They had agreed on a casual date. The forecast for that weekend wasn’t a good forecast - rain rain rain, and then more rain. With scattered thunderstorms. Still, Sydni and Jude didn’t let that ruin their first actual date. Due to a family event of Sydni’s, the first weekend after they had reconnected wasn’t a good weekend. So, they spent the rest of the first week, weekend, and that week texting each other and sending emails.. The more she talked to Jude, the more she could feel herself falling for him. She literally got butterflies each and every time she thought of him - or when he called her - or when a text appeared on her phone and it was him - or when an email was in her inbox from him. He was a really sweet guy - and despite Sydni’s past with sweet talkers - she fell for it. All of it. She was as excited as a kid going into a candy store for the first time when that day got there. He had some things he had needed to do first before coming over - so he was to be there by three in the afternoon at the latest.
Can we say she was jumping out of her skin?
She could have dressed in her pajamas if she had wanted to - which really didn’t sound like a bad idea to her - but considering this was their first date, she put some shorts on along with a tank top. She had covered the movies, getting movies he had requested as well as movies she had wanted to watch - he was to pick up the Chinese food. Her house smelled very nicely - like sweet pea - which was natural for her house, since she grew tons of flowers in her back yard. She wanted to make sure the place was perfect for their casual at home date. She had the blanket ready incase all went well and they were to snuggle, and the movies lined up so they could decide - together - which movie to watch first. If things were to go well - she decided if he was still when it was close to dinner time, she’d offer to cook them dinner.
As she was anticipating his arrival, she heard the door bell ring. I told him to call before he got here, so he didn’t have to stand in the rain! A little piece of her panicked, but she kept her cool. She moved to the front door, removed the chain and unlocked the two deadbolts and the door handle, and then she opened the door. A smile instantly appeared and brightened her face.
“I thought I told you to call me before you got here? I hope the drive over here wasn’t too bad - come in!”

Jude was not having a good day. He had been planning this date with Sydni for two weeks. Two weeks. Then all of a sudden his father wanted him to run some files someplace. He tried telling him he really couldn’t do it because he had plans but that didn’t matter. After arguing Jude finally decided to just do what his father wanted. After sending a text to Sydni, he went to the office to get the files and run them to the city hall. Why they needed these on a Saturday were beyond him. Especially with this weather. He hated to drive in the rain. And the snow. For being a New Englander, he should be an expert in driving in bad weather. And he drove well enough but that didn’t mean he liked it any more.
After he made polite small talk, he was back in his car. Jude texted her to see what she wanted from the Chinese place. After he had her order, he called it in ahead of time so it’d be ready to pick up. Before then, he stopped to get some wine for them to have with something sweet. While at the shop, he also grabbed a cheesecake tester for them to have. A smile came across his face. While texting they had this silly game of twenty questions they continuously played. In between talking about their days, they’d ask each other random questions, each responding. It was fun-felt like they were teenagers. What made it better was that Jude didn’t really drink too much while they talked. That was a step in the positive direction. It had a slice of several different cheesecakes to try. He figured they could have fun trying each one together as they talked. It’s not like he had to be at the office later so Jude could actually enjoy time with Sydni.
After picking up the food, he had to shake himself off because he was soaked. He was an idiot for leaving his umbrella at home. Actually, he wasn’t sure if he even had an umbrella anymore. While at a stop sign, Jude made a note in his phone to check that. Jude was so forgetful at times that he jotted just about everything down. After he switched it to silent so no one else could bug him while he was out. Jude had told his father he’d be unavailable all day but that had never stopped him in the past. As he pulled up to Sydni’s house, he grabbed the food and bolted for the door. Was it just him or was the rain coming down harder then before?
While he gripped the food, he used his elbow to ring the bell. the cheesecake was balanced on one are while the brown bags from the Chinese place were in the other. Finally his hand was clasped around the wine. It must have been a sight when Sydni opened the door-a sopping wet Jude holding a grease stained bag, not even chilled wine and cheesecake that was now fogged up. ”I know I know but in all fairness you shouldn’t text and drive. And I was already here so I figured it was pointless to text.” Just put on one of his winning grins and chuckled. ”Now can I come in or did you want to eat out here? As fun as a picnic in the rain sounds, I think the dessert might get a little ruined.

