Jude’s favorite day of the week was Sunday. It was the one day a week he got a break from working in the office. Unless there was an extremely large case that is. Right now there was no such thing going on. He decided to take a trip to the beach. Not that the water was the warmest around. If anything, it could be described as downright frigid despite the 90-something-degree weather. That’s why he had a rather thick towel nearby to wrap himself up quickly once he was done and a dry shirt ready. Still, the chilly waters were enough to keep him from hitting the bottles a little earlier then normal.
No, Jude wasn’t an alcoholic but he was beyond stressed out. There was a lot that was placed on his shoulders when taking on his father’s law firm. And it’s not like he could really talk about any of it with anyone outside of his family. Sure, in some sense everyone in the town knew but that didn’t change that fact. It was an unspoken rule that no one was to ever utter a word about what happened fifteen years ago. So all Jude could do was drown away his sorrows. There was no one in his life to bring positive energy. He had a strained relationship with his parents so aside from work and family gatherings, he avoided them as much as possible.
As he stood amongst the waves, Jude dug his toes into the sand underneath. With each passing wave, it shifted the granules so he sank a little bit deeper. He wasn’t out far enough that he was worried. Plus he had taken swimming lessons since he was a small kid. Those le to him ding the swim team all through his schooling years. In college their swim team actually did fairly well. Sometimes he missed those simpler days. When he could party, swim, study and date without the weight of responsibility looming over his head at all times.

AND WHILE YOUR HEAD IS SPINNINGHOLD TIGHT IT'S JUST BEGINNING* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * jesse loved the beach. not as much as cars and poetry, but it was still enjoyable. the heat from the sun contrasting with the chilly water. of course, natives like herself were used to it. it was funny watching the faces of the tourists as they felt the temperature of the water for the first time. she didn't think it was that bad, though she would have preferred warmer, of course. jesse didn't stay in too long, either. a half hour to an hour at most, lay in the sun for a while to warm up, then back in if she felt like it. which she usually did.
today was sunday, so she didn't have work. jesse closed the shop at noon on saturdays and all day sunday. she loved her job, but she also enjoyed a break once in a while. sometimes she'd stay later on saturdays to finish a car or something. after all, she owned it, so she could come and go when she pleased. jesse loved that. she lived alone and owned her own business. she couldn't imagine having anymore freedom than that.
her apartment was pretty close to the beach. a little over five minutes to walk, so that's what she usually did. jesse noted that it wasn't too terribly busy, for a sunday, anyway. but for most people that would mean it was pretty packed. she looked for an open space to set her things down and finally found one, though it was a little bit of a walk from where she was. jesse made her way over, stepping around couples and families, till she reached the spot. she didn't have a lot with her. a beach bag that held a few snacks, a water bottle, suntan lotion and a towel. she pulled the towel out and laid it down, took a sip of her water, then kicked off her flip flops. jesse reached up and pulled her shorts off, then lifted her swim dress over her head. she set everything in a neat pile and finally took her hat and sunglasses off, laying them on top of everything else. she rubbed in her suntan lotion, even though it wouldn't last long in the water, and started walking towards the water.
jesse stepped into the water, goosebumps raising on her skin at contact. a shiver ran through her body, but she kept going. she was up to mid thigh before she noticed one particular person out of everyone else. maybe because pretty much everyone else was swimming around, laughing and having a good time, in general. but not him. as she got a bit closer she noticed who it was. jude winslet. jesse didn't know him personally, but everyone knew who the winslets were. they owned the law firm in hope harbor, and were very well to do. but the few times she'd seen jude, he hadn't looked very happy. but she could be wrong.
she was sure he had not a clue who she was. sure, they'd both grown up in the small town, but he was at least eight years older than her. not exactly someone she would have had the chance to hangout with. jesse had a crush on him when she was younger, of course, but that was years ago. she still thought he was a good looker. every girl in town did, plus they were probably after his money, which was just silly, in her opinion.
jesse sank into the water, going under all the way as she began swimming in his general direction. the waves carried her pretty far without much effort, and she popped up a few feet away from him and to the side. she smoothed her hair back and placed her hands on her hips, staring up at the beautiful blue sky. it really was the perfect day for a swim. jesse wasn't quite sure how to start up a conversation with jude. she'd never talked to him before, but she figured it was probably about time. she'd always wanted to know more about him, and what better way? nice day, huh? she commented, glancing in his direction for a moment, then returning her gaze to the sky, lifting a hand to block the sun from completely blinding her.

