I could use somebody, I've been roaming around always looking down at all I see. Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach. You know that I could use somebody. Someone like you, and all you know and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. Landon whistled as he drove along to the auto shop. Jesse seemed to be too busy for lunch so he decided to bring lunch to her. Nothing really fancy, just some subs from the café along with some drinks, chips and cookies. It may only be September but he had one of his thicker jackets on as he slid into his car, setting the food on the seat next to him. He didn’t need to turn the heat on since the jacket was enough. Being from the Carolina’s, he was used to much warmer weather even this time of the year. He was getting used to Maine weather but it could be hard at times. His first winter here was brutal. When driving he must have spun out three times. Now he was better but that didn’t mean Landon liked it anymore.
It was still undecided if he would stay or not once done school. There were some great architectural firms here in Maine but there were also many in New York, California, Florida, Alabama...When he graduated in a year he could decide what he wanted to do. Some of his professors were telling the students to get serious now about finding a place to design. He knew he should but right now he just wanted to enjoy school and time with his friends. Next summer he’d start looking around. Not that Landon wasn’t currently serious. He had started his resume and was building up a portfolio but he didn’t feel like he had to send it out yet. Sure, a firm could promise they’d hire you but over two years many things could change. He was debating on taking a couple more years, actually, to get his business degree as well. Then after he worked for a firm for a couple years then he could start his own firm. That was his eventual dream.
Landon finally pulled up to the auto shop and put his car into park. His body leaned back some to zip his dark tan jacket up. Underneath he wore a graphic tee. Despite not liking the chill, he hated to wear sweaters. With running around with classes, he sometimes overheated easily and hated trying to slip a sweater off. It was much easier to just unzip your jacket and toss it over the back of the chair. After he was bundled up to brace himself against the wind, he got out of his car. Quickly he slipped his keys into his pocket before he walked to the passenger side to get the food out. He didn’t care if left his doors unlocked. Jesse was one of his closest friends-one of the first he made when he came here. He often came here and there were times she came to his place. He disliked having many guests though because it was fairly sparse. The furniture he did have was mismatched. There were some photos on the walls but they were all in different frames of on a bulletin board. No special art or posters were on them. He knew his parents would help if he asked so he didn’t say anything. Landon liked trying to do things on his own. They already helped with his college expenses since his scholarships didn’t cover everything.
Landon walked through the front door and greeted the guy at the front counter. After he was sure Jesse was alone in her office, he knocked with his elbow then pushed it open. "Well, since you will not return my calls or texts I brought food to you. So shut off that phone, give me a hug and enjoy the food I brought.” Landon put the food on her desk before he placed his hands on his hips, a smile tugging on his lips while he tried to be serious. That was failing fairly easily.

some days the shop was very stressful. like today. first thing that morning there had been an accident and the car had been brought to them. there were four cars already there from the previews day that still needed fixing. plus another four had come in before noon with various issues. jesse was swamped, especially since she was short a mechanic. she'd had to fire one last week because they just weren't getting along. well, he hadn't been getting along with any of the other employees, either, so they were all happy to see him go.
it was a good thing her parents never came by the shop. jesse didn't spare her clothes or herself when there. her hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail, grease and various other fluids spotted her clothes and arms up to her elbows. and then there was her face. probably the cleanest out of everything, but there were dark finger prints and grease smeared on her forehead and cheeks. jesse didn't really care, however. she never cared how she looked at work. when her parents were around, however, she made sure that there were no grease spots and that her hair didn't look ratty. they liked their daughters looking respectable and business like. not tomboyish. not that they were even talking to her older sister right now, but that was besides the point.
jesse had been working on the car that had been hit for most of the morning. she left the other vehicles that had far fewer problems to her employees. she was the most experienced mechanic out of the bunch, though the ones she currently employed had plenty under their belts as well, aside from the newbie. but he was catching on nicely, she had to admit. she slid out from under the car, scratching at an itch on her nose, and sat up, stretching. "hey, give me a hand up?" she asked joe as he walked by. he reached down and grabbed her hand, pulling her to her feet, a little too hard, however, as she nearly lost her balance. joe always did that, partly because he sometimes forgot how light she was compared to the rest of them. she punched at him playfully, then headed for her office as she heard the phone ringing.
she picked it up, answering with the same greeting she always did. jesse grabbed her water bottle as she talked with the person, managing a sip in between talking. she'd been so busy lately at the shop she hadn't had time to be social at all. jesse had even forgot to charge her cell phone, which she now noticed sitting on the desk, dead. she was just finishing up when she heard a knock at the door. before she could say a word landon walked through the door, food in hand. jesse shushed him as he began talking, covering the speaker on the phone, but he finished anyway. she finished up with them quickly and hung it up. "hey you!" jesse exclaimed happily as she got to her feet and gave him a big hug. it was only after she had wrapped her arms around him that she realized she was covered in grease. "oops! sorry.." she said, stepping back. it was only after seeing the food, and smelling it, that she realized she was starving. "and i'm sorry about not getting back to you. it's been so busy here. i haven't had a social life in over a week." she laughed a little, then turned her attention to the food. "landon, you're a life savor. i'm starved!" jesse moved the two chairs across from each other so they could chat while eating. it was nice to spend sometime with a friend. not that her employees weren't, but it was different.

