that, he did see her side of things. And he had been wrong bringing up his ex-fiancée. Just it was hard for Landon. Last time he had planned for any type of future he ended up with a broken heart. Landon was just scared that that might happen again. It was really nothing personal to Jesse just he wanted his ass covered.
Still, despite all that, he answered his call. The voice on the other end was unexpected as it was Joe. Apparently Jesse had passed out! Landon freaked out and just went off in talking to Joe. Apparently Jesse hadn’t been doing well at all. She was working late-way later then normal-and then there before any of the mechanics got in. they had been telling her to slow down and take care of herself but it finally went too far. She passed right out in the shop. Of course they also called her parents. That should be loads of fun for him to deal with. After he hung up the phone, he slipped on his winter boots and jacket before he headed out the door. Even if they hadn’t resolved their issues, Landon still cared about Jesse-a lot. He wasn’t going to avoid the hospital. Joe had called him and he knew she was there. He felt like he had to go.
Landon got there in a hurry and it’s a wonder he didn’t get pulled over. When he arrived he asked where he could find Jesse’s room was. The receptionist sent him up to the right floor and he as met by her sister, just as her parents came walking by. They wouldn’t let Landon in to see her! They didn’t think it was a good idea and that he should just go home because there was nothing to do. A comment was made about how this was his fault and Landon got angry. He clenched his fists but turned and walked away. He didn’t leave the hospital though as he went to sit in the downstairs lobby, thinking. While there, Jesse’s sister came to Landon. She had convinced Jesse’s doctor to pull their parents in to talk elsewhere so she and Landon could see Jesse. Apparently this doctor was known for doing such things. Landon took the opportunity and they were upstairs in a flash.
Landon entered the room quietly as Jesse was still passed out. She looked so frail and it broke his heart. He clenched his jaw as he swallowed a lump of emotions. Landon went to one side of her bed and reached for her hand. He clasped both of his around it and brought the grouping to his lips. ”Oh Jesse…” He felt like crying but held it together. He felt like this was his fault. He usually checked on her to make sure she wasn’t pushing herself at work. With their fight he hadn’t been doing that. In fact Landon and Jesse hadn’t even been talking. He should have approached the subject of his uncertainty of where he’d lived in a different, easier manner. Not like he had with just blurting it out. Maybe if he had been gentler about things then they could have avoided the whole, big fight. And then maybe she wouldn’t be lying here right now.

❂ ❂ ❂ ❂ ❂while jesse slept on, the doctor came in, saying he needed to talk to them and said to follow him. her mother asked why they couldn't just talk there, but he said he didn't want her to wake up just yet, and that convinced her. they left the room, glancing back at her once, but jesse was still out cold. she stirred a little as the door closed, but didn't wake up. pure exhaustion mixed with the medication insured that that wouldn't happen for at least a little while longer.
her brows furrowed a little when she heard her name being said. it sounded like landon, but it couldn't be. they weren't even talking right now, so why would he be there? it was definitely a male voice, though. she knew that. and the person sounded worried. her father? joe? no. jesse slowly opened her eyes, squinting a little from the lights, and closed them again as her head ached, mostly from the too loud beeping sound that came from one of the monitors. it probably only sounded too loud because she'd been sleeping, though."landon?" jesse questioned uncertainly. her hand was also being held, she realized, opening her eyes again and attempting to focus them.
she saw landon's face, tears in his eyes as he looked at her with a worried expression. "i'm so sorry, babe," jesse told him, her voice hoarse and her own eyes filling with tears. "i shouldn't have made such a big deal out of it." she had been stubborn about it before, but now all she wanted was for that to be behind them. she had hated the last few days. not seeing or talking to landon. "why am i here?" jesse asked, confusion coloring her tone. she was happy that he'd come, despite the fact they hadn't been speaking to one another.