Being out here made him think back to before he got back from law school. Before he chose to work with his dad. Before everything went down hill. Under the small pier is where him and one of his ex-girlfriends used to hang out. And down about a mile was a little section of cliffs that curved, providing a perfect place for a late night bonfire. Him and his friends would gather together, enjoying the times that they could have together before they all went off on their careers. Sometimes they kept in contact with one another but it wasn’t very often. They had all grown up and gone different ways. Jude’s path was a bit darker. He willing shut out a lot of people. Lately, he was letting some people in but it was difficult. Since his father revealed a huge secret to him, he had a hard time trusting people. If his father had told him about what had happened, who knew if other people involved in this had kids and told them as well? This issue left a bitterness in his life. Part of him liked it, thought it suited with him being a lawyer. Another part wished that Jude could just get back to how he once was.
Briefly, he sank his body down under the water. He held a large breath of air in as he sank to the bottom which wasn’t that far. He was used to swimming from the years he did younger. His eyes opened under the water and he looked around. The salt water stung his eyes but he let it happen. With competitive swimming he got used to much worse in pools. Chlorine was awful compared to being in the ocean. He observed the legs of people. Some stayed in the relatively same position but they were usually helping their kid swim. Most he saw were kicking to propel themselves through the water. After he felt satisfied, he brought himself above water. A hand pushed his hair back, slicking it before he wiped at his face. The left hand rubbed his right shoulder, a problem one for years as he heard movement behind him. Before the person made themselves known, he was already back to his previous position-standing as he wiggled his toes, at most swaying from side to side. His hands lingered under the water, wiggling about so not to freeze. Eventually he would get out.
Jude looked sideways when the girl made herself known. She looked familiar. His brows knitted together as he tried to place her. Probably just someone he knew from around town. There were plenty of people who had lived here their whole lives. Plus, being in a half drunk phase most nights, it was easy to remember a face but not a name. his face nodded in agreement as his hands moved just under the surface, shifting the water around. ”Yeah it is. Better then most around here.” He smiled as bright as he could. Jude’s smile had dimmed some over the years. Only when around someone he knew well did his old self shine through a bit more. Otherwise, he held a bit of himself back.
He sent his attention forwards for a moment again. After he cleared his throat, he turned back to the brunette. While he was normally charismatic, when caught off guard it took him a second to get back on his game. ”So you just visiting our fine little town or should I remember who you are? Hopefully we haven’t met in court. Then this would be complicated with talking to you.” Ah, a bit of the old Jude was finally shining through some.

AND WHILE YOUR HEAD IS SPINNINGHOLD TIGHT IT'S JUST BEGINNING* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * jesse had never wanted to be rich. comfortable, yes. but not rich. from what she'd seen of the wealthy, they may look and act happy, but few actually were. she knew that first hand from a few of her girl friends. she'd always wondered if the same was true of the winslets. she supposed they could really be happy, and they always looked it, save jude, who, in her opinion, wasn't very good at looking it. it wasn't that he couldn't give a convincing smile, but there was always something behind it. or she was just imagining things.
very true. she didn't mind too much, though. she wasn't the kind that liked hot weather all the time. jesse smiled back, somewhat surprised. he had a nice smile, she thought. she enjoyed seeing others smiling or laughing, maybe because she liked doing both herself. she studied jude as he looked else where for a moment. no wonder she'd had a crush on him. she smiled a little as she thought back to those days, especially when she realized it really wasn't that long ago. jesse was glad they hadn't met back then. she was sure she would have embarrassed herself.
jesse had been concentrating on the feel of the sand under her feet and curling her toes when she heard jude clear his throat. she looked up at him, smiling as he questioned her, and laughing at the last bit. well, i'd be flattered if you did know me. but don't feel bad, she said. i know who you are, though, mr. winslet, jesse informed him teasingly. she shook her head firmly, laughing as she tucked some hair behind her ear. i've never been in court, so no worries there. i own the auto shop. mack's. the winslets had brought their vehicles to her shop before, but not religiously, so she didn't expect any recognition.