I could use somebody, I've been roaming around always looking down at all I see. Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach. You know that I could use somebody. Someone like you, and all you know and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. Landon was never one to really listen when Jesse gave him an order. She may act all big and tough but he knew her. She was a sweet girl. Ok, she was probably very sweet to a lot of people but he liked watching her try to be bossy. Most of these guys here were two or three times bigger then her. He had seen her lay down the law to them before and she could be intimidating. Most of the time he just laughed but made sure not to do it around her employees. Usually when alone they would do that. Sometimes she hated him for that because he loved to pick on her in general. It was a lot of fun for him but Landon also acted like a child at times. Maybe it’s because he was adopted and always knew it. Landon always felt like the odd man out so he just continued that streak as he got older.
He tapped on his watch, pretending to be impatient as he waited for her to hang up. "Hello my little grease monkey.” Landon had never really cared when she was covered in grease. Clothes were clothes and they could be replaced. Plus, his mother had a million tips for getting grease out. All he ever had to do was call her up. "I asked the café what you’ve ordered recently so they just made that up. They are so creepy. They have like a list of all the town businesses. Maybe they’re plotting to poison everyone.” Landon’s eyes got wide as he plopped into one of the two chairs before he reached for his sandwich. He shifted his weight around to get comfortable, finally half leaning on the back of the chair and the arm. He opened the wax paper of his sandwich as he nodded. "Sure, I know this was all a ploy so I’d be the gentlemen, rescuing the supposed damsel with food and then as soon as you eat you’ll just run out on me. Sometimes I think you are a bit too obsessed with cars.” A playful wink was sent her way before he took a large bite out of his sandwich.
Their friendship was a close one. Jesse was one of the first people he had called when his fiancé had left. That had been a hard time for him. It was still hard because he felt kind of defeated when it came to dating. He wanted to date but he wanted to know them first-to trust them. Kind of like how he trusted Jesse. He knew her so well and knew she’d never hurt anyone. It’s why he looked out for her. If any guy hurt his best girl, they’d have hell to pay. And Landon had a lot of pent up anger from being angry at his real mom to his ex-fiancé. He sometimes ran to get that anger out but he knew if the wrong person crossed his path just once, they may unleash what he tried to hold back. As long as Jesse never saw that side of him, he’d be fine. He’d hate if he ever did anything to disappoint her when she has been so good to him over the years.
After a few bits, he cleared out his throat. A swig of root beer went down his throat before he could really speak though. "So do I have to come in here every night to make sure you go home to eat? It looks crazy out in the garage! What happened to that Adam or Dave guy?” Landon honestly could barely keep track of his classmates, yet alone the employees who came and went from here. Not that Jesse was a bad boss, just she wanted employees who meshed well together. It’s not like this was some giant corporate place where it didn’t matter if people got along. No, everyone here had to get along because they were in close spaces. There really was no getting away from one another.

jesse and landon were pretty much like siblings. they teased each other quite a bit, but neither minded. even though she thought of him more as a brother, there was still an underlying attraction. she couldn't help it. landon was a hot guy, and not just in looks. he had a great personality, too. sure, he had his low points, but everyone did. jesse herself had plenty faults. no one knew that better than her employees. and her parents. they loved her, but she hardly lived up to their expectations. jesse felt bad about that, but she couldn't help it. she had to be herself, not what they wanted her to be.
she stuck her tongue out at landon when he called her a grease monkey. "watch it, or i'll make you look like one, too" jesse warned, making a threatening gesture with her still grease covered arms even though she knew he wasn't afraid of it, or her, really. it somewhat annoyed her that she couldn't intimidate landon, but on the other hand she liked that he couldn't be walked over easily. he was one of the few who didn't cow down to her and she liked that about him. though she always pretended the opposite.
jesse picked up a box of wipes and pulled one out, cleaning her hands and arms off so she could eat. she was used to being dirty, but she didn't think grease tasted very good. she laughed, throwing her head back at landon's comment. "you are SO not a small town boy. you wouldn't understand," she informed him with a wink. it was true, he didn't understand a lot of things that small towns did, and jesse found it hilarious. she loved teasing him about that sort of thing. and the fact that he still wasn't used to maine weather. just then she was in tank top, mini skirt and leggings. no jacket, not even a sweater. landon, on the other hand, had a pretty warm looking jacket on. he was still such a tourist.
she finished cleaning her self up then sat down across from him. jesse picked up a sandwich and unwrapped it. it looked so good, as she knew it would be. they had amazing food. she took a bite, then nearly choked on it because he was making her laugh again. landon had a habit of doing that. he could be such a goofball, but she loved it. jesse cleared her throat and took a sip of water. "don't worry, i won't run out on you this time." unless something unexpected came up, she could be free for the rest of the day, if she wanted to be. "you're right about that," she agreed, smiling.
jesse was beginning to think landon had her just about pegged. they both knew each other pretty well. she would definitely say they were close. they had met while his fiance was still around, but hadn't stayed in contact. after she left, landon had called her up. she had decided right then to spend time with him, because she felt so bad. but after she got to know him better, it wasn't out of pity anymore. jesse loved spending time together, and it had seemed to help him, too. if she ever saw that rotten ex-fiance of his..well, let's just say she wouldn't look the same. it made her angry that landon had been treated like that by her.
she had been taking big bites of her sandwich, very unladylike, but then, when was she ladylike? especially around someone she was comfortable with. "who says i forget to?" jesse asked, pretending to be offended at that comment. but in all truth, she had been forgetting to eat, lately. or just didn't have the time to stop and do it. she'd been eating when she got hungry, all but ignoring lunch and dinner times. she'd even been staying late at the shop, just to get things done, long after her everyone else had headed home. jesse wasn't too worried about it, though. she loved her work. but she also hadn't told her parents or landon that she'd been doing that. they'd no doubt be concerned about her and that wasn't necessary.