Of course, he looked gorgeous in his suits too. She shook her head. “Fine, you are right, but you could have called. Mmm, that food smells good. Come in, make yourself at home. After we eat, is it okay for me to let Kona out? Apparently, she has a thing against storms and I don’t want her feeling like I’ve abandoned her..” Sydni had recently made a trip down to the pet adoption shelter – and she was now the proud owner of a full blooded black lab puppy. Kona was a sweetheart already – she slept through the night and was a great cuddle partner. Even though she was only twelve weeks old, Kona was very smart. She could shake Sydni’s hand and she knew when Sydni was having one of her moments.
This day couldn’t have come sooner. With their busy schedules and things happening at Jude’s law firm, they had obviously had to put this day off. Sydni honestly hated that they had to wait two weeks for this. Two weeks. But, at least this meant he was interested – after all, he was here. Despite having to wait two weeks – Sydni was interested. The more she talked to Jude, the more she fell for him. The more she fell for him, the more she was scared (in a good way). It had been a while since she had let another man into her life – let alone her home. After her last relationship, Sydni just.. didn’t have it in her to take a chance.
Until now.
Obviously, she was taking a chance on Jude. She didn’t know why – maybe because of the fact that they’d grown up together – maybe. Or it could have been the fact that he was so gorgeous – charming – and he had this way of making her smile and laugh so easily. Most people at Sydni’s job thought she was a cold hearted b*tch sixty five percent of the time – the other thirty five percent of the time – they knew she was laid back. She kept to herself mostly, but she did have this soft side to her. Puppies and Children were an easy way for someone to see that soft spot. Sydni volunteered at the after school program a lot – helping kids with their homework and tutoring them. Truth be told, she yearned to be a mother – but until she found the right guy or completely gave up on the idea of marriage – that wouldn’t happen. Nope, not for a very long time. Sydni didn’t see herself giving up on the idea of marriage any time soon – but she did know that her clock was ticking.
Her step mother reminded her of that every single day. The fact that her cousin – who was younger than her and also a drug addict – had just given birth to a beautiful son, ate at Sydni every day since she had heard the news. Yeah, things like that bothered Sydni completely. The fact that people who weren’t ready – people who weren’t prepared – people who just weren’t meant to be parents could become parents..
Yet she made herself wait for the perfect guy.
She was financially stable – trust fund from her mother’s father and her step mother’s father – not to mention her actual savings from her job.. Yeah, she was financially stable. If she wanted to, she could get artificially inseminated. However – she wanted her children to have a father in their lives. Yeah, that’s what Sydni wanted.
“How did the thing for your father go? Oh, and I’ve got plenty of movie choices laid out for us – I decided to let you choose which one we watch first – chick flick or action movie.” Sydni flashed him a smile as she took the food off his hands and went to the kitchen to put it on the counter.

Jude chuckled as he followed Sydni into her house. ”Wow already you are so demanding and this date has barely even begun. Maybe I should just leave?” The two had always been this way growing up-bantering back and forth playfully. That hadn’t changed even has they each went off to school and dealt with their own things. Of course, they had grown a bit apart. Jude had left Maine for school because he wanted a better law education then the one he could get here. Not that the schools weren’t decent but he just preferred going someplace that had a wider range of resources. The professors there had worked in law for so many years that they had seen most every case out there. Their knowledge was vast and Jude was glad ot have been able to work with them.
As he used his one foot to help slip one shoe off Jude shrugged, struggling to balance the food until Sydni came over. ”You can let her out now if you want. Unless she has a tendency to eat foods she shouldn’t and you’re worried.” Since Sydni had taken the food, he could loosen the laces to slip his shoes much mor easily. After his jacket came off and was put on a hook near the door. Unfortunately his jacket didn’t have a hood and he didn’t want to soak the one on his shirt so his hair was soaked. The bits of his bangs clung to his forehead as he wiped at his locks, trying to stop the water droplets from flying everywhere. Still some slid down his neck wich, really, he couldn’t do much to stop. Avoiding the small wet spot from where he had been standing before, Jude moved towards the kitchen where Sydni now was.