In the last few months, Jude had thought about leaving the firm just because of how miserable it made him. Even doing activities he once loved like swimming and rowing lost their appeal. About the only thing he liked to do was go camping just about anywhere. He’d pack up his car, turn off his phone and drive away for a couple days. No one bothered him then. Each time he’d go to another place so no one knew where to find him. Worked like a charm, really. Usually Jude’s father would get angry when he got home. He thought Jude should be an upstanding citizen and always be around town to be at everyone’s beck and call. That wasn’t Jude.
Everything he did in life was to please his father. And now he regretted that.
Jude nodded, feeling bad he didn’t recognize her. Well, in all fairness, he did recognize her just not her name. He rubbed the back of his neck nervously and chuckled. ”Um alright so you know who I am.” He awkwardly stared at her for a few moments. Mack’s Auto…Mack’s. ”Oh! I know you. Well, sort of. You’re Jesse! Our firm handled Mack’s will.” afterwards he made an awkward face and chuckled. ”Sorry, I didn’t mean to make that sound so happy. I just hate not knowing who I’m talking to.”
There was a slight breeze which gave him goose bumps when it went over the water droplets on his skin. He decided to sink down in the water until it just about covered his shoulders. ”So how’s the shop doing? It surprised dad and I when he changed the will.”

AND WHILE YOUR HEAD IS SPINNINGHOLD TIGHT IT'S JUST BEGINNING* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * lots of jesse's school friends had been dying to get out of hope harbor. they were curious about the rest of the world, eager to learn new things and such. not that jesse wasn't, but everything she'd wanted to learn about was around her. she didn't need to travel the world or go to some fancy college just to 'find herself'. she'd found herself already. at ten years old, to be exact. she was lucky. it took most people quite a long time to figure what they wanted out of life. of course, being a mechanic wasn't all jesse wanted. she dreamed of getting married some day and having kids and all the adventure that included. maybe it was a simple life, but that's what she wanted.
her parents didn't appreciate the route of life she was taking. they weren't rich and snobby, but they did have a certain standard they expected their children to live up to. her older sister had all her life, until they'd had a falling out two years ago. jesse still hoped they'd reconcile, especially since it was a small town and hard to avoid each other forever. she still spent time with both her parents and her sister, but holidays were awkward. she hated it. jesse, on the other, had been the 'problem child'. not that she had been a brat or especially rebellious, but she was tomboyish and not as girly as they would have liked. as she got older she was interested in cars, not the restaurant business. then the shop was left to her, wiping college out of the picture in jesse's mind. another disappointment for her parents. she really wasn't trying to hurt them, she was just being herself.
jesse held back a laugh at his awkwardness, nodding when he stated the obvious. who didn't know the winslets.. they'd have to be living under a rock if they didn't. jude surprised her again when he said he did know who she was. oh, yeah. of course.. she said, when he'd explained, realizing how obvious the connection was now. jesse knew she should have said more but it was still hard for her to talk about the old man. after all, mack taught her all he knew, and had been like a grandfather to her. they'd known each other for only six years, but it'd felt like a whole lot longer. it's ok, she reassured him with a smile. that's understandable.
it's going really well. mack had quite the reputation so i'm trying to live up to that. jesse had struggled with keeping old costumers coming back after mack passed, but after two years it was getting easier. the first year had definitely been the hardest. i wouldn't give it up for anything, though, she stated. now matter how hard she had to work, jesse would keep that shop open if at all possible. they weren't struggling right now, though. there were slow days here and there, of course, but most were pretty busy, if not jam packed. yeah, we got pretty close. jesse crossed her arms, looking down at the water as she blinked back tears. she hoped jude wouldn't see, feeling silly for tearing up. she rubbed her arms a little as a chill went through her. the breeze was picking up and she was getting pretty chilly. i don't know about you, but i'm freezing, she said with a laugh. wanna head back? not that they had to head back together, but she was enjoying their conversation.

