Cameron should be spending his day off with Kylie. They had a tense Christmas with her family and with that over they ahd to get ready for this Charity Ball thing. Normally he wouldn’t go but Haven had been invited and Kylie seemed to excited to help her sister design a special gown for her he decided to take her. That gave something else for the girls to bond over-getting ready for this Charity Ball that is. Brooklyn was holding a couple tuxes for him to try on but they’d get to that another day. No, today he was doing a favor for said Brooklyn in exchange for having a free tux rental(since he couldn’t exactly drop $200 for one this short of notice). His task was to try to convince some frined of hers to practice medicine again.
Cameron sat at the Eagle Pointe Coffee House with his jacket draped over the back of his chair. He had a cup of coffee and a couple muffins before him. The breakfast of champions. His black jeans fell over his equally dark boots, the bottoms of each covered in snow. Despite the pull to look at his watch he avoided it. Instead he occupied by shoving his grandfather’s dog tags behind his shirt least someone thought they were his. No, before his grandfather had passed he had entrusted them to Cameron. He had always been closer to his mother’s father out of all his grandparents. Now he wore them pretty much everywhere except for work. Even then it was tucked into his pants pockets. To him they were his lucky charm. His grandfather had always been encouraging of him pursuing a medical career so it felt like he had a bit of his grandfather with him.
Brooklyn had said she’d tell Oliver about Cameron and what he looked like though suggested he wear his bright green shirt. Cameron complied because it was important to her. And since she was close to his girlfriend, Kylie, he did anything he could to help. The things he did for the in his life-be it directly or indirectly-was amazing at times. But he was ever the gentleman and was always there to lend a helping hand. Even for his guy friends. Somehow Brooklyn thought he’d be able to talk this guy into working again. From what he gathered he basically stopped once his wife died. That was the awful part of having to deal with a loved one in medicine. Brooklyn said that his wife’s death had really taken a toll on the Brit. So much so he left England and came here to Hope Harbor. Brooklyn had apparently bugged him until he started to open up. Now she felt like he was ready to “get out there” as she said. Cameron obliged to pacify her. If this didn’t go well he just hoped this Oliver fellow didn’t hate him.
While he waited, Cameron pulled out a folder with some papers to read over some recent articles that had been released about the new way the state of Maine was handling heart attacks. He had been putting it off but since he was waiting it was a good enough time to look over it. Apparently it was supposed to completely change how every hospital handled a patient suffering from one. That and they had to change how they taught people CPR called “hands only” CPR. So many changes he ad to acquaint himself with.

Oliver said, pointing to him. He turned his hand from pointing to flat and ready to shake Camerons. Oliver Welcott....pleasure to meet you. Oliver smiled. This Oliver was a much better, brighter, seemingly happier fellow that what Brooklyn had probably described to Cameron. It wasn't necessarily that Oliver was feeling all these things, as much as he was putting his best foot forward, for Brooklyn, Tristan, and Gran. But more importantly it was what Lilian would have wanted and he had to bear it in mind. I'm sure that...Brooklyn...has told you a thing or...two...about me...and my...past...my wife and all of...that. Oliver bit his lip, looking a little bit uncomfortable. He leaned back in his chair, and crossed his arms over his chest, like he always did when he was either, excited, uncomfortable, or nervous. [/ul]

Cameron rubbed at the bridge of his nose as he read over the article, making a few notes where he thought were important or had questions. He’d have to talk to Lyle about doing a course on the new heart attack procedures. Though Lyle was technically his boss, with only three doctors in the emergency department right now they all sort of took on “supervisor” roles. Well, Cameron and Lyle did. The third doctor wasn’t too keen on doing anything supervisor related unless they had students. Cameron understood as he really didn’t want to either considering he was only just going into his second year of working here without being an intern. But the slack had to be picked up somehow. Which is why he was coming here to meet Oliver in the first place. Since Lyle was working he said he trusted Cameron to do the initial “interview” even though he wouldn’t conduct it as such. Sure he’d ask about his credentials and where he had worked prior but Brooklyn had rattled off some of those things. He just wanted someone who was sane, could think on their feet and pleasant around patients. Him, Lyle and Samantha were exhausted since two of them had to be on at all times. If they got a fourth person they could rotate as teams of the two people who each worked best together.