Standing next to her, he leaned his back against the counter as he did a sweep over Sydni. When they were younger he hadn’t looked at her this way-romantically that is. Actually, he hardly ever looked at any woman that way. Usually it was a one and done deal. There were a few girlfriends in his past but they never panned out. Now he was looking for something that would. Everyone else in his life-with the exception of Alex, really-was settling down. That made him really think about what he wanted. Thinking about the qualities he wanted in a girl. Independent both financially and emotionally(he hated clingy girls), driven, and caring; not just about her friends and family but in general. He knew Sydni did volunteer work and he liked that. And she had no issues standing up to him or anyone else. On more then one occasion he had seen her butt heads with someone before a press conference or whatever she was doing. Sydni fit into everything he wanted fairly well just he hadn’t noticed it until they had started to talk again. Shame on him really for not realizing it sooner. Maybe then he could have been happy a long while ago.
Still, he was cautious only because he knew he had a shaky past. Not that everyone knew about his past that is. His drinking had actually gotten him in a tight spot a little over a week ago. Some girl in a bar had hit on him and after he was very much drunk, things got a little handsy. Still, before Jude and Isabella got too far he ended things. Despite not technically being with Sydni yet, he wanted to see where this was going. He was debating on when and if he was going to tell her. Part of him really thought he should keep it in but Sydni had told him about all the other guys that had hurt her. They lied, kept secrets and cheated on her. Jude didn’t want to be that guy. He’d see how this date went then at the end, tell her. Let her make the decision if she wanted things to continue or not. He hoped they had and knew it was the man he was trying to no longer be. That may not be enough and if it wasn’t then so be it. That’s just how life worked sometimes
”Ok really? You’re asking me if I want action or chick flick first? That’s like setting me into a trap to start with. Uh-uh not falling for it. I got the food and braved the rain to bring it here. You throw something in.” He started to pull things out of the bag as a scowl formed on his face. ”Fine I guess. Got the papers delivered and Fredric wanted to chat. He doesn’t seem to get I don’t get many Saturdays off so doing this “one thing” was more of a bother. But it’s done and I don’t want to think about work right now.” Thinking about work made him realize how awful his choice had been. If he could go back and choose a different career he would but his father had paid off his loans when Jude came to work at the firm. He really couldn’t change careers now.
”How goes planning the tree lighting and this New Year’s bash Daniel is throwing? Oh which reminds um don’t send an invitation for the New Year’s thing to Alex Scott just yet. Him and Daniel aren‘t on great terms so you might get a nasty phone call.” That thought popped into his head last minute and Jude figured it was best to get it out now. Considering this thing was a fundraiser for the school that meant the town hall was involved to make sure things were handled properly. And that meant Sydni was up there with coordinating things.

Maybe I should just leave?” Sydni couldn’t help but smirk and shake her head. Teasing, was he? Yes, Sydni and he had been like this all their lives. Teasing each other. She moved from the bags she had placed on the counter and went into the laundry room. She picked up a towel for him so he would be able to dry off somewhat and not catch a cold.
“Here, take this. Dry off some – we don’t want you catching a cold, do we?” She smiled. Even if he was a little wet – he was still gorgeous. Truth be told, she had thought for a very long time that he was gorgeous. She’d had a bit of a crush on him when she was younger – but their friendship had been too important for her to ever admit it to him.
“Ok really? You’re asking me if I want action or chick flick first? That’s like setting me into a trap to start with. Uh-uh not falling for it. I got the food and braved the rain to bring it here. You throw something in.” She laughed with amusement, and that’s when she shook her head as she made her way down the hall, past the staircase. She made her way down the hall and went to the third room on the left hand side, at the end of the hallway. She went into the room and smiled when she saw Kona on her puppy bed. “C’mon you. We don’t want you being anti-social now, do we? C’mon sweetheart.” It didn’t take long for the pup to awaken and to playfully skip out of Sydni’s bedroom. She followed Sydni, right beside her, into the kitchen again where Jude was.
Sydni listened to him talk about the papers, and she still felt horribly that he had to go in for a little bit today – but, the point was.. he was there now. Sydni thought she’d be incredibly nervous once he got there – but apparently, she wasn’t. It felt.. natural. Yes, natural. It felt natural having Jude in her home. And then.. he mentioned the Christmas tree lighting and the New Year’s Eve Charity Ball. Of course, being head of Public Relations for Hope Harbor, Sydni was in charge of any and all public events. She had started working on both events time the Founders Fair had ended.
