Brenden often walked in the park on nice days. He even sometimes went out when it was raining; though if there was a thunderstorm about he kept himself in his room. He was startled easily, and so each time the thunder boomed or lightning struck he hid under his blankets with his stuffed animal, John. Hope Harbor was thankfully a pretty quiet town; he could wander around without being scared by a car racing by or people shouting at each other.
He usually walked slowly so that he can take in the sights of the trees and water; he disliked rushing through the details, though he understood that sometimes he had to be hurried in order to get somewhere on time (i.e. his classes). This particular day was especially nice; there was a calm breeze about and the sky was devoid of clouds. Brenden smiled to himself as he saw others enjoying the day by being out and about also. They chose a good day.
Brenden looked at his stuffed animal, John, which was tucked gently in his arms. "It is a good thing that we decided to take a little break from the grading, John. Would be a shame to spoil this beautiful day by being cooped up in the house." He often spoke to the stuffed animal in public, but at this point he was used to the stares he sometimes got. He understood it was weird, and, yes, it did hurt a little to have people possibly judge him based off of that, but at the same time he was trying his best not to be bothered by it. He enjoyed John's company; he was like family to Brenden, especially since his own family was back in England. He sometimes got homesick, and talking to John eased this pain.
He wandered around a little more before sitting down on a bench and looking out at the park. He placed the stuffed animal on his lap, and Brenden commented, "Soon all the flowers will be blooming and we can walk amongst them if you so choose." He felt John would enjoy that sort of activity despite being a stuffed animal. Brenden liked to pretend, at least for a little while, that John was real and he would respond to his words with his own witty remarks. It helped him cope with being on his own.
