Sydni Grace McLaughlin. She was daughter of Connor McLaughlin – Hope Harbor Headmaster as well as Hope Harbor Police Chief. She was Head of Public Relations – and she was a very determined woman. When she wanted something – she got it. When she believed in something – she fought for it, with a passion. She was a woman with a fashion sense, and though she may have had money – not just from her family, but by her own job – she didn’t look down on anyone. She had a strong relationship with God – and she was a damned good friend. She made sure that her life stayed in order – everything from her house, to her family, her relationships, her job – everything. If one tiny thing went out of place – it bugged the crap out of her. This, my good friends, is what we call obsessive compulsive disorder – and Sydni had it bad. Maybe it was something she gained over the years from her depression – from the miscarriage six years ago, or perhaps when she lost her mom. Either way – if one little thing was out of place – whether it be a pen or a hair or life not going the way she planned – she freaked out. Yet, she knew she couldn’t control everything – she was NOT in control of everything – but she damned herself by trying to keep everything in place.
She’d just left the hospital. No, she had no broken bones, bruised collar bones, organs failing, and she wasn’t sick – not really. No. She was pregnant. P.R.E.G.A.N.T. More like, f.u.c.k.e.d., in a sense. She had been dating Jude for only three months – THREE MONTHS – and here she was, seven and a half weeks pregnant. She wanted a drink. She wanted a Xanax. She wanted someone to just hold her and let her fall completely apart for once. But who to turn to? Granted, Cameron had been there for her in the hospital – recommending an OBGYN who was two towns away until she was ready to tell people. Would she tell people? That all depended. She didn’t know Jude’s reaction – she really didn’t want to hear Jude’s reaction at this point. She wanted her sisters – at least one of them. For the first time in a long time – Sydni was starting to unravel – she was starting to fall apart. She felt like she couldn’t breathe and she was, well, quite frankly – unable to control anything. She had been so careful – so very careful. She’d taken her birth control on time, and truth be told – she and Jude had only made love a total of four times in three months. Four times – and she was pregnant.
No matter how much she thought it – she couldn’t get that word out of her head. Pregnant. From the clear reading on the pregnancy test window to the ultrasound and hearing the heartbeat of the baby growing inside of her – she couldn’t get it out of her head. She felt her body clamming up – she was sweating and thankful she wasn’t wearing makeup. She made her way through downtown Hope Harbor in her car, headed for one of the two people she could trust with anything in this world. Brooklyn. Brooklyn knew everything there was to know about Sydni – yet she passed no judgement. Sydni felt safe with her – and so comfortable knowing she had her shoulder when it was needed – and vice versa. It was after six o’clock – closing time for Once Upon A Dream – but Sydni had texted Brooklyn telling her she’d meet her there after the shop closed.
Pulling into the back, she sat in her car for a second. Of course, Cameron had given her the ultrasounds. How could she go from feeling like everything was in its proper place to everything just – being not? She sat back in the driver seat, after she cut the ignition off. She couldn’t believe this was all happening. She just couldn’t process it through her mind.
She felt the tears rolling down her face, when she did as she usually did – she took three deep breaths and wiped the tears away. She pushed the lump in her throat down and walked into the shop from the back way. She forced a smile on her face.
“Brook? I’m here. ”