"it's not as bad as it seems," she told him, chuckling a little. jesse finished her sandwich, took a sip of root beer, then opened the bag of chips. the garage was rather packed, but it was little jobs that her employees could handle without her. they probably wouldn't be too happy with her, but they'd have to deal. "oh him.." jesse rolled her eyes. "adam. mister 'cocky and cool'. had it figured he knew better than any of us. i told him if he thought so he could go start his own shop." he hadn't taken too kindly to that, but jesse hadn't given him the satisfaction of quitting. she'd fired him right on the spot.

I could use somebody, I've been roaming around always looking down at all I see. Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach. You know that I could use somebody. Someone like you, and all you know and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. Landon put his arms out and turned his palms upwards. His fingers wiggled towards him rapidly. "Bring it on sista. It will only make me look even more attractive and then maybe I can finally check a threesome off my bucket list.” Of course he was kidding. Yeah, after his fiancé had left, he had gone a little wild and had a few one nighters. It was college so it’s not like anyone looked down upon him for it. Despite having his heart broken, he was still a relationship guy. He couldn’t say he’d be the same way as before-affectionate every time he was with whoever he dated-but that didn’t change things. Some guys might give up after something like this but he really didn’t. Thinking negative was no way to live his life. Well, at least for people to see. When he was alone, and really thought about things, Landon often became a bit pessimistic. Only a couple people had seen him that way, mainly at his worst days, including Jesse.
A couple of his guy friends joked around that there had to be something more. Maybe there was but the two hadn’t really crossed that threshold. That wasn’t even anything they talked about. Sometimes he thought about it because really? They were already so close so it had a potential to be a good relationship. Then again, if it didn’t work out the friendship could never be the same. Hence why Landon usually avoided relationships with girls he was friends with. That played into his cautious side of things. Not that she wasn’t attractive. While some guys thought it was a turn off with her being covered in grease, he thought it made her more attractive. After all, it proved that Jesse was independent and dedicated to something she was good at-automotive repairs. Some girls could hide their interests to show off their body and keep their make-up perfect, but not her. She didn’t care about smudges and more of her clothes were probably ruined then not. Other girls would have a caniption fit. Not his best friend though. Landon liked that. Shallow girls weren’t good for more then a one night stand. Shallow was something Jesse was not.
Landon shook her head as he chewed the morsel of food in his mouth. Turkey, ham and pepperoni with lettuce, peppers, pickles, shredded cheese and a bit of oil all piled on top of it. He was a guy who really loved food-and he meant really. Which is why he often spent time in the gym to burn off what he ate. "Nope. I’d have to stay here for years to understand it more. Which, no clue if that’ll happen. Haven’t decided what to do after next year.” Part of him missed the south, especially because that’s where his family was. Then again, he had made so many amazing friends who had no intentions of leaving Hope Harbor. Along with the decent architectural firms, there were great opportunities up here. Landon hated making these kinds of decisions. If he had someone special in his life, someone he had been with a long time, then it’d help. They could decide together. But that wasn’t what fate wanted at this point in time. "Good because we have a lot of catching up to do. I have so much to tell you after you fill me in on what’s up with your life. How are mommy and daddy dearest?”
Landon knew her relationship with her parents was a complicated one. They weren’t really the most delighted about her being a mechanic and owning the auto shop. They also weren’t the happiest with her older sister though he wasn’t a hundred percent sure why. Landon didn’t push Jesse to talk about it or anything else with her family. He’d ask form time to time but it was up to her to talk about it. He knew not to push her buttons or else she might really flip on him. And he meant flip out. Landon had only seen her angry once and didn’t want to ever be the one to make her so. Then again, that side of her might come in handy if his ex ever came around. The girl had never been a fan of Jesse to began with nor any other female friend of his. Despite him saying time and time again they were just friends, his fiancé never believed it. Maybe that was part of the issues with their relationship. Well, right now he wouldn’t get answers and wasn’t look for her to get them.
When about halfway through his sandwich, his brows went upwards. "Considering you just attacked that like a momma grizzly attacking something or someone going near her young, I think you forget to eat. Plus, your guys tattles on you when I came in.” One of his widest grins went on his face as he chuckled. "You know I’m a decent cook. If you ask you shall receive-a delicious meal that is.” setting what was left of his sandwich on the wax wrappings on his lap, he grabbed his chips and popped them open. "Ok then, if it’s not that bad then why do I sometimes see your car here at night when I drive home from class? Are you crashing here again?” Landon worried when she did that. One time he had found her just napping and he had gotten very protective. Who knew what someone could do while she slept-robbed the place, messed it up or done harm to her. That thought sent chills down his spine. Landon would be upset if anything ever happened to her.
"Oh so he saw Grumpy dwarf come out? It must have been a very cute sight.”

"ha!" she laughed loudly, "you wish.." jesse was only teasing him, of course, but she also knew he was. she wouldn't endanger their friendship by admitting to the fact that she was extremely attracted to landon. he was adorable and sweet and caring. hott, too, of course. but she tried to think of him as a friend, and nothing else. it was probably better that way. jesse wondered how he'd been doing lately, though. when he was alone, especially. that was usually when he got in downer moods, when he was alone a lot. but he sounded happy enough right now. still, she worried about it. jesse had been there for one of his bad days, but she hadn't thought any less of him. landon was a great guy, and just like the rest of the world, he wasn't perfect.
jesse stopped eating for a moment when landon talked about the possibility of leaving. she hadn't really thought about that before. he'd become somewhat of a staple in her life. he had her back, and she had his. she had other friends, of course. even some close ones, but landon was her best friend. she couldn't imagine life without him. she didn't even like thinking about it. jesse wiped the corner of her mouth with her hand, poor manners, once again, then slowly went back to eating. she hoped landon wouldn't notice the affect that comment had had on her. "have you looked for architectural work in the area?" she asked, trying to sound casual. would he really leave hope harbor? jesse would be crushed if he did. didn't he know how much he meant to her? she knew that it wasn't fair to think that way. after all, landon no doubt missed his family, and the warmer climate.