Jude nodded, feeling bad for how he had put his foot in his mouth. He sometimes did that when out of the court room. For some reason, the intense pressure made him feel calmer about things. When in any courthouse, he felt like he knew what he was doing and really, he did. Since being enlightened to the things that had happened around here he really didn’t feel the same outside of work. He often stumbled through new situations. Most of his life was routine so usually he didn’t have any issues. This being a somewhat new situation, he was making a right ass of himself. Honestly, it was no wonder he couldn’t recognize her. Last time him and his father has spoken to her, he was pretty sure she was a couple years younger and was definitely crying. Even if you knew someone really well, once they let lose with the tears sometimes they looked, as well as acted, completely different. ”No, I’m sorry. My mind is so scattered I’m not really being mindful of your feelings. Honestly, most of my job is to tear people down on the stand so I think subconsciously, that bit of me comes out whether I want it to or not.” He winked to show he was just jesting around. Yes, sometimes he had to be ruthless but with his own clients, Jude knew when he had to show some compassion. More often, he needed to then not. There had only been a handful of times he had a serious pain in the ass client who needed the rules laid out for him.
Jude may be a lawyer but that didn’t mean he was to be walked all over. His father did enough of that by forcing things upon him that he didn’t want. So outside of that situation, Jude did everything he could to gain control of his own life. Perhaps that’s why he was slowly self destructing with his drinking. Sure, he had yet to get into an accident or anything like that but if he kept it up, he probably would. Though he logically knew that, it didn’t change the fact that he still kept up with this unhealthy pattern. So far, no one knew about Jude’s problem so it’s not like anyone had to worry. When at work, he was completely put together and presentable. Not even his father knew about his son’s issues. Though, it shouldn’t be a shocker. Once court was done, there were times that Jude’s father indulged in a few drinks in the office. Jude had observed it a few times though he hadn’t said anything out of respect. After all, his father was also his boss.
Jude gazed at his hands. His fingers had become prunie. ”Nah I should get out myself. Besides, I’d enjoy some company. Came here by myself so it’d be nice if I could change that up.” As he turned from the horizon where the ocean met the sky, he gazed at the fairly crowded beach. His eyes fell on his things. Good, it didn’t look like they had been touched. ”I brought some food. Maybe we can get to know one another. After all, last time we met wasn’t the best time to talk.” Despite not really liking anyone around his father’s age, or even a few years younger, he did enjoy getting know the people around his own age. In school, he pretty much knew everyone in his grade, a few people the grade below him and then whoever did the sports teams with him. After that, he honestly never put an effort forward. The all he cared about was sports, the parties that happened afterwards and whomever he was dating at the time. He could admit now, he was pretty selfish and vain then. He was better now or at least he thought so. Jude tried to right his wrongs, especially since there was one kid him and his friends picked on often. A few years ago they had run into each other. Jude had apologized and the spoke for awhile. The guy said he forgave Jude but that didn’t change things. He had been ignorant in school. Now knowing how much crueler people could get, he wish things could be different.

AND WHILE YOUR HEAD IS SPINNINGHOLD TIGHT IT'S JUST BEGINNING* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * jesse knew jude felt bad, but it really wasn't his fault. she wasn't upset with him, though a little embarrassed about tearing up. she didn't like showing that side to anyone, especially someone she didn't know well. being the tomboy she was, she put up a tough exterior, but inside wasn't nearly so hard. few people knew that about jesse, and she preferred it that way. though she had to admit. there were times when it just felt good to cry.
she smiled, laughing a little when he winked at her. jude had had her going for a second. it's really ok, she reassured him. jesse didn't know what it must be like for jude, but she could imagine. what he'd just said didn't sound like something she'd want to do. of course, not all jobs were fun and enjoyable, but jesse was the type of person who wouldn't be able to stand doing a job she hated. maybe that was a bad thing, but she couldn't help it. it didn't sound like jude liked his job, or at least, certain aspects of it, so she had to hand it to him for continuing in it. she knew he had been teasing her when he said it, but she had the feeling there might be some truth to it. of course, jesse had the feeling she was right about a lot of things and that wasn't always the case. she didn't like being wrong, about anything, and would seldom admit when she was. that was the stubborn part of her.
jesse drank sometimes, even though she wasn't legal yet, but she'd never got smashed. she'd seen what that did to people and all the trouble it caused and she wanted none of it. it wasn't often that she went to a club or a party, though. in fact, jesse hadn't been to one in a month, if not more. the shop took up nearly all her time and by the end of the day the last thing she felt like doing was partying. she just wanted to sleep or sit at home and relax with a cup of coffee and shakespeare. besides, she never felt like she fit in at parties. jesse wasn't there to get drunk like pretty much every other person there, which meant they usually relied on her to drive them back home. she didn't much like doing that, either, but it was better than someone getting in an accident.
