A working lunch.
Jude despised those but it got him out of the stuffy office. In all fairness, he was only working at the café because they were changing out the heating and cooling systems in the office. Which were very much needed. The place was just insane when even one person adjusted the heat. So many people were left grumpy and arguing. This would fix a lot of it. Some recent wins helped out a lot because it gave them the funds they needed to pay for these upgrades. But it would take all day and into the night as it also effected the running water. Perhaps if the water worked better as well, whenever Jude crashed working late he wouldn’t have as many issues when the next morning came.
Jude had set himself up in a corner table and just kept the coffee coming. He had already had some desserts and had just ordered a lunch item. Jude wasn’t going to just set up camp here and not be a paying customer. He could have gone to the apartment to work but he hated bringing papers there. They had a tendency of getting lost there. At least here he would remember to grab them because he had no choice. He’d be in serious trouble if they got left behind. His vest was slipped off and draped half in his bag, half out. Jude’s sleeves were sloppily rolled up as he frantically typed on his laptop. His iPhone was beside him so he could occasionally glance to make sure no texts were coming in. today Jude wasn’t taking in any calls or seeing clients, just emailing and catching up on paperwork along with research.
With a move of his body, Jude shifted his weight so he could lean his elbow on the table with his fist against his forehead. This next case was nothing but a giant pain for him as he tried to research some old laws and agreements. It’s like one couldn’t catch a break in his field of work. Especially with the other large issue he dealt with. Not that he could talk about it ever. Which is why he often drank and spent time with random women. Well, semi random women. Jude had plenty of special friends who he had frequent romps with if they weren’t attached to someone else. It was just a matter of keeping track of who was attached and who wasn’t.

Though, the girl really could take a personal day - or a sick day.. She had four personal days and eight sick days that she was able to use. However, she saved up her sick days and personal days for a reason - so she could have a longer vacation. She waited until the time she started feeling burnt out - and that’s when she took her vacation. A weekend away and a paid holiday here and there from work just weren’t enough for her. Between writing proposals, writing and accepting grants, and all of her other work she had to do - she got exhausted easy. Not counting the present day, she only had one more day before the weekend. One more day before her two days of freedom.
After she gathered her things in the office, she walked out of the tall building and got into her car. She only took her lunch at a certain place - Madelyn’s café. She and Madelyn had gotten semi close since Madelyn had come back to town - and Sydni LOVED her child to death. Sydni was a single twenty-seven year old unmarried woman. Single. Of course, there had been a few close calls - on the marriage front - but they all turned out to be assholes who broke her heart one way or another. All of them. Sydni was starting to get her motherly instincts in - but being single was a bit of a damper in the pregnancy front. She thought about adoption - god knows she had the money for it - and then there was artificial insemination. Her parents bugged her every day of her life “When are you going to get married and give us grandchildren?” they’d always ask. It irritated Sydni that right now, that was something she couldn’t give to her parents - unless she took the adoption route or the artificial insemination route.
She hadn’t been on birth control for over two years - as it had been two years since she had gotten any. Two years seemed like a very long time - but she’d rather wait it out than hop into bed with some stranger. That was something Sydni was NOT willing to do.
Walking into the café, at the usual time of day, she winked at Madelyn as Madelyn told her to go ahead and go to her usual spot. Her table in the corner. To her surprise though, her corner table by the window - that she sat in every day was taken - by the hottest lawyer in town no less. Sydni had two options here - either be a bitch and demand he move.. Or, take the higher road and offer to share her space for the day - key word being for the day. It seemed as if he was busy working, so Sydni doubted he’d be a talker. That was quite fine with Sydni, who often enjoyed her lunches alone unless Madelyn sat with her. So, she decided she’d offer to share her space with him..
”Excuse me, you’re kinda in my seat.” She smiled kindly.