she sipped at her root beer, nodding when he mentioned the catching up they had to do. it was true. jesse felt bad, like she'd been neglecting everything and everyone, except the shop and her employees. and it was true, too. she had to do better in the future. there had to be a way to balance it out somehow. jesse sighed when landon mentioned her parents. she loved her parents, really she did. and they loved her, but they weren't supportive of her decisions in life. "they're fine, i guess," she said, leaning on her elbow and popping another chip into her mouth. in all truth, jesse hadn't seen much of them, lately. "mom called yesterday, complaining about how little they've seen of me. i know she's right, but it's not like i can help it. i've been busy." her parents didn't seem to understand how hectic it was to run a business, even though they owned their own. which only told her that they didn't want to be understanding.
jesse giggled at his description of her. but at the last part, she became indignant. "oh really?" she asked, forgetting the chips for the time being, a hand automatically moving to her hip, as she became both annoyed and irritated. "which one, joe? i bet it was charlie.." she said, the last part more to herself. jesse didn't like the fact that they'd told landon, though. they had no right to. besides, she was doing just fine. she didn't like the fact that he was grinning right now, either. it wasn't a bit funny. she crossed her arms as he mentioned his cooking. she had to admit it was true. "you're more than decent," she admitted, grudgingly. jesse was still irritated about the tattletales she apparently employed. she was definitely going to say something to them about it. she wasn't going to go to extremes and fire someone over it, of course. but she might bite their heads off.
she rolled her eyes at him. "because that's what it takes sometimes," she informed him, returning to her chips. "sometimes,"
[/b] jesse admitted, "but i don't see how that's any of your business," she snapped, getting more and more irritated, partly because landon was starting to sound like her parents, and partly because she knew he was right. she calmed down a bit when she realized she was overreacting just a little bit. "i'm sorry, landon,"[/b] she said with a sigh as she dropped the empty chip bag on her desk. "i guess i'm just tired."[/b] maybe she was working too much. that brought a smile to jesse's face and she shoved him a little. why did guys always thinking it was cute when girls got angry? it annoyed her, somewhat, but her mood was shifting back to a happier one. "i am NOT a grumpy dwarf, so shut it!"[/b] she told him, laughingly. "and, if i ever have been one, it definitely wasn't cute."[/b] jesse picked up a cookie, opening the package. "mmm, just what i need. chocolate,"[/b] she said, taking a bite. "so.. you wanna get out of here?"[/b] she asked, hoping landon would say yes. she'd have to talk to her crew before leaving, but it was her decision, in the end. I could use somebody, I've been roaming around always looking down at all I see. Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach. You know that I could use somebody. Someone like you, and all you know and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. Landon scoffed at how she easily dismissed his comment about a threesome. "Hey, no one said you had to be involved. Unless you secretly want some sexy chocolate and lady lovin then I will happily oblige to your fantasy.” His left eye moved in a wink as he kept on his lopsided grin but didn’t really laugh. Yes,he kept up with the jesting because that’s how they were. They joked about a wide range of subjects. He preferred that despite her seeing him in many different forms emotionally. Landon hated she had seen him that way but his guy friends didn’t understand. They sort of all wanted him to suck it up, move on and get laid again. While he sort of did two of those things, moving on wasn’t easy. Landon had really given himself to his ex and her leaving was a blow to him. Hell, she had told him the nitty gritty of his life dealing with being an adopted kid. No one knew about that. Maybe that’s what was one of the things that scared her off. He was open about being adopted but no one knew how he had to deal with the emotions of it. Plus, in recent years he had thought about looking for his adopted mother.
As they talked, Landon watched her carefully. One thing he liked about Jesse was she didn’t care what others thought of her. Well, for the most part. He knew what her parents said often got under her skin but other then that, she’d run around covered in grease running her mouth without a care in the world. Some guys might think it was gross but he knew it made her unique. He had also seen her cleaned up without a speck of grease. She was breathtaking and turned quite a few heads. Sometimes Landon couldn’t help but wonder if she knew the effect she had on guys. As he though of how to answer her question, he shook out his sandwich so some of the juices dripped. "Yeah there’s a place about half an hour out in Rockland but…” Landon half sighed and half grunted while he looked around the room. "I don’t know, part of me missing my parents and sister. Then another part wants me to stay because Maine is an amazing state. And another part wants me to move to wherever my birth mother lives. If I look for her that is.” There, Landon had finally let it out he was looking into finding her. After all, what adopted kid couldn’t be a little curious about their birth parents?
Landon felt bad that Jesse’s parents-her real parents-could be such dinks at times while he was adopted and had amazing ones. How fair was that? Not that he wished going through what he did on anyone but he thought they were morons for pushing her so much. "They could come down here. You know, if they weren’t afraid of a little dirt and grease. Especially on their girl because that is such a travesty.” Landon rolled his eyes at the thought. Just hearing about them made his blood boil. "I think you send them a photo of how cute you look covered in grease. I’ll even take one-now!” He had prepared with his phone in his hand. Quickly he snapped a photo before he laughed. While she had been great during his down days, Landon preferred being like this with her. The two of them acting goofy and picking on one another.