“Planning is going good, and the Christmas Tree Lighting should go as well as it did last year – as long as we can get a decent sober Santa. I’ve still got to get with Daniel about some things for the New Year’s eve Charity Ball. And.. thank you for that tip about Alex.. I’ve seen him in some of his horrible moods and I prefer to avoid them if I can.” Sydni could be a hot head when needed. Oh boy, she loved it when she had to go to press conferences and a reporter decided to get out of hand with her. Everyone had seen Sydni when it came to things like that. Just like that one time a few months ago where a reporter said some extremely untruthful things about Hope Harbor at a press conference with the Governor. Oh, that didn’t go too well. Nope. Sydni made sure he and all the other reporters there knew the truth about Hope Harbor. While it was a small town, it was the cleanest, eco-friendly, energy saving, less wasteful, most close knitted town in Maine. It aggravated Sydni to death when certain people from the bigger cities – such as Portland – had the nerve to say anything negative about her home. Of course, she enjoyed the satisfaction of seeing the look on their faces when she shoved each point, backed by facts, into their throats verbally.
Sydni began to run her fingers through her hair – and it was then that she realized she was still wearing sunglasses on her head. That was Sydni’s thing though – she was so comfortable with sunglasses even if it wasn’t sunny they were on top of her head. She took them off and placed them nearby on the kitchen counter.
“So, do you need a fork for your food? Or do you prefer chopsticks?” She smiled looking at him. Goodness… those eyes.. that hair.. that smile.. that body… One could only imagine the things going through Sydni’s mind each time she looked at him. He was a sweetheart when he wanted to be, and he was stable. He could live off his family’s money all of his life if he chose to – but he chose to make a life for himself and not live off of his family’s money. Sydni respected that about him.
“I’m glad today finally got here.. Not that I mean to be too bold or too forward, but I was starting to jump out of my skin.”

One thing that was great about this town is how almost everyone knew everyone else. It was fantastic. Jude didn’t have to pretend so much. He also got reminded of the man he once was. One day he wanted to find his way back to how he was before his life went downhill. And what took that happening were people who could support him in his journey back to the person he wanted to be. Despite not telling Sydni anything yet, she was already helping him more then he thought was possible. Even his own father didn’t care this much which was pathetic. Not that it was bad that Sydni was indirectly helping him but weren’t parents supposed to help their kids? Weren’t they supposed to know when something was wrong with their kid and do what they could to help out?
His hand gripped around the towel before he rubbed at his hair. ”I don’t know. I think this is all some crazy plot to get me to stay longer. I know you women-you read the Fifty Shades crap and get weird ideas.” No, he wasn’t suggesting they jump right in the sack. Well, if she wanted it he wouldn’t protest but he wasn’t going to be the one to push it. As she left the room he gave another sweep over the looked at the floor while he wiped at the back of his neck. Maybe it’s because he was always so wrapped up in other things at school but he hadn’t noticed her before now. Not just her body either but Sydni in general. Jude felt real bad about that. Wile he thought about it, he heard the dog puttering around his feet. He set the towel on an empty space of counter before he knelt down, allowing Kona to sniff his hand. ”Hey there girl.” He rubbed behind her ears, down her neck and slightly down her side.
There were moments these past two weeks that Jude wondered how they could make things work. The two of them had some pretty crazy careers. His had him in and out of the courtroom and sometimes clients that had them on retainer called them at all hours. If this work, they’d have to work hard but Jude could do it. He was at a time and place in his life where he wanted to settle down. Sydni was the type of girl guys settled down with. It just boiled down to if they meshed well together. He wouldn’t to conclusions until they had some time together.
Jude laughed as he shook his head. ”Well maybe my dad could play it. Or ask Daniel’s grandfather. Though if you do that Daniel might show up and if Alex goes another fiasco.” Jude shook his head. This whole situation was complicated. As they unloaded the food, he popped a piece of honey chicken in his mouth. ”Well, we can try but with the holiday events in town it might be unavoidable. Apparently Alex caught his sister in the shower. With Daniel.” Jude wasn’t one for girly gossip but for the sake of the town, Alex and Daniel had to stay far apart until things were resolved. Jude had gotten a hold of some Jordan guy Daniel was friends with just so Jude knew Daniel was watched sort of. Though, really, Jude just had to stalk Leila’s Facebook page and FourSquare profile to know where they all were. Good thing that girl’s phone automatically checked her in at places. ”Like seriously it’s creepy. We all watched Leila grew up. I remembered her when she was born. Daniel moved here when she was eight. I mean how does that happen? I look at her and I still see that toothless kid wanting to play basketball with her big brother and I.” Yes, Jude was overprotective of Leila. He had no siblings so his friend’s siblings sort of became his own.