When a voice said his name he only raised his eyes before he lowered the papers. ”Hi, yes. Which makes you Oliver.” Cameron would have stood up but the other man had already sat down. Instead he flipped the first few pages back forward and tucked the papers back into the folder. With the plastic folder shut, he folded his hands and placed them in front of him. ”Same here. Brooklyn has been bugging me for months to come recruit you but I said that might not be wise unless you wanted to meet. I don’t have the, um, spirit Brooklyn does.” Yes, spirit was the best way to describe her as he chuckled.
Cameron leaned back and separated his hands as he looked this guy over. He was confused as Brooklyn made him seem realy depressed. He seemed very well put together and sure of himself. Then again, plenty of people put on an act for the rest of the world to see. He grabbed his non-click pen and tapped the end of it on the folder as he listened over Oliver. He gave a solitary nod in his direction before he breathed in through his nostrils, his chest puffing out slightly before he straightened his body back out. ”She did. I’m sorry to hear about all that.” He gazed at the folder before he looked back at Oliver. ”Which is why I didn’t want to push you like she does. Going through something like that couldn’t be easy. Especially being a doctor.” There was another pause as Cameron thought of how to tactfully word this. ”If you ever wanted to return to practicing medicine I can tell you the hospital would be glad to have you. We’re a fairly tight knit group, very supportive of one another. So you wouldn’t be doing this alone.”
He figured that was probably all he needed to say on that part. Cameron put on a genuine smile before he lifted his cup of coffee. ”What are did you work in back in London?”

Oliver watched as Cameron flipped the pages of the article he was reading, and sat back in his chair. The rather observant Brit had caught sight of the corner of the article and surmised what it was about. He wondered how much had changed over the past year and a half that he hadn't been practicing. Oliver also wondered how medicine was affected culturally. Perhaps his methods and standard procedures wouldn't line up with those of the hospitals here in the US. Oliver chuckled and sipped his coffee before commenting. Spirited she is indeed....that Brooklyn. Spirited didn't quite cut it. Pushy, a bit of a b**** , a pain in the butt, annoying, aggravating, exasperating. How many other words could he come up with to describe her. But he loved her at the same time, everyone did really. Brooklyn pushed people because she cared and she thought that was best for them. She always seemed to do only what she thought was best for person. That's really what Oliver admired most about her. Even if she was making a really stupid mistake, she was only making it because she was convinced it was the right thing to do, for herself and everyone else involved. Oliver nodded an swallowed hard with the subject of Lilian came up. Thank you ....Its been difficult...as I'm sure you can imagine. Brooklyn has convinced me to at least get out and try...But to be perfectly honest, I'd be happier locked up in my apartment as usual.... He sighed heavily. But....that's not what Lilian...my late wife...would want....So I'm trying...for her. It was still so very painful to speak about her. Every mention of her brought back a flood of beautiful memories, along with the lost promise of memories they would've made in the future. It also brought back the vivid memories of the day he had lost her. Oliver could still remember the feeling of her precious body going limp in his arms. He was glad, if that was the right word for it, that she had passed on to the next life in his arms. But for a truly dedicated Doctor, the worst thing that could ever happen to you, was losing a patient. Especially if that patient happened to be a family member. Oliver misses his Lil so much.
Surprisingly, Oliver felt pretty comfortable talking with Cameron and thought there might be some potential that he might enjoy getting back to work. Cameron made it sound like he'd have a good support group and if he decided to go for it, he was sure they'd let him start slow. Maybe just a few shifts a week starting out and see where it went from there.