she was glad that jude wanted to continue their conversation. she liked him. not in the way that she had when she was a bit younger, but in the sense that she hoped they'd become good friends. jesse hugged herself in an effort to warm up a little and stop the shivers that were going through her body. her teeth were beginning to chatter and her lips were no doubt starting to turn a little purple by now. she'd definitely stayed in too long. me too, jesse agreed, smiling. she turned to face the beach, noticing it'd gotten even more crowded since they'd been in the water. she wondered how long it'd been. that'd be great, she said enthusiastically. jesse wasn't definitely liking the sounds of that. especially the food part, since she was getting hungry now.
jesse glanced at jude, a smile crossing her face as an idea struck her. how bout a race? not even waiting for his answer she dove under the water and began swimming towards the beach. before too long, though, she had to come up because it was too shallow. but she ran when she did, laughing as she tried to stay ahead of him, unsure exactly where he was. jesse reached the beach, panting, and sat down heavily just outside the reach of the water. she wasn't terribly out of breath because of the shape she was in, but the laughter had made it harder to breathe.

While he looked at Jesse, Jude tried to think about things before. Mack was one of the town staples. Many people were like that. Of course, there were the large families which pretty much pumped money into the town and threw all the events. Then there the ones everyone knew. People from Mack’s generation who went out of their way to welcome new people and keep tabs on everyone’s lives. If something happened-be it good or bad-those were the first people there. He remembered when he first moved that a bunch of them had come to give him food so he didn’t have to cook while he unpacked. That’s the kind of town Hope Harbor was.
And was being the key word. His parent’s generation still did those things but not to the extremes that say his grandparent’s generation did. And his own did it even less. Sure, they’d great someone if they saw them in a store but that was it. Even jude knew he was terrible at it. He was too wrapped in his own bubble of being pissed at the world he didn’t care. Despite his hypocrisy, he didn’t even want to get into the newest generation. Their values and views on the world were completely distorted. Despite all that, there were a few who tried to keep the older generation’s traditions going. There was the Sawyer girl who greeted new people and visited those who needed it. And one of the Tyler kids often did that as well. Occasionally he saw someone else but wasn’t sure who it was. But, with the hypocrisy again, he didn’t. If he had been more like his grandfather, he would have checked on Jesse after the will was taken care of. But no-Jude was too wrapped up in his own little world. And he regretted it though now, perhaps, he could change his ways. Go back to things that previous generations thought was the right thing to do.
With a nod, he was glad she’d join him. ”Great. I tend to pack too much to eat. Another habit-I think I’m packing for work.“ Jude laughed at his own quirks as well as Jesse diving under the water. ”Hey! Unfair!” Jude dove under the water. It felt good to swim like this again, even if it was briefly. Maybe he’d take up swimming and rowing again. He did need a betterh obby then drinking his stress away. Plus, he could row someplace no one could find him and just relax in a boat, nothing disturbing him but perhaps the birds. There was a little cove out on the island that he knew about. He knew his father had no idea about it so it’d be great. He sometimes got a bar out there but mostly, nothing. The island was too far offshore and away from the cell phone tower. Despite using technology a lot for his job, Jude liked having days that he could just disconnect and pretend that it didn’t exist. Of course, once in an area of reception, that thought was quickly gone.
When he resurfaced, he stayed a moment before crawling out. As he collapsed next to Jesse, he rolled to poke at her sides. ”Hey that was unfair of you! I demand a rematch at some point today.” A chuckle left his lips. It felt good to be getting to know someone new. And it also felt good that Alex was caring enough to try to get him out of the house. Even if it wasn’t mention, it was known something was up with Jude. He wasn’t who he once was. The past couple years had really changed him. As he laid sprawled out in the sad he heaved in air. He hadn’t pushed himself like that in a very long time. ”I can’t remember the last time I swam like that. Maybe college.” Pr-aw years to be more like it. Rowing took over more of his college life and then in law school, rowing was the only thing he did. That made his family proud. If Jude actually took time to think over things, everything he did was to make his family happy but he never saw it that way. No, he thought being like his dad would make him happy. Instead, it just made him into a grouch.