Out of the corner of his eye, he watched her take her sunglasses off. ”I was wondering why you had them on. Then again, you women and your styles confuse me. Jeans, t-shirts, button down tops, suits, sneakers, dress shoes and socks in just plain colors. That’s all a guy needs to be stylish and happy.” Jude could do small talk all day long-it was part of his job. As he started to put food on his plate, he thought over her question. ”Eh, chopsticks for the big stuff and a spoon for everything else.” Jude licked at his thumb as he glanced at Kona. She was too cute. He wanted a dog but with his job it was impossible to have one.
Jude looked at her and nodded, a knowing smile on his lips. ”It’s not too bold. I have too. Just...there are complications in my life so I’ve been a bit worried too.” He knew it might be kind of heavy to tell her about his things but he also wanted her to know that she had been helping him change. Jude wanted to do this different then other relationships in the past. Before he didn’t talk about himself at all-kept everything a secret. That was a fault many girls had told him about when they broke up. Jude wanted to be different and be an open book. They had already gone through most of the frivolous things and some semi-heavy stuff such as family going ons. This wouldn’t be too big of a leap, right?

“I don’t know. I think this is all some crazy plot to get me to stay longer. I know you women-you read the Fifty Shades crap and get weird ideas.” Sydni couldn’t help but smirk. No, she hadn’t read the fifty shades of grey – that just wasn’t something she would consider reading. Honestly, in her mind, the fifty shades series were crap. Crap crap crap. “Jude, if I really really wanted to get you to say longer later on – believe me, I can. She winked at him and smiled sweetly. As he continued, she kept going through his suggestions for santa through her head. Some of them sounded good, some of them didn’t. She’d take them into consideration though – and she made a mental note of it to contact certain ones about playing santa. Yeah, she made mental notes a lot – mental lists, actually.
When he divulged further what was going on between Alex and Daniel – she couldn’t help but wince. She felt for Alex of course – Who really wanted to catch their baby sister in bed with their best friend? Sydni would probably murder someone right then and there – and she knew Alex enough to know that Daniel was one lucky man for him to still be living after that. She turned around in the kitchen, going over to the silverware drawer. She pulled out a spoon for Jude – as she’d eat most of hers with chopsticks she didn’t need a spoon. When she turned back around, he was returning her comment about her jumping out of her skin..
“It’s not too bold. I have too. Just...there are complications in my life so I’ve been a bit worried too.”
Oh. My. God. She smiled even bigger – knowing he’d wanted this day to get there soon as well. She couldn’t help but smile. Then it was him saying he was a bit worried too..
”What are you worried about hon? If it’s me – I’m not going to bite you or destroy your life. And this is probably bolder than the first comment I made – but I’m just going to be upfront and honest with you about everything – as you should already know. Anyways, I’m not going to… hurt you. I don’t cheat, I’m faithful, and I don’t hide things. I just don’t. If this thing was to turn into a relationship – you don’t have to worry about anything of that sort.” Bold. Yes. A lie? No. She kept her heart closed off until someone proved they were worth her time – which is what he’d have to do eventually.. ish. Right after she finished talking, as she began eating her shrimp fried rice and rotating between the rice and her beef egg foo young, a loud pop of thunder could be heard – and that’s when it happened.
The lights flickered. Another loud boom of thunder could be heard. Then, the lights went out completely.
Sydni could have panicked – she could have.. but, she was more optimistic than most people.
“Well, since the weather has decided to change our plans…” |
She paused for a moment as she shifted through the kitchen going to the kitchen drawer with two flashlights. She cut them both on and handed one to Jude “Do you want to light the fire place and I’ll get all of the candles out?” Well.. thanks mother nature.. Jude grinned as he shook his head. Yes, she was very about being out there. Jude had always liked that about her. It made her great at her job as well. Someone in public relations really couldn’t be mousy and behind the scenes after all. Same with lawyers-it’s one of the many reasons he had became one. He loved getting in people’s faces and duking it out. The court room was an amazing place for someone with someone to prove. And who liked to get caught up things to begin with. Yes, Jude lived for being in the court room. Somehow, he got a sense of calm when in it.
