history
To know Nicole Cook, you have to first know who she was growing up. She came from a good home. She’s an only child as her mother nearly bled out giving birth. To her parents, Nicole was a blessing. The spoiled the little girl to the best of their abilities. They were “working class” so it’s not like they had heaps of cash. One parent always tried to be home for dinner and to spend time with Nicole. They taught her values such as being a good person and to be honest. They went to church on Sunday’s and Nicole went to Sunday school. One would think she’d be pretty close to perfect then.
When in middle school, Nicole began to break out of her shell. She joined the winter guard and did basketball. She made friends easily as she generally had a good heart. She was sweet to people and always there for them. Sometimes it go overwhelming when some of her friends seemed to have tons of issues but she ignored her own ill feelings. She waned to be a teacher one day and teachers had to be there for their students no matter what. So, Nicole pushed it aside when she got too stressed or overwhelmed. Plus, her schoolwork helped keep her mind off things. Besides, some of her friends had real problems. Like Dominic but he’s a whole other story.
When Nicole entered high school she was finally allowed to date. Which pleased her friend, Dominic. They had been friends in middle school and crushed on each other but her parents didn’t approve of her dating yet. When she got to high school with him, he was already dating someone so she began to date as well. There were some “serious” relationships that lasted a few months but nothing past that. Dominic was her first real relationship. They were high school sweethearts. Their relationship didn’t end there, though. While Dominic worked as a fisherman Nicole went to college in Hope Harbor to become a teacher. Her mother was French Canadian so she wanted to teach French to high school students. Nearing the end of her undergraduate years, Dominic asked Nicole to marry him and she happily agreed.
They got pregnant not long after so Nicole decided to do her bachelor’s degree online. It was during this time Nicole began to change but only slightly. She started to have some off moods where she got really down. She wouldn’t cry or curl up somewhere but she felt a little numb. She brushed it off as the sleep deprivation from the pregnancy and the stress of schooling. But the feeling got worse after she gave birth to their daughter, Everleigh. Still, Nicole wrote it off as sleep deprivation and stress. She was able to paste on a pretty smile and hide it from people but that feeling began to grow bigger and bigger within her. Then, one day, Nicole woke up and felt nothing. She felt absolutely numb. Sure, seeing her daughter learn something new or smile her way made her happy but the rest of the time she felt nothing.
Nicole went out with her friends one night as her first Everleigh free night. There she met a guy-Rick. He was a skydiving instructor and chatted the girls up. Nicole felt the need to do this. She felt like she needed a rush. So, she went skydiving with Rick. Then cliff diving and bungee jumping. She would take any big risk to feel something. Including cheating on her husband. The first few times she felt awful but then the feeling passed(as terrible as that is to say). With her mood change, her relationship with Dominic had become stagnant. He was working all the time, she had her college courses and then taking care of Everleigh just took a toll on them. With Rick, Nicole felt something. So, she decided to leave Dominic for Rick. She could tell Dominic was upset-how could she not?-but she felt so numb she just didn’t care. They worked out a custody agreement of alternating two weeks on and off and neither pays child support.
Nicole is now working as a high school French teacher. This is her first year on her own. She has three tattoos(which she swore she’d never get) and is always looking for that rush of emotions during the two weeks her exhusband has Everleigh. Eventually Rick asked her to marry him and she agreed but...she didn’t feel that happy feeling deep down like when she had said yes to Dominic. Yes, she was glad he asked but three years later she can’t shake what she’s feeling. Her parents want her to get help but she sees no reason to. She thinks she’s fine but they know she isn’t. especially since now she is at the point that if Rick is working and she doesn’t have anything to do, all she wants to do is lay in bed. Sometimes she’ll sleep four thirteen hours just so she doesn’t have to interact with people and make them think she’s fine when really, she is not.