Oliver leaned forward and put his elbows on the table. Well... he began. I started out as an EMT and then I was a Paramedic and moved up to an ER Doc and ended up going to school again and becoming a heart surgeon at the Albion Hospital in London....So I've done a bit of everything. He explained and sipped his coffee again.
So tell me about your set up and what you think I could do to help you all out. Oliver continued with interest. [/ul]

Cameron took careful observations of Oliver. One might think Cameron was being creepy but one could judge a doctor by his appearance. Sure, Cameron had a bit of stubble on his chin but his hair was cut regularly and in a style that was out of his eyes. His clothing, even the casual ones, were clean and ironed. He regularly showered and washed his hands often which caused him to use an unscented lotion to combat dry skin. The nails on his fingers were cut short while he regularly trimmed his cuticles to keep any hang nails or cuts from forming to cutback the risk of infection. He took pride in his appearance as that’s what people saw first. With a doctor when you looked like you took care of yourself people were confident in you taking care of them.
Oliver looked like he fit the bill. Aside from his rather wild hair but that was it. Even then it’s not like it went down past his shoulders and he kept in unruly. It was a little...whacky? Yes, whacky but nothing scary looking. And he knew how to keep his demeanor. He wasn’t a fool to what Brooklyn had done to this Oliver’s brother. No, Cameron didn’t know him and Kylie had told him about it. And Sydni. Those two women told him more about people’s lives then he wished to knew. Even if Oliver was upset with Brooklyn he wasn’t letting it show. He respected that. Another good quality checked off on his list.
Cameron kept silent while Oliver explained himself. This was a sensitive subject, his wife’s death. All Brooklyn had let Cameron in on was she had gotten sick and ended up passing. She didn’t go into too much depth as she at least had the respect to keep that to herself. If Oliver and him ever talked about it and he wished to tell Cameron then so be it. Otherwise Cameron himself wouldn’t push the issue. ”Grieving is hard. So was your wife and I don’t blame you for wanting to stay shut in. my own father withdrew into himself but he...well he never tried to get back out there like you are.” There was a tense smile on Cameron’s lips. Occasionally his old man called him up but that was to ask for money. Cameron, nor anyone else in his family, would help unless he had been sober at least six months. His father never went longer the four months without a drink. Thankfully he made his own family along with his blood relatives. Between his “work family” and his few close friends, he was very content with his life. He had no memories of his mother which was probably good because the pain wasn’t bad. Still, he wondered what she was like and if she would be proud of him now.
Cameron leaned forward bringing his chair closer with him as Oliver listed his credentials. ”A heart surgeon? Wow.” They only had general surgeons on hand which were good for easy fixes or doing something temporary until a patient could be air lifted out. Cameron shifted around to find a blank piece of paper. Ah, he had put a few sheets in his folder. He scrawled out a few notes so he didn’t forget those details to tell his boss later. The tip of his pen remained pressed hard against the piece of paper as his other hand brought the coffee to his lips. Afterwards he cleared his throat before he spun the pen in between his fingers. ”Well our hospital is small. We have an emergency room, an ob unit, a small general surgery area and then a floor for patients we need to admit for various things that we can take care of. Then we have a couple small practices based out of the building. Mainly we’re looking for doctor’s in the emergency department. We only have three so trying to schedule is a bit...hectic. We’d ideally like five soon but we’d be happy to add even one more person.” Cameron nodded in Oliver’s direction.
”I’ll be honest. Most nights are boring. During the day you get the fishermen who get injured and various student injuries but otherwise nothing major. With a trauma we get the patient stable until a medicopter comes and then fly them out. Really it’s not that exciting at all which would be good because you haven’t practiced for a year or two right? That is if you’re interested.”