AND WHILE YOUR HEAD IS SPINNINGHOLD TIGHT IT'S JUST BEGINNING* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * jesse laughed at his comment. you can never have too much, she told him, winking at him. she wasn't a big eater, though, most of the time. unless she missed a meal because she forgot, or was just too busy to stop and eat. of course, jesse did that quite a bit. too much, her parents would say. though she wished they'd stay out of it because it could get very annoying. her mother was probably the best nagger in the world, and jesse really wasn't sure how her dad had been able to deal with that all the years they'd been married. but she knew why. because he loved her. despite those things, though, she had good parents that loved her like she loved them.
she heard a muffled reply as her head went under, but she couldn't make it out. jesse tried not to laugh as she swam her fastest towards the beach. she had done some swimming in school and was probably an average. no special talent for it, though it wasn't one of her main interests, so that was part of the reason. it was a take it or leave it thing for her. at times like this, however, she really enjoyed. plus, especially living in hope harbor, it was good to know how to swim. the majority of hope harbor's male population were fisherman, so most everyone knew how to. jesse had had no connection with that, however, since that wasn't the kind of job either of her parents were interested in. too dirty. but she had quite a few friends who had family in the business or were in it themselves.
jesse watched jude resurface, noticing how out of breath he was. she was a bit winded herself, but not as much as him. she was grinning as he walked out and collapsed beside her, obviously happy with herself. jesse laughed, shifting to try and dodge the pokes he aimed at her sides. snooze ya lose, she teased, laughing again as she laid back all the way. she squinted as the sun hit her eyes, and raised a hand to shield them. ok, deal. jesse smiled as she turned her head to look at him. i don't think the results will be any different, though. she was teasing him again, of course.
the sun felt amazing after being in the water so long. jesse closed her eyes, feeling the heat penetrating deep into her bones where it was still cold. that's how it felt, anyway. that deep chill you couldn't quite get rid of until you took a nice hot shower. though the sun was certainly doing that job today. jesse opened her eyes to look at him again as he spoke. i imagine you don't have a whole lot of time for it. being a lawyer had to keep you busy, though she didn't know all that it entailed. she sat up on her elbows, no longer shivering and started getting up. i'll go get my things, jesse told him, standing up all the way. she brushed sand off her arms and legs than walked to where she'd left her belongings. she put her hat and sunglasses back on, slipped into her flip flops, than stuffed everything else back in her bag and turned, looking for where jude was. she figured they might as well sit where his things were, and that was fine with her.

IT ONLY SHAMES US MORE and the truths that we all try to hide, are so much clearer when its not our lives, when we don't face the blame. won't you believe, have faith, in this lie with us all. now my body's on the floor and I'm calling out to you. can you hear me now? As he nodded, laughter escaped form between Jude’s lips. Girls with a hearty appetitive as well as a sense of humor were always a plus. He hated bird eaters. You know the types-the ones who picked at their food and ate maybe half of it. Or ate only salads. Yes, he was all for eating healthy but when you let your weight overtake your health then that is another serious issue. ”True. Especially in my case.” He’d need all that food after going through the water trying to catch up with Jesse. He needed this-someone to challenge him. Even though this was a small way, and she didn’t know it, it was helpful. Those beers in his cooler may go untouched. He had planned to have maybe one or two then relax before heading back. With distractions, Jude didn’t touch anything like that.
While he laid in the sand, his eyes stayed closed. ”You’d be surprised. I did the swim team all the way through college.” Back then he was amazing. When he cut through the water he could drown out everything else. All that mattered was getting from one end of the pool and back, maybe doing another loop around if that was required. Those were simpler days. When she mentioned him not having time for his old past time, Jude nodded. ”No, not really.“ No, lately he hardly had time for anything he once enjoyed. It was a pity really. Back only a few years ago he used to swim almost daily, even if it was only for ten or fifteen minutes. Perhaps he needed to get back to that point in his life. Then he was happier. Even when there was something stressful in his life, he just took a dip to clear his mind and came out better then before. Swimming might help him figure out how to handle this new situation in his life. It was making him depressed and that wasn’t a Jude anyone liked because he turned it into anger and frustration. The way he challenged his frustrations now was unhealthy. Jude was now out of shape and preferred to sleep over anything else. He needed to get back to the place he once was.