I could use somebody, I've been roaming around always looking down at all I see. Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach. You know that I could use somebody. Someone like you, and all you know and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. When Jesse finally opened her eyes, Landon let out a sigh of relief. She still looked very weak though. That worried him. He really shouldn’t have stopped checking up on her, no matter if they had fought or not. And to let a fight go unresolved for so long? That was an even worse mistake. That would just cause irreversible rifts and ill feelings. Landon didn’t want that in their relationship. He wanted it to be able to grow. If he or they did things to stop that then all they would remain is stuck in the mud. This relationship would fail and he really didn’t want that. Not like this-not without trying and fighting for it.
Landon couldn’t help but chuckle lightly as he pressed another entle kiss to her fingers. ”Really? That’s what you’re thinking about right now? I think you hit your head harder then the said.” The amused expression faltered as he sighed. ”You have no reason to be sorry-I do. You had a right to make a big deal out of it. I went about the topic in an entirely awful way. And I had no right bringing up my ex. I regret that entirely. For now I wouldn’t think about moving anywhere until right before graduation. And if I bring it up you can hit me with a wrench.” Landon did see her side of things but he also hoped she understood why he was thinking so far ahead. If he were to move anywhere besides his parents or staying in Hope Harbor, he’d have to find a way to save money. He didn’t have a successful business like her as he was only a bartender at the hotel.
Landon sighed as he looked to Jesse’s sister as she went to sit on Jesse’s bed beside her sister and pull her close. Landon remained in his chair and released one hand so Jesse could hold her sister’s hand as well. ”You collapsed at work and hit your head. The guys couldn’t wake you so they called an ambulance.” Landon paused as he looked over her face. She looked much paler then the last time he had seen her as well as last a couple pounds. Or that’s form what he could tell but he was just a guy after all. It was dangerous for men to guess a woman’s size in general. ”Baby, Joe told me you’ve been pulling long hours and skipping your lunch break. I know it’s busy there but I told you, you need to take care of yourself.” Landon stood to press a tender kiss to her forehead. When he pulled back, he looked down at her hand while he rubbed his thumb along the back of it. She was so pale he could make out the veins. Broke his heart.
”I’m sorry I stopped checking in on you. From now on I am bringing you all three meals and your to eat them with me. And when I go to New York I will recruit your sister to take my place. No arguments or else you don’t get your Christmas gift.”

❂ ❂ ❂ ❂ ❂a small smile touched her lips when he chuckled a little, just happy he wasn't upset with her anymore. "yes, because i was just being selfish. and the last few days.." jesse trailed off, her mouth so dry it almost hurt to talk. and then landon was saying how she didn't have a reason to be sorry. she shook her head, careful not to do so too hard, and licked her lips, trying to moisten them so she could talk. she ended up laughing some when he told her she could hit him with a wrench, and wiped at the corner of her eye with the back of her hand. "i'll remember that." not that jesse would ever actually do something like that, unless she was extremely mad at him, but she hoped that wouldn't happen again anytime soon. "can i have some water?"
she hadn't noticed her sister until she came to sit by her. jesse was happy to see her, though, and took one of her hands, holding it tightly. "oh.." she said, when landon told her what had happened. she didn't remember passing out, just how she'd felt lightheaded and a little weak all morning. aside from that, there was nothing. "when can i go home?" jesse didn't care to be in the hospital any longer than was necessary, and she knew she'd get more rest at home in her own bed. other than feeling weak and dehydrated, she didn't think her condition was all that bad, so she really hoped she could go home that day.
jesse looked down when landon mentioned the long hours she'd been pulling, refusing to make eye contact with him. of course she knew that she shouldn't have, but that had been her way of dealing with their relationship issues. tears sprung to her eyes again and she sniffed a little. "i know," was all jesse said, not wanting to admit why she'd been doing it, since it seemed so silly and immature at this point. especially since it'd landed her in the hospital. she looked up when landon stood to lean in and give her forehead a kiss. she gave him a smile as he rubbed the back of her hand, and gave his a gentle squeeze. jesse knew she didn't deserve a great guy like him.
she laughed at his little speech, shaking her head and glancing at her sister. "i guess i'll have to do what i'm told, then," jesse said with a joking sigh. she was feeling a bit better already, probably from having landon and her sister with her. "where are mom and dad?" it wasn't that she particularly wanted to see them, but it was weird for them to be absent when she was in the hospital. unless no one had called them, which she didn't think likely. she wanted landon and her sister to stay, though, and she knew that if her parents came in they probably wouldn't be able to stick around without issues.