Oliver said sympathetically. Perhaps if Oliver could get himself back together, sometime in the future, when he'd reached his "full stability", he'd be able to help men going through what he himself and Cameron's dad were suffering through. Oliver nodded. Yah...a heart surgeon.... He heaved a rather heavy sigh. Ironic...considering my wife passed due to a heat condition...I caught it too late. She needed a transplant...But you know how the lists go. Couldn't get one in time. If she'd have allowed me to give her my own...I would have. It was obvious that Oliver meant that with all his heart, no pun intended. He would have done anything to trade places with Lilian. She had been such a strong, brave , woman. She had told Oliver that the only thing that hurt about dying, was that she'd have to wait so long to kiss him again. Oliver pulled his glasses out of a pocket of his suit coat and slipped them on, making him look rather collegiate. Than he took out a pen and paper and as Cameron spoke about the hospital, Oliver took down the info. He was one of those people who liked to be organized and there for took many notes when in these situations. But that was of course a good thing. Because those that kept track of the situation, tended to be more....on the ball, then others. It was certainly a smaller operation than Oliver was used to. But he didn't mind it. It was good to start small...maybe even stay small, depending on if he decided to live his days out here, or go back to Britain eventually. Yeah...It's been a few years. Oliver confirmed. So boring nights are....just fine with me. he chuckled lightly. Most nights, Oliver couldn't sleep well anyway and when he did sleep, he usually dreamed of Lilian. So perhaps doing something productive a few nights a week would be helpful to him. Well I am certainly interested in the job....I just would like to...start...slowly, I suppose. Maybe just a shift or two a week to start out with...se how I do. He sounded a bit coy. Oliver didn't want to come across to anyone as lazy or not wanting to his fair share for the facility [/ul]

Cameron hated it when people felt bad because of the situation with his father. Cameron wasn’t. he felt no pity for the man. The elder Matthews could stay sober if he wanted but refused to. He claimed to want a relationship with Cameron but not enough to stay clean? So Cameron cut all ties and didn’t give a care in the world. Still, he nodded when Oliver apologized. He mumbled out a ”Thank you,” and then moved on. He wasn’t too keen on the topic staying on his father as he couldn’t answer anything else about him.
Cameron’ features softened in sympathy for the poor man. To know you specialized in the care that a loved one needed had to be heart wrenching. No wonder he hadn’t been working in medicine. Cameron himself would probably go a little insane as well. He knew he already had a hard time when he lost a patient and those were ones he didn’t even know. ”I’m truly sorry for that. I can’t imagine what you went through.” Cameron’s eyes looked along Oliver’s figure. If Oliver was upset recounting this story then Cameron couldn’t tell as the other doctor did well at hiding it.
It was amusing how the two men did similar things while talking-such as taking notes. It made Cameron hopeful that Oliver would take the job. As he told Oliver from the beginning he wouldn’t push this job on him. He was laying out the options and if the Englishman decided to take it then so be it. He was sure plenty of the residents of this town would find it interesting to have a Brit working in the hospital. Cameron knew girls. They fawned over anything with an accent. Sometimes it was adorable and other times it could be fairly annoying. Annoying if things became obsessive such as girls with that British pop boy band. Now there were some girls who were scary obsessed with them.
A kind smiled formed. ”I figured as much from what Brooklyn told me.” Honestly as long as the man still ahd his skills and his degree was legitimate the hospital didn’t care so much. They hardly ever did anything high end so lawsuits were rare. There had only been one because of a problem with a woman’s delivery but the girl turned out to be a pill addict and was looking for quick cash from a settlement. So now the woman no longer had her baby because the kid was born strung out and she was made to be a fool. Real exciting cases here at Hope Regional Hospital.
A wide grin formed as Cameron chuckled. ”Excellent.” he said in reference to Oliver wanting to join the team. When he mentioned starting slow Cameron put a knowing hand up. ”No need to explain yourself. Honestly where you haven’t been practicing lately I’m sure the hospital will want to do that same thing.” Cameron flipped through the folder to look at the schedule the emergency room staff currently had going. ”How long of shifts did you want to start out with? We could rotate you with us of us three doctors to see who you mesh well with to continue to help ease you into deciding if you want to stay of not.”