"I’ll never tell.“ After doing it in that creepy voice from the movie Don’t Say A Word, he pretended to zip a zipper across his mouth, made a locking motion and flicked his invisible key aside. "Besides, they just know they can’t really make you eat but I can try. At least if you get mad at me, I’ll just push back.” He hated to get in even the tiniest argument with her but sometimes it was needed. As she snapped at him, he shook his head. He hated when she did this. People shwoed genuine concern-not the crap her parents called concern-and she got mad. Landon set his food aside and leaned forward in his chair. "Hey look at me.” When they made eye contact, he shook his head. "Don’t do that to me. I am saying something because I’m concerned is all. I just worry when you focus on work too much, you forget to do things you need like eat and sleep somewhere comfortable. I don’t want to have the guys calling me because you passed out form exhaustion.” He paused for a moment as he sighed. Landon wasn‘t stupid that they‘d called him or one of her other friends before her parents in any situation. Unless a car fell on her or some tool cut off her arm and they needed them as proxies, no need to concern them. Plus, they‘d just stress her out more. "Just let me make you some meals that you can put in your fridge and freezer ok? That way you can eat when you work late.”
Landon hoped she realized how much he really did care. She was there for him and now he wanted to be there for her. He shook his head before he finished off his food. "Yes it is. Your nose kind of crinkles up and your brow gets real stiff. Actually, you look like an angry bunny when you’re mad!” As he got up to toss his stuff, he nodded. It might do her good to leave here even for an hour or so. "Yeah that sounds good. Any place in particular you’d like to go milady?”

jesse laughed as he continued to joke with her. "i'm just fine.. but you can have at it." she smiled back as he winked at her. landon probably didn't know it, but she loved that lopsided grin of his. in fact, she needed to get a picture of him making that exact face, one of these days. she brought her mind back to the threesome he'd mentioned, deciding whether that actually appealed to her. maybe not a threesome, but landon had appealed to her for quite some time now.
she wasn't vain, for the most part. there were times when jesse worried how she looked, but it wasn't often. she'd go anywhere covered in grease and not even care. though she tried to make sure she was cleaned up when around her parents. it was a source of contention already, and the last thing jesse wanted to do was add to it. it was hard keeping the peace with her parents at times. she listened as landon told her about the one job option. a half hour wasn't bad, and she liked rockland, but it wasn't her decision, of course. her heart sank as he continued, talking about the people he missed. jesse didn't say anything, continuing to stare at her food as she ate it, until he mentioned his birth mother. she looked up, surprise crossing her face. she'd known he was adopted, of course, and she also knew he'd been curious about his birth mother, but landon hadn't mentioned it in a while. and he certainly had never said anything about looking for her.
jesse didn't express an opinion for what he should do, mostly because he hadn't asked for one. but she also didn't think it would be fair of her to beg him to stay in maine when he was considering other things that may be more important. "it's definitely something to think about," jesse commented, keeping her tone unconcerned. she hoped.
she made a face when landon mentioned her parents coming to the shop. "they'd never," and jesse wasn't entirely sure she wanted them to. her shop had started to feel like the last hold out. it was one place her parents would never come. they'd show up at her apartment when they felt like it, even when jesse didn't want to see them. so the shop was a nice option for her. "i don't like them around the shop, anyway," she added with a shrug. they'd no doubt be critical. point out every dirty, grease spot. jesse kept a clean shop, though. as clean as could be expected, anyway. though lately she hadn't been able to keep up with that.
jesse laughed when he mentioned a photo. they wouldn't be thrilled with that, though she knew landon would never send it to them. she crossed her eyes and made an 'o' with her lips as he took it. when he laughed after the fact jesse grabbed the phone out of his hand so she could see the picture. as soon as she saw it, she was laughing, too. she wasn't obsessed with how she looked in pictures, though, like anyone else, she didn't like bad ones. jesse didn't care at the moment since they were just messing around. it wasn't like landon hadn't seen that face before, and lots more that were probably less flattering.
she glared at him as he pretended to zip his mouth closed. jesse was not amused by it at all. once she got mad at some one, she didn't think anything they did was funny. "i know," she replied in an irritated tone. landon had no problem pushing back when she got in these moods, and she hated that. she didn't look up at him right away, but eventually, and with a sigh, she looked him in the eye. jesse saw only concern there. unfounded, she thought, but still, landon was being his wonderful, caring self, and she was being rude and selfish. "i know, i know" she replied, when he started going on about the things she was, and shouldn't be doing. but when he mentioned getting a call from her guys because she'd passed out, she shook her head emphatically. "that won't happen." landon was entirely too concerned about her, in her opinion. jesse knew her limits, and was in no danger of exceeding them. she smiled when he offered to make her meals. sweet, but unnecessary. she was going to accept, anyway, so maybe he'd worry less. "that'd be great. you know i love your cooking." jesse was no great cook herself. she could do it, of course, but she wasn't creative with it. basically she needed a recipe to follow.
"i know you're just doing this because you care, landon, but honestly. i'm fine," she told him reassuringly. "i'm maintaining my weight," for the most part, "and i feel perfectly fine," most of the time, anyway. jesse hadn't told anyone about the dizzy spells she sometimes got, or the fact that she felt like she was going to pass out at times, but neither of those happened very often, so it wasn't something she was really concerned about. especially since she was more focused on the shop. as far as weight loss, jesse had only lost maybe eight pounds in three weeks. so she wasn't worried about that, either.
jesse gasped when he described her as an angry bunny, and punched him in the arm for it. "you know what you look like?" she asked, standing as she reached across to tickle him, "a big, fat gorilla!" so far he'd called her a grease monkey, a momma grizzly, a grumpy dwarf, and an angry bunny, so she figured he deserved it. jesse found his 'insults' entertaining, though. she shrugged when he asked where she wanted to go. no place in particular came to mind. "anywhere's fine with me," she replied, throwing her mess away.