When she brought the spoon he grabbed it before hitting it gently against his hand. He had never gotten used to chop sticks despite people trying to show him how to. Tapping the spoon also allowed him to gather his thoughts. He drew in a very deep breath before he exhaled. He took a few bites of his food before he spoke, drawing out his words carefully. ”It’s just stressful, dealing with everything at work and something my dad wants me to keep secret.” He pressed his lips together, unsure of how much she knew about what happened despite her father being involved. ”Something I want no part of. And I don’t cope in the best ways possible.” Jude wrestled internally with whether to tell her what had happened with that Isabella girl or not. With how she was talking, it was probably best if he did. He didn’t want to dive into a relationship with this type of secret. Jude wasn’t that guy. Sure, he had messed around with some girls in the past, but never two at once. Nor did he keep secrets like this.
Jude rubbed at his eyes as he tried to figure out the best way to word this. ”The way I cope led me to almost do something I’m not proud of. We hadn’t been talking long and this girl I met at a bar kept buying me drinks. She gave me a ride home and kissed me. I kissed back but stopped it as I was at least sober enough for that. I didn‘t want it to go further.” Jude set his spoon done as he gripped at the counter. He hoped this didn’t ruin things too much. Honestly, they weren’t really a couple yet but he still felt bad about things because he wanted to see where things went. And with how much their texts have increased this past week, he really liked where it was headed.
When the power went out he sighed. A glance outside showed him he wasn’t leaving anytime soon. Hopefully Sydni wasn’t angry about his little confession. He nodded at her suggestion before he grabbed an aim-a-flame and went over to the fireplace. He grabbed a couple of the logs that were stacked next to it and threw them inside. After he arranged them, he grabbed some newspaper he found and lit the end of it before tossing it in the fire. Jude grabbed the poker and moved the logs to stoke the fire before he got up. He grabbed their food and brought it to the living room area. He wasn’t sure how long the power would be out so maybe it would be best if they stayed in the same room. That is if she was alright with him there after what he told her. Jude ran a hand through his hair before he grabbed the bit on the back of his neck.
This was not how he expected today to go.

Sydni grabbed all of the candles she had and placed them in various places from the dining room table to the living room. Though, this wasn’t how she had wanted the night to go – the fireplace lit with the lights off did make it a bit more of a romantic setting. She listened to Jude talk about the way he coped with certain issues with his dad and the secret. She could understand that – she more than anyone knew of coping and how people dealt with things. Her? She dealt with things her own way. If the secret he was talking about was the same one she kept.. she did deal with it a different way. She chose to block things out, of course.. when it came to protecting the secret and certain events arising to where she had to do some things to keep it protected and hidden from the world, she unblocked it. When she unblocked it, she normally had breakdowns. Breakdowns weren’t good in her case. It took her a while to recover from them. It wasn’t that Sydni was depressed – but when she had to unblock the secret and everything from the secret – insomnia set in. Thoughts set in. Feelings set in. Everything she’d worked so hard for the past fifteen years to keep away came back. And lord knew how she tried so hard to keep it all locked away. Yes, there were a few occasions where it caught up with her. She hated it – oh, how she hated it. She didn’t want anything to do with it – and she wished she was like several other people in the town, who had been there all their lives, that knew nothing of the secret. Ignorance was bliss in this case – ignorance and not knowing was so much better than knowing the truth. She wanted to say something about the secret – but instead, she kept it to herself. She didn’t want to bring it up tonight – no, not tonight. That would be a later occasion, but not this night. Instead, she bit her lip for a minute, and listened to him talk about a mistake he recently made. Of course, she didn’t like it. And even though they weren’t technically together, she felt something stab her heart. Did she really care about Jude this much already? Again? To where she couldn’t stand the thought of him kissing someone else other than her? To where she couldn’t stand the thought of him being with someone other than herself? Apparently so.. because time she started thinking about it all – she felt sick. But she let it go. Instead of her fighting with him and throwing a big fit about it, she let it go. He was not technically hers yet – and if anyone knew as much as she did.. they’d know it was a good thing he was admitting it to her. He showed remorse – and she knew him – if he didn’t regret it, he wouldn’t have brought it up. As she took her place beside him, she looked at him as she put her hand on top of his. “Jude, I’m happy you told me about it – though you didn’t have to since we are not technically boyfriend and girlfriend.. I’m not going to lie to you; I hate the thought of it. The – well, the thought of you kissing another girl other than me... and if I knew who she was I’d probably want to scratch her eyes out right now or something... But I know from first hand: If you regret it, you’re going to admit it upfront, no questions asked. If you don’t regret it, you’re going to keep doing it and wait until I find out about it. Not that you did anything wrong – I just hate picturing you doing that with another girl…”

Jude put his head against his fist while he waited for Sydni to come back. Kona came over and set her head in his lap. Jude ran his hand over the dogs head ideally until Sydni came back. He braced himself for a fight. That’s all he was used to with his parents when growing up was fighting. He didn’t know what the fights were about all the time but they carried through the house. He vowed whenever he settled down he wouldn’t live like that-at each other’s throats. No lies, infidelity and constant fights. Jude didn’t want that life. It wasn’t one worth living.