I could use somebody, I've been roaming around always looking down at all I see. Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach. You know that I could use somebody. Someone like you, and all you know and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. It pained Landon to see Jesse like this. The girl worked entirely too hard and it upset him that she thought she had to do this. She had plenty of capable employees and he wished she could spread the responsibilities around more. He let out an agitated sigh. Not upset at her but the whole situation in general. ”We both made mistakes. How about we just lay this to rest, baby?” Landon just didn’t want to fight anymore he’d rather move past it and go back to how they were before. Such as her asking for water and him going to grab it. He made sure to put only enough ice in the cup to cool the liquid off but not have it take up most of the cup. Jesse needed water, not ice. When he came back around, he sat on the edge of her bed and brought the cup with the straw to her lips so she could sip at it without lifting it herself.
Landon’s face got a bit tense as he glanced at Jesse’s sister. With a sigh, her sister answered. ”Probably tomorrow. Mom and dad want you to go home with them…” Landon tensed up. Everyone knew that Jesse loved her parents but the Cura family didn’t all have the same views. The eldest daughter didn’t talk to her parents and Jesse tried to keep the peace because she loved all three people. Landon also knew if she went to her parent’s he may not get to see her often. For some reason Jesse’s parents didn’t seem to approve of him despite hardly speaking to them. They had interacted a couple times and not for long at that. And if someone told them that he and Jesse had been fighting in the days before this all happened they may dislike him even more.
Landon brought the cup of water back up to Jesse’s lips, urging her to drink some more. He had stopped taking care of her once and he wasn’t going to do that again. Even if her parents threw him out of the hospital room he’d find a way to come back around to help her. Bring Jesse her favorite food or a movie to take her mind off things. Jesse an adult and so was Landon. An adult dating their daughter. They couldn’t dictate everything.
Her laughter, even if a bit weak, was encouraging to Landon. Hopefully she continued to get stronger overnight. ”Yes you will or else you won’t get your Christmas gift when I pick it up.” Landon already knew she would love her gift. He took a lot of time to find the perfect gift for their first Christmas together. Landon tapped Jesse on her shoulders and helped her move onto her side. He began to gently rub at her back after he took care to make sure her hospital gown and blanket covered the lower half of her body. ”Mom and dad are talking to the doctor thanks to me. They…” Jesse’s sister paused and looked at Landon. With Jesse’s back to him he looked at the eldest Cura sister and smiled a little before he glanced downwards at Jesse. ”They didn’t want you to see us. Your sister had to convince Doctor Matthews to talk to them about something so that we could come see you.” He continued to run his fingertips along her back in a soothing manner. ”But I think it’s because they didn’t want to stress you out anymore then you were.” Or so he hoped though they all knew that probably wasn’t the case. Still, Landon wouldn’t rush to bad mouth them at a time like this. Jesse needed to see at least someone was putting forth an effort to get along with the other and Landon was or would. Hopefully her parents saw that.

❂ ❂ ❂ ❂ ❂jesse knew she must look horrible. partly because of the fact she felt like crap, and partly because how landon kept looking at her. she could tell it upset him to see her this way, especially since he usually kept such good tabs on her. it wasn't hit fault, of course. jesse had been the stupid one who wouldn't stop working. no matter how things were between them, she should never have done that and she knew it. she nodded a little at landon's words, though she figured her mistakes were bigger than his. "ok," she answered with a small, tired smile. when he brought over the requested water, jesse tried to sit up a little, but he'd already thought ahead, so she didn't need to. after a few sips, she relaxed back on the bed, but kept her eyes on landon. there was something else she really wanted, something he'd failed to do since she'd woken up. "i think you forgot something," jesse told him, her voice still a bit hoarse. she was referencing the fact that he hadn't kissed her once yet, and that was something she didn't like going without when they were in each others company. it didn't bother her that her sister was there as well. she was her sister, after all.
when jesse heard that her parents wanted her to come with them, she shook her head immediately and started sitting up. "what? no!" she looked to landon, an upset expression on her face. it was clear that he didn't like the idea any better than her, judging from how tense he was. she loved her parents, of course, but the idea of staying with them until she was recovered enough to go home was.. well, ridiculous. jesse had no doubt that they would at least try and keep landon away, and she didn't want them to succeed in that. she grabbed hold of his hand, maybe tighter than was necessary. "i'm not going home with them," she insisted, feeling herself getting more and more upset at that moment. jesse felt like she was going to burst into tears any second and she hated that. it was just because she was still so exhausted, of course, but that didn't make her feel any better about it.
she sat back in the bed once more, trying to get control of herself. jesse had closed her eyes, feeling another headache coming on, when she felt the straw at her lips once more. she obediently drank a little more, touched by the fact that landon had already switched to the caretaker mode. how had she landed this guy? and how on earth had he got stuck with her?
jesse smiled when he mentioned her christmas present again. "alright, alright. i'll behave," she assured him, but her curiosity had been peaked. "can i have a hint?" some of her playfulness was returning already, a sure sign that she was on the mend. jesse had already figured out landon's gift, too, and hoped he'd like it. she knew him well enough by this point, however, to be sure and give him something he'd love. she couldn't even guess at what he was getting her, though. especially right then, when she still felt a little foggy headed. jesse let landon help her move to lie on her side, closing her eyes as he gently rubbed her back for her. it was so relaxing, she felt as though she was going to fall asleep. when sandra started speaking however, she opened them again. she wondered why she'd paused and looked at landon, then turned back towards him a little, so she could see his face. when jesse heard what had happened, she felt herself getting angry right away. she laid back down, sighing and covering her face with one hand. she was trying not to lose it, unsure of how bad she would freak out if she let herself get too upset. she tried to concentrate on landon's soothing fingertips on her back as she took deep breaths. jesse moved her hand away from her face, both hands resting on the pillow, but balled into fists. "damn it, landon. we all know why." a hand had moved back to her head and she closed her eyes once again. jesse was in a pretty bad mood now, thanks once again to her parents. part of her hoped they'd come back soon so she could give them a piece of her mind, hating how much they interfered in her life.