I could use somebody, I've been roaming around always looking down at all I see. Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach. You know that I could use somebody. Someone like you, and all you know and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. Landon really wasn’t that kind of guy. Yes, he had some casual hook ups but never got too crazy. Then again, he also never got with anyone real crazy while sober. He was always trying to be respectful of his parents when he lived at home. They had sacrificed a lot to adopt him. They saved up for years which was something because they weren’t the richest people around. Compared to where he could have ended up if they hadn’t come around he was thankful. Sure, he had tried many different things and drank before he was of legal age, but he made sure never to get arrested or anything else. If he ever disappointed them, then Landon wouldn’t forgive himself. It would be even worse if his sister was disappointed in him too.
Landon looked over Jesse’s face as he talked about where he wanted to move. Her expression was unreadable. He was hoping she’d have some sort of input. This was a huge decision for him. He already knew what his parents and sister wanted. And he had no idea where his mother was or if she even wanted to see him. His fingers scratched at his chin as his eyes scanned the floor. "Yeah, it is. I know I have a year but I hoping to figure it out sooner. It’s not an easy decision.” It disappointed him a lot that she didn’t have an opinion. At all. The girl usually unafraid to talk back to him seemed to clam up all of a sudden. He hoped if he did move away, she wouldn’t grow distant from him all of a sudden. That’d hurt a lot more then he’d probably admit. After all, guys weren’t supposed to really talk about their feelings. Even after the split he only did when really pushed or drunk. Not all girls liked the whole sensitive guy thing.
If he was truthful, Landon was jealous that Jesse’s parents were around. They may be awful but she knew her real parents. Yes, he had amazing parents who he loved and were great to him. That wasn’t the same as knowing the person who gave birth to him. Even if she didn’t want to know him, he just wanted to see her once. To hear her voice once. He wanted to see if he had her nose and if they had the same crinkles around their eyes. When she laughed, did it seem like she stopped breathing for a second? And did Landon get his quirk of pulling his ear when nervous from her? Plus, whatever happened to his father. He had talked to his parents about this but he knew it hurt them so he had stopped talking about it long ago. Instead he kept in until he decided if he wanted to call the adoptiona agency. He had copied the papers that his parents had long ago. Including his birth certificate. That was the key part because it had her name. Just having the name and state wasn’t enough. Landon needed more and only the adoption agency had that.
"Maybe they’ll turn their thought process around one day.” If anything for her sake so they could actually be a family. They just didn’t see how amazing their daughter was. She was so skilled when it came to cars all while trying to keep their emotions at bay. Sometimes, to him, it seemed like she was wearing herself thin to get everything done here, make them happy as well as do what she needed to. That was one reason he did everything he could to make Jesse smile. That smile just added to her spunk. And she packed a lot in that little package. The amount of photos in his phone and on his computer of her was unreal. If he ever got a girlfriend, and it wasn’t her, any girl would surely be upset seeing all these photos. That smile made it harder whenever she got mad at him. That’s why he often pushed back so hard. He wouldn’t back down, especially when he knew he shouldn’t be scolded. It’s not like Landon was demanding she leave the shop. No, he was just showing concern about her long hours.
"Oh really? You can guarantee you’ll never faint for any reason what so ever?” He knew he shouldn’t push that much but no one knew what would happen in the future. Which is why he made no guarantees to anyone about where he as living. And he hardly mentioned finding his birth mother. No one knew what any day aside room the present moments held. Reaching up to scratch at the back of his neck he shook his head. "I will take your word. For now. But when I get home tonight I am going to cook up a storm of stuff to freeze and thaw plus fridge meals for you. And I think we should finally buy a pull out cot for here.” Maybe throwing ‘we’ in would make her comply. If not, Jesse may come into work one day with one randomly in her office with no way to return it. Then she’d have to keep it. Though he wasn’t the richest person possible he always tried to get things he felt like his friends needed. Even if they didn’t ask because that’s how Landon was raised-do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
Landon tried to get the most serious face he could as he stared at her. "You know, I think calling me a gorilla is racist. I take offense ot that.” That was probably the longest he held a straight face before his pearly whites came out in a heart stopping grin. As he cleaned up his food items, he thought over where to go. There were a ton of possibilities. Currently it was neaing the end of school hours so most places would be flooded with students very soon. He didn’t want to have to move through crowds. "We could go sit in my car by the harbor if you want. Most of the boats will be coming in and it’s a great sight when they do.” Of course, she had grown up around here so he figured she already knew that. Still, it was breath taking to him. The amount of lobstering boats could sometimes be overwhelming and yet amazing. They had seafood down south but the waters weren’t cool enough for lobsters. Most were shipped from New England, not fresh. He enjoyed having fresh, New England lobster. And chowder. And going ot clam bakes.
"I’ll go get the car started.” While Jesse took care of whatever she had to, he went to his vehicle. He had some books on the floor of the front seat. He swung the passenger door open to grab at them and carelessly threw them over the seat. He could have opened the back door and set them in carefully but that wasn’t him. Once that was settled, he left the door open but went around to his side of the key. When the key met the ignition and the car turned over, he rubbed his hands together. Nope, he’d never get used to Maine weather unless he made it his permanent home.