When she sat down, Jude leaned forward and set his elbows on his knees. His hands clasped as he hung his head for a moment. An awkward chuckle left his lips. ”Well, I don’t know if she’s still in town. I haven’t seen her that night.” He looked ahead at the fire as he clicked his teeth together a couple times. ”I know I didn’t have to but still. I don’t know this girl so I don’t know what she’d say if you ran into her. I just don’t want to be like my parents and start a relationship on rocky grounds and secrets.” He pressed his lips together, pretty much putting it out there that he wanted a relationship. When he had decided that he wasn’t entirely sure. Last night? Three days ago? When he stopped things from progressing with Isabella? Jude wasn’t sure when but he wanted to try.
He turned his body towards Sydni so he could focus on her. Jude‘s left hand went up to cup her cheek and rub his thumb along it. ”I know I can’ wipe away what I did with her, but if it makes you feel any better I won’t kiss any other girl but you.” He took a breath in before he leaned forward and moved in to let his lips meet hers. Their first kiss not even an hour into their first date. Very bold of Jude. Then again, he was never one with subtleties when he went after what he wanted. Hence him being a lawyer.

Sydni felt the warmth of his hand on her face, and then all of a sudden… “I know I can’t wipe away what I did with her, but if it makes you feel any better I won’t kiss any other girl but you.” The words flew in her head – and before she could even respond, he kissed her. He kissed her. He. Kissed. Her. She melted into the kiss, kissing him back just as he’d kissed her. After a few seconds went by, the kiss was broken. She couldn’t help but smile – she really couldn’t. He said he wouldn’t kiss any other girl other than her. Oh, how she just wanted to jump up and down, and she was on the inside – but she kept herself a little bit more calm than that.
His lips were like the wine she treated herself to every now and then. They were intoxicating. The kiss left her wanting more – and more – and more. She had a smile on her face, and as the kiss broke, she leaned into him, putting her head on his shoulder. “ Well, in that case…I won’t kiss any guy that’s not you.” She wanted to be with him. They were – in a sense – perfect for each other. Yes, they had hectic work schedules – both of them – but they could work around it. It wouldn’t be easy – no.. it’d probably be hard.. but Sydni was one determined person when she got her heart and mind set on something. And as of that moment? As of that moment in Wish two weeks ago?
Her heart and mind were set on one person, and one person only.
Jude.

Jude leaned into the kiss, not pushing the bounds too far. He didn’t want to rush this as he had already messed things up enough. He was glad he hadn’t seen Isabella since that night. Now he just wanted to focus on this budding relationship. When she pulled away he put on one of his grins that traveled up to his eyes while they held eye contact. Yeah, that was a pretty perfect first kiss. It being under better circumstances would be nice though. Not as a result of him royally messing up. Hopefully that didn’t happen again.
When she put her head on his shoulder he moved his arm around hers and pulled her closer. He breathed in the scent of her shampoo as he pressed his face to the top of her head. His lips moved against her hair just slightly as he chuckled and spoke up. ”Well that’s good to know.” Jude’s thumb rubbed along her shoulder as he moved from looking at her and the fire. It was starting to warm up in here which was good because the storm seemed to be getting worse. He had a feeling he’d be stuck here for the night. Not like it’d be that bad. ”So, since movies are out of the question what do you want to do? I am terrible with coming up with ideas so just tell me what you want.” Jude was pretty boring. If he had thought of the date they’d just be going to someplace in town the maybe a movie theater. His own apartment was fairly unoriginal. He had the basic furniture, a clock on the wall and that was it. There were some photos but not many as his family wasn’t huge on pictures. Otherwise the most exciting thing to “decorate” his place were electronics.