”Alright my things aren’t far from here.” As they each got up, Jud tried to get as much sand off him as possible. This was...new. Honestly, Jude wasn’t used to having an encounter like this. One where him and a girl were just talking and hanging out, no flirting. Sure, it happened but since he hadn’t socialized in awhile it was new. And the socializing he had done was to just to hook up with someone. Hence, he wasn’t used to this. Once at his things, he shook some more of the sand off before he sat on his towel which was spread across the sand. He opened the cooler ot grab a drink. When he went other, he had swallowed some of the salt water and he wanted that awful taste out of his mouth.
When he saw Jesse headed back this way he waved his free hand, the left one clutching the can of Pepsi as he pounded it down. Once she was within ear shot he stopped drinking and released some air. Not a burp just something to hopefully help prevent one. ”I’ve got some chips, some egg salad, uh regular sliced ham and plenty of bread. Wasn‘t sure what kind of sandwich I‘d want so I packed plenty of each.” The cooler he had was lined on the outside with gel pads as well as the inside, allowing his food to stay cold longer. Still, with the sun overhead the food should probably be eaten soon. Jude pulled the food out and set it across the lid of the cooler to avoid sand getting over the containers. ”So did we go to school together or did you move here? I just can’t remember and that’s one thing I kind of hate.”

AND WHILE YOUR HEAD IS SPINNINGHOLD TIGHT IT'S JUST BEGINNING* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * jesse grinned at jude when he laughed. she really liked his laugh, and his smile. of course, she liked most peoples smiles, because that's just how she was. almost always happy, and she didn't like it when other people weren't happy, too. to some, she was one of those people who was overly happy. but in her opinion, that was impossible. yeah, i can tell, jesse said, feigning seriousness as she made a crack about his weight. of course, jude looked pretty fit to her, so she was only kidding him. that was the nice thing about her. she could joke around with a perfect stranger, and she didn't feel weird doing it, either. she was getting pretty hungry herself, after having raced jude.
she was a bit surprised when he informed her about swimming all through college. really? jesse hadn't been able to see his form in the water, since he'd been behind her the whole time, though if she had, she no doubt would have known. her form was ok, she supposed. well, she wasn't really sure where she rated on that score, though she wasn't all that concerned about it. jesse's biggest reason for learning to swim was so she wouldn't have to worry about drowning. after all, this was maine. thus, lots of water. it had been something her parents wanted her to do, too. you should make time for it, she told him. it was obviously something he enjoyed and missed, though she knew it could be easier said than done. jesse sometimes had the habit of giving advice to people who didn't ask for it, or even people she hardly knew. sometimes they were grateful for it, other times they just got mad at her because they didn't want her in their business. but she was only trying to help.
jesse slipped her swim cover back on before picking everything up. she was still a little chilled, so it would help some. she liked meeting new people, especially when they hit it off, like her and jude. it was nice to have a guy friend where she didn't have to worry about flirting. jesse liked it, of course, but not with every guy she met, and she wasn't a big time flirter. she liked to call it friendly flirting. of course, she joked around with pretty much everyone. there were some people she had more serious relationships with, however. her parents, for one. and her sister. though jesse had some good laughs with her. there were her employees, too. they could be friends, sure. but they also had to respect her as their boss, so things could get pretty tense, especially since they were all older than her.
she glanced around the overcrowded beach, lo0king for jude, then waved back when she saw him. jesse started heading in that direction, but soon stopped to remove her flip flops, finding it too difficult to walk through the sand in them. she soon reached him, though, dropping her bag next to his. she laughed as he listed the things he'd brought along. wow, i guess you weren't kidding. jesse had brought some snacks herself, but hardly real food. she pulled her towel out and laid it down before sitting on it. she then pulled out a water bottle, a box of granola bars, a bag of pretzels and a package of chips ahoy cookies. they were her favorite. completely unhealthy, but way too good to pass up. jesse took a sip from her water bottle, then placed her snacks by his food so he'd know he could help himself.
jesse began making a sandwich, glancing up when he started talking to her. born and raised here, but i was still in middle school when you graduated high school, so it's not surprising, she told him with a laugh. the only reason she'd known who he was was because his family.
