personality : dean has always had a taste for leadership, though he wasn't always a good one. often getting himself and everyone else into trouble for doing various mischievous things in school. but once he joined the army, things had changed. he'd matured and become a great leader, excelling in his chosen profession. with age, he also became more of a patient person, definitely needing that trait after his wife lost their son. he's also a loving husband, willing to do what it takes for his wife, not matter what's happening in their lives. dean is a very capable person and a fast learner, so anything he really wants to do, he usually does well.
alexandria is one of his biggest weaknesses. he often can't tell her no when she wants something. he wouldn't have it any other way, though. he's a jealous person, though. if he thinks someone is checking his wife out you can be sure he'll be glaring hate on them. if looks could kill. dean was always reckless, and has still kept some of that with age. he enjoys the thrill of mountain climbing or skydiving. the nightmares are terrible for him. sometimes he doesn't even bother trying to sleep because he knows what he'll see when he closes his eyes. dean has had them since he joined the army, but they've only got worse since returning home.

history : dean blackwell was born on the nineteenth of march in hope harbor, maine. the family moved to los angeles when he was two, his younger brother coming along a couple years later. he had never really cared for him, being four years older, and just finding him a distraction for his parents. now they had to divide their attention between the two, and he didn't like that at all. before the boys got too much older, however, they moved back to maine, just in time for dean to start middle school. he loved it, enjoying his popularity and always showing off. he was often getting detention for various reasons, mostly goofing off or doing stupid things that were likely to get him hurt. other than a few scrapes and bruises, though, he was always fine.
once jayce reached middle school, dean felt that he needed to keep the attention on himself even more. he succeeded in that, especially when it came to sports. always trying to show his younger brother. then high school hit, for dean, anyway. by this time he wasn't just in to sports. mountain climbing, backpacking, hunting, camping and sailing were just a few. anything that pertained to the outdoors, and risky, was right down his alley. sailing was his favorite, however. he got more reckless and a bit out of control, as he got older. dean was the kid who always did something crazy and stupid, but he loved it.
he met alexandra cross for the first time when he was fourteen. dean had been on a walk when he saw her, taken by her from that point on. he pushed her to new limits, finding that she'd lived a pretty isolated life, and was way too 'proper' for his liking. he aimed to change all that, slowly but surely changing for what he thought was the better. a year after that first time, they officially started dating. they were the talk of the whole school, and dean got the feeling his brother was jealous of the two, even though he had no idea he'd been planning on asking her out himself. eventually, their feelings changed from a strong liking, to love. dean could safely say this was his first time falling for someone, and it felt so different from a crush or mere physical attraction. alexandria was beautiful, of course, but it was her personality that attracted him the most. it didn't matter that he was the crazy, adventurous type and she was a nerdy bookworm. opposites attract, right?
when they were seventeen, they finally did 'it'. dean was no virgin, but alex had been, and it made it special for both of them, though it would have been more so had he waited as well. it even made him wish that he had. he knew from that point on that he wanted to marry her, and despite their age, didn't want to wait long. and alexandria felt the same. so, he surprised her, proposing in front of the whole class on graduation day, and she of course said yes. they got married that autumn, when lexi came home on spring break. dean had chosen to skip college, instead joining the military. he left for boot camp shortly after the wedding, and on returning was stationed in los angeles, california. they made the move, getting a place near the base, and began the adjustment of their new lives. along with college, alexandra was also working as a nurse. dean was proud of his wife and they had a good relationship. still very much in love, hardly ever fighting. right before the news of his deployment, they found out she was pregnant. she was thrilled, and dean was more than excited. he couldn't wait to be a dad. once finding out it was a boy, they quickly picked name, and the real planning started. then came the news of his deployment, disappointing dean because he knew he'd miss a lot because of it. he was almost regretting his decision at this point, but there wasn't much he could do about it now.
the worst day of his life was finding out about the death of their little baby boy. he requested a twenty-four hour pass, explaining the situation, and got it. dean was able to get back in time to be there for his wife. dean knelt by her side, holding her hand in the hospital as she gave birth to their stillborn child. he did as much as he could for her in the short time he was able to be there. upon getting back, he immediately requested an early leave, finding out a week later that it was granted to him. dean left at the earliest possible time, relieved to be back home with his wife. he had two weeks with her, and during that time he was patient and understanding, comforting her whenever she needed it. dean was able to be there for mother's day, having a special ring made and engraved, in memory of their late son. it seemed to help her, and would also being a comfort for when he couldn't be there.
dean spent four years in the army before being injured in a raid. he'd been shot five times, once in the arm, three in the back and one in the leg. fortunately, nothing vital had been hit, and because of where the bullets had hit in his leg and arm, he didn't lose any limbs. that was the end of his military career, however. he returned to los angeles, spent some time healing, before becoming a nature guide. the outdoors was where he wanted to be, most of the time, like it always had been. dean had brought up the prospect of them trying for another child a couple years prior, but lexi hadn't been open to the idea. she was still healing. he knew that it could be hard for her, but it was time to move on from that and get over the depression. he didn't know what to do when she began crying, however, so he dropped it. it hadn't got out of hand at all and he'd told her he loved her, hoping that she'd eventually want to try again. the next morning he took his boat out, needing time to think for a while.
dean ended up wrecking his boat, distracted by his own thoughts and not paying close enough attention to what he was doing. he'd gone way too far out, and a big storm was coming up. it was on him before he knew it and his small boat was soon demolished. he was a good, strong swimmer and was able to make it to an island before collapsing out of exhaustion. the remnants of his boat were carried pretty far away, making it impossible for the search team to be in the right place. dean was a good outdoors man, so survive on an island alone wasn't a problem for him. he missed his wife terribly, though, and knew that if he wasn't found within the next few months everyone would think him dead.
but it was three years before it happened. dean was picked up by a cruise liner that happened to come close enough to the island to see the fire that he'd started in order to attract attention. he got back to california, expecting to find his wife there, but she'd moved away. dean asked his parents repeatedly about her, but they wouldn't talk about her. they got him to come home with them, but on a day they were both out, he booked a flight to hope harbor, with the help of a relative who liked her. dean is just happy to be back and can't wait to see his wife after three years.