jesse had had a fling last year, but that wasn't normal for her. the guy had been visiting, so it had lasted a total of five days. she had known that he would be leaving, so he didn't break her heart or anything. would she do it again? probably not. jesse was more of the long term relationship type people. though, she'd only had two boyfriends in her life, so she didn't have a lot of experience as far as relationships went. that was mostly because she was so consumed with cars and anything to do with them. but if the right guy ever came along, jesse would no doubt be distracted from it.
she nodded at his comment. "the sooner the better." though jesse was thinking just the opposite. she couldn't help it. landon really meant pretty much everything to her. she looked forward to seeing him the most out of every person she knew. and he was probably the one person who could get her out of the shop willingly. anyone else tried, and it was a battle. though no one except her parents did that to her. and some of her girl friends who wanted to go partying or something. the nice thing about them was, if she said no, they didn't keep bugging her about it. "you already know what i think," jesse told him with a laugh. she hoped. but how could he not?
jesse felt bad for landon. sure, he had great parents, but they weren't his real ones. here she knew her real parents, and though she loved them and vise versa, she complained quite a bit about them. though she was trying to stop doing so in front of landon. it made her sound ungrateful, which she could be, she knew. but jesse knew that he'd do anything to know his real parents, and she took hers for granted so much of the time. she hadn't realized just how much finding his mom was on landon's mind, though. it was only natural, of course. she just hoped he wouldn't be hurt by it. he'd already been hurt enough.
"maybe when hell freezes over," she replied, rolling her eyes. jesse was being cynical about it, she knew. but it was hard not to be. they'd always expected her to get out of hope harbor, go to college, and start some sort of amazing career. then, when that hope was lost, they wanted her to get a steady boyfriend, preferably rich, get engaged, eventually get married, and have children. jesse was content with her life the way it was right now, though. sure, she wanted to get married someday, but she didn't see that as happening in the near future. especially since she didn't even have a boyfriend right now. nor was she actively looking for one.
"you know that's not what i meant," jesse replied, frowning. that was a ridiculous question to ask, and landon knew it. "i just know my limits, and i'm no where near exceeding them." sure, she was often tired, but that was part of not only owning your own business, but running it, too. a little tiredness never hurt anyone. jesse smiled. "like i'd say no to that." landon was a fabulous cook, plus, she always enjoyed a home cooked meal. ah, the cot again. that he kept insisting she needed. "see that?" she asked, pointing. "that's called a couch. most people sit on them, but you can also lay on them, too." it wasn't a very nice looking one, but it was comfortable. especially since the indents in the cushions now conformed to jesse shape. "and yes, it's comfortable," she added, suspecting that he'd ask about that.
jesse burst out laughing. first because he was trying to keep a straight face, and second because his racist comment. she was anything but that, and he knew it. "gorilla, gorilla, gorilla!" she practically yelled, sticking her tongue out at him as she continued to giggle. jesse sat back in her chair, a grin still on her face as she finished off her root beer. "i'd like that," she replied. she'd loved doing just that since she was little, and still enjoyed it. though nowadays jesse rarely had the time to.
she stood up, tossing her bottle in the garbage can. "ok," jesse replied. "i'll be out in a few." she was going to change, not wanting to get grease on the inside of landon's car. she always kept extra clothes at the shop, in case her parents decided to stop by her apartment or invite her over. they tended to do that when jesse was at her dirtiest. she quickly changed, cleaned the grease off her face, and combed her fingers through her hair. it was still a bit messy, though she didn't really care, and she knew landon wouldn't, either.
jesse grabbed a light jacket as she walked out of her office. she'd almost forgot to mention to joe that she was leaving, so she walked over to the vehicle he was now under and kicked lightly at his leg. "hey, i'm heading out. you got everything covered?" joe smiled and reassured her that he did. it was clear that he thought it a good thing for her to be out of the shop for a while. "ok, thanks, joe," jesse replied, smiling, than headed out the door. she walked to the passenger's side, noting that landon looked cold. she tried not to laugh, since it wasn't that cold, in her opinion. she hadn't even needed to put her jacket on. jesse buckled up and settled in her seat. "ready captain?" she asked, smiling at him.

I could use somebody, I've been roaming around always looking down at all I see. Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach. You know that I could use somebody. Someone like you, and all you know and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. Landon shifted around as he scratched at his cheek not because he itched, but because it was a nervous twitch when deep in thought. ”Yeah, I know. If I stayed here I’d probably get my own place.” Not that Landon hated his roommate but once done school he would have more time to work and afford his own place. When she sort of piped in her opinion, Landon nodded with a slight grin on his face and a chuckle leaving his lips. ”Yes, I do. Otherwise who else will keep you from throwing a wrench at your employees?” Jesse really wasn’t that bad of a person or a boss but he liked to tease her that she was a tyrant. And he teased her often about it. He actually respected her. She took on a lot of responsibility with this place at a rather young age. That took guts. Guts which Landon did not have.
”Parents can surprise you. Hey, maybe if you meet a respectable guy with a career that shocks them in a good way they’ll get off your case. Then there’s no need for a degree because he can take care of you.” Hey, some parents got off their kid’s backs if they scored a “good catch” for a partner. Thankfully his parents couldn’t care less either way who was with as long as he was happy. Hell, they’d support if one of their children were gay that’s how great they were! For adopted parents, Landon really had hit the mother load. Same with his friends. The ones he was close with were great. He had ones he wasn’t particularly close either that he still got along well with. With this particular friend, he couldn’t help but scrutinize her a bit. Landon knew her and that she never let on at how bad things could be. ”I believe you but don’t be surprised if I suddenly appear in the window above said couch.”
To him that couch didn’t look all that great but he didn’t want to keep arguing. Instead he kept his mouth shut so they could enjoy the rest of the day together. Landon really did prefer a normal conversation or jesting over arguing any day. Honestly, who preferred to argue? As she continued to pick on him about being a “gorilla” he snapped his fingers forward as if to grab her tongue. ”Hey! Do that one more time and your tongue is mine.” He opened and shut his thumb and first two fingers together in a pinching motion to show he was serious. To Landon, this was how life should be if you didn’t absolutely have to work. Full of humor and ease with someone you trusted. That someone in this case being Jesse, obviously. When home it was his sister, Elizabeth, Zack or Skeet as he was called. Those were people he sometimes missed while up here.