Jude was a bit frustrated with everything. He could not wait until the office was fixed. Since he felt a bit stiff, Jude set everything aside and stretched outwards. His limbs went towards the other side of the booth and his arms went straight upwards. He was careful not to go backwards in case anyone was behind him. A glance look showed him there wasn’t which he was glad. When his hands came back down he scratch at the back of his head. At least he was nearly through the biggest part of what he had to get done. Jude pulled out a notepad and scrawled some notes of what he was reading. Once done he chomped down on the middle of the pen. As he read and thought of things, he twirled the pen between his teeth. It was a terrible habit he had picked up but it was better then grinding his teeth like he used to. At least the pen was smooth and he could easily glide it along instead of what he used to do.
At the sound of a somewhat familiar female voice, Jude looked up. He grabbed the pen out of his mouth and chuckled. He knew Sydni a bit from different town fiascos. Mainly one involving a tourist and the county hospital. Jude’s father’s law firm took care of that and there were some press conferences. Sydni took care of all of that. He sat back and clicked the bottom of the pen as he nodded with an amused look on her face. ”Really? Where’s your name carved into the wood. There’s a lovely seat over there unless you have another solution.” Jude was too stressed out to really care about doing much else.
Jude moved to rest both his hands behind his head and look up at Sydni while she decided. It was no secret that when he wanted to be, he could be a giant flirt. He didn’t pull out the charm often on women anymore. At least in all seriousness. When he wanted a quickie then it worked perfect. That little trick of his also works great in the court room. Most people thought just memorizing the law was what made a great lawyer. No, what made a great lawyer was that, charisma and being quick on your feet. Jude was all of those things no matter how much he drank the night before. Of course he never drank before a trial so he was always on top of his game and no one knew of his little forget-me-everything potion. ”So what’s your decision Miss Sydni?”

Where’s your name carved into the wood. There’s a lovely seat over there unless you have another solution.” He really didn't know, did he? She moved her body over to him, and she was standing right beside him, looking down at him with the smirk on her face. She bent over, never taking her eyes off of him, and with her manicured nails, she tapped underneath the table on the side he was sitting at.
"I believe, if you look there, you will find my name and writing that says 'Sydni Mclaughlin's space from now to the end of her days.' " She straightened her body back up, looking at him. She pursed her lips together, smiling, a playful look in her eyes, and she walked over to the seat across from him. She moved the chair out, set her bags down, and then took her seat.
"I think, I can share my spot with you - this one time, Mister Winslet." She smirked even more, as she twisted the diamond ring - that was on her right ring finger - around her finger. The diamond belonged to her great-great grandmother - Sydni inherited it when she died. Of course, she had inherited money along with it.. but the ring had more memories and more meaning to it than the money. On her left wring finger, she wore a ring given to her by her mother - it read exactly "Not all who wander are lost." It was a daily reminder to her.
She began to tap her fingers on the table, as she kept eye contact with Jude. Then, she was brought by a waitress her usual lunchtime meal - a Cesar salad and a rockstar energy drink.
"Can you deal with sharing a table for one day?"

Jude was actually intrigued about this writing. He couldn’t help but move his seat back and peek under the table. ”Well I’ll be damned,” he uttered before he chuckled. He scooted back in as he nodded, a smile tugging on his lips. ”Fair enough but if others here knew that, why didn’t they tell me?” That was a fair enough point. Obviously if she got away with carving into the table they actually liked her here. He himself rarely came here. He’d get some coffee and breakfast from here but hardly ever came in to actually eat. He just never had the time. Ok, he could come in here but it was hard. When he saw the faces of people who had lived here for years upon years, he wondered who was a part of everything that had happened. It disgusted Jude. If it weren’t for the fact he was being forced to keep silent, he’d be writing the wrongs of what had happened.
Jude moved to clear space. Most of that papers could be put away, he had just been lazy before. After everything had been put away in his expandafile, it was slipped into his bag. Jude hated briefcases but instead liked larger bags, ones that were a bit more stylish. They carried more and he could still hide certain things from view. Perhaps it was the younger part of him peeking through in that way. As he organized things, he’d peek p at Sydni. It really had been awhile since they were around one another. A brow arched in curiosity for her staring. A wide grin broke out as he leaned in, crossing his arms before he set them on the table. ”I suppose I could. In fact, the company would be refreshing. Plus if my father came in he might leave me be hoping you’ll be my date for Christmas if he lets us talk.” OK that was a giant move, probably really bold but it was fun. Sydni had always been playful even if they hadn’t really had much time to talk outside of working before. There had been friendly banter but not much before. Just knew her type-relationship type-and he had never been one for it before. He wasn’t opposed to it but when he first found out everything, all he wanted to do was get drunk and screw around. Part of him felt like stopping but that meant actually letting someone into his world. A world filled with darkness and drinking. There was nothing that made him want to stop drinking. Though he loved his parents, they weren’t really great to be around. And he had no one special in his life worth stopping for. So Jude kept drinking every night and probably wouldn’t stop until he found someone worth stopping for.
Jude tapped the edge of his laptop with his pen as he looked over at her. Finally, he decided a break was needed. The palm of his hand close the lid before setting it aside and he grabbed his drink. After a few sips, he pulled his chair in more the lean forward. ”So what have you been up to over at Town Hall? Getting ready for Founder’s Fair I presume?”