Yet, as he sat in his car waiting for Jesse, he also knew the same feeling would happen if he left Hope Harbor. Maybe it’d be even worse because the people up here were his first friends he had made as an adult. Sure, high school friends were great but some of them could get stuck in high school mode. Landon wasn’t while some of them back in the Carolinas were. He was already in a weird rut of his own, he didn’t need to add to it. As he watched Jesse come towards the car he made a decision to talk to her more about it. Yes, even if she was giving him simple hours earlier she was his best option to bounce ideas off of. Plus, perhaps it was time he talked about finding his birth mother to someone.
After she was buckled in, Landon shook his head while pulling out. ”Seriously? Not even slightly cold?” The harbor was only about a ten minute drive which was good. The car could warm up so they’d have someplace to sit that was comfortable-at least to him-until they went walking around. If they went walking around that is. At least it wasn’t snowing yet. ”What’s the secret to staying so warm? Eating a dozen peppers? Shooting hot sauce into your veins instead of heroin?”

jesse smiled a little as she saw landon scratching at his cheek, knowing it was one of those things he did when he was deep in thought. her smile faded some, however, thinking about how much she'd miss that and other little things if he left. "that sounds nice," jesse replied, as he mentioned getting his own place. she enjoyed her apartment, even though it was on the small side, but then, it was just her. she laughed as his teasing her. "i do, anyway," jesse informed him, jokingly. she got mad at them, of course, though she had yet to throw a wrench at someone's head.
what landon describe was exactly how her parents were. they were middle class, though high up on it, and liked to think they were in the upper class. it annoyed jesse, though she kept that opinion to herself. "i know," she said with a sigh. that rebel streak in her came out, however, when it came to this particular subject. part of her wanted to find a fisherman here in hope harbor, just to bring them down a notch or two. though jesse would never marry anyone if she wasn't in love with them. date for a while, maybe, but nothing permanent. "ok, that just sounds creepy.." she told him, making a face. "you'd make a great stalker."
jesse was glad when landon didn't say anything else about the couch. she didn't like fighting with him, honestly. they fought like siblings, or even an old married couple, then laughed about it afterwards because of how ridiculous it was. jesse gasped a little and jumped back as he snapped his fingers towards her tongue. "ooooh, i'm so scared!" she said, trying not to laugh as she made her eyes big like she was scared. "i'm just terrified of the big, fat, gorilla!" she exclaimed, laughing loudly.
she chuckled a little. "no, not at all," jesse replied. it wasn't that chilly out to her. she guessed it was in the low fifties, which was still pretty warm for maine. she laughed, throwing her head back. landon could be so silly, at times. but then, so could she. "of course not! that's disgusting." jesse didn't like spicy food, and the thought of shooting hot sauce into her veins was nasty, to her. "but to answer your question, i don't know," she said with a shrug."i'm just used to it, i guess." jesse was looking forward to just sitting and talking with landon. they really did need to catch up.

I could use somebody, I've been roaming around always looking down at all I see. Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach. You know that I could use somebody. Someone like you, and all you know and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. If Landon could afford his own place now, he would definitely get one. He hated sharing a place with someone. Unless it was a girlfriend then that was different. But after breaking up with his fiancée he had no choice but to rent on the spare bedroom. Otherwise he would not be able to eat and foodstamps was not something he wanted to do. No, he sucked it up and did the lesser of the too evils but getting someone to live with him. Plus, it gave him a little wiggle room to be able to do things without asking his parents for a ton of money to help get by. ”Yes, they’ve showed me the evidence. All those black streaks...you must lay the whole thing across them.” One day he would get hit by a wrench if he kept joking like this. Hopefully not anytime soon though. Then again, he may be able to heed her off and get the wrench out of her hands.
Landon felt bad for what he had said. He meant it to be funny but he knew, in her case, it was probably something her parents had brought up. ”It was a joke. I wouldn’t want you to be with someone just to make them happy.” He paused a moment. ”I wish they’d realize how great you are, even without a degree. They don’t know what they miss when they only see that.” From that moment on he’d leave that subject alone unless she wanted to talk about it. Landon knew it was a touchy one for her and hated upsetting her. They had just finished their little spat and he didn’t feel like starting a new one.
Landon shrugged and jutted his lower lip out just slightly in sarcasm, while an equally sarcastic frown formed. ”Hey I’m black, partially bald and not from around Maine. I’m the walking cliché to be a stalker up here.” Landon had no issues making fun of the fact he was black. Up here he stood out a lot. If he went to the cities like Augusta or Portland then there was more diversity. Not in the small towns, though. There wasn’t very much diversity at all. Not that he was complaining just an observation. ”I will get pliers and catch it that way if I must.”
As they drove behind a car, Landon simply nodded to what she was saying. The waterfornt wasn’t far so as soona s he was able to, he took the side road that led to the harbor. ”I love my warm, Carolina weather. You would too. Then again, you may die because you are a polar bear and only used to the cold.” When he found a spot away from where most cars parked, Landon put the car into park. It was on a little cliff about fifty feet from the docks. Some trees partially hid it out of sight, a place he had found while exploring the town one times. Landon liked finding little places to hide away when things got tough. ”Finally, peace. I’ve missed this.” By this he meant her and them hanging out. It had been far too long since they just hung out. ”So aside from work and normal parental drama, anything else new?”
