The night before had been chaotic. Leila had fainted after getting sick and ended up in the ER. The last couple weeks she had felt under the weather. She barely got through her shifts anymore without needing at least three cups of cola. When home, she usually crashed. She even didn’t feel up to doing anything at all at Daniel’s. Truthfully, she preferred going to his house after work because she got better sleep there. There had been a few times she had gotten sick. It wasn’t surprising considering there was a bug going around work. Bugs went around the restaurant quickly. Usually Leila could shake them off quickly but this time around she just couldn’t. Perhaps it’s because her body crashed pretty hard after she stopped the hormones then she went on the pill. Plus this winter had been a weird one. Most of November and the beginning of December had been fairly warm-right around the forties. Then it dipped down into the twenties and lower. That had shocked a lot of people’s systems. Apparently Leila’s was one of them.
Or so she thought.
Again, at work, Leila had felt awful. She went to Daniel’s anyways because they hadn’t really seen each other yesterday or the day before that. Once there she just continued to feel awful. She tried to eat something he had made but it instantly came back up. Almost instantly. Daniel had been sweet in helping her out but she just wanted to go back to her place after that. She was in no state to drive so she curled up in the passenger seat and dozed until they got to her house. He helped her into the house where her mother and her brother who was only a couple years older. They didn’t get to the stairs before she threw up again and then passed out. Leila didn’t remember much from the night before as she slept most of the time at the hospital. Reagan had used a catheter to get some urine, blood was taken and from what she was told, three bags of iv was pumped into her before she was allowed to go home. Though one giant thing stood out from all the blur.
Leila Scott was three months pregnant.
With Daniel Zakarian’s baby.
Yes, it had been quiet a shock to everyone. Leila was sort of in denial last night while her mother and Daniel were more then overjoyed. Maybe it’s because she was so sick that she was in denial or because of everything she had gone through the entire year. Not that she wasn’t happy, she was, but now it just complicated her life more. What about college in a month? And after that? Her family didn’t have room for a baby here or would she move in with Daniel? Would they get married or wait? What would his family thing? What about her brothers? They had only been together about six months so this would be a shock. All that went through Leila’s mind while she told Daniel while she was in denial about things. After she was allowed to go home, the car ride home was fairly silent. Except for her mother. The woman was so excited. Still, Leila asked her not to tell anyone tonight. Leila didn’t want to deal with everyone. In fact, she asked her mother to wait until she figured things out. Figured things out like what her and Daniel wanted to do plus her talking to Alex. Yes, she had to tell Alex before anyone else because of a promise she made to him after their fight. Then tomorrow after they all celebrated Christmas together, Leila and Daniel could sit down and talk. Just, not tonight. Leila didn’t want to talk tonight.
Once they helped her into her room, her mother rushed off to at least tell her father. Leila and Daniel talked quietly before she told him she wanted to sleep. Plus, he should make a quick escape before her father killed him. That was a good enough reason to not have Daniel stay the night despite him insisting to. Once alone, she sat there a moment, just holding her stomach in thought before she texted Alex to come to her room. A little while later he came around and the two talked. For awhile she couldn’t really tell how her brother felt. Obviously it was weird his sister having his friend’s baby. Just as weird as him catching them. She explained why she was telling him now and to keep it a secret. After they talked for awhile longer, her lids began to feel heavy as she laid there looking up at him. Leila couldn’t remember if he left before or after she had fallen asleep. All she knew was that the whole sleeping part was really nice.
Morning was coming through her windows but she was fighting waking up. She knew she should get up because it was Christmas Day but Leila just didn’t want to. Her family would understand why she couldn’t go downstairs. Or she hoped they would. After she turned onto her opposite side, Leila grabbed a pillow, pressed it to her chest and stomach before she pulled up into the fetal position. Everything was bothering her. She felt like her head was throbbing and despite being hungry, she just didn’t want to eat. The smell of the warm breakfast wafting from downstairs just would not do. Until everyone was done eating, she would stay up here. Perhaps sleep a bit longer. Yes, it’s not like anyone besides family was coming this early in the morning. Friends and everyone’s significant others weren’t supposed to come for another hour or two. That left her plenty of time to sleep some more, shower and make herself look halfway decent. She didn’t want to give anything away until she was ready to. Good thing she was skilled enough with her make-up to do that.
A soft groan escaped her lips as a wave of nausea passed over her. The grip on her pillow tightened as she brought her legs up as far as she could. Everything was a mess in her head and she didn’t want to spend Christmas Day thinking about it. As soon as her family felt it was fine, she’d leave with Daniel and they could go to his place to talk. They really needed to figure things out. There was so much to do in the next few months all while he worked and she went to school as well as worked. Maybe Leila needed to pick on or the other. If she was feeling this way now, when she got further along she might feel worse. How could she chose between a job to get things or college to get a better job and contribute? That was cruel and something she just wished she didn’t have to think about. Yes, she knew she wanted kids but she had been on the pill to prevent it from happening too soon. She had mentally prepared herself for the idea she’d need IVF and hormones to help her get pregnant. Not that she’d be pregnant at nineteen with a guy she had been dating for less then a year.
For now, Leila whimpered herself until she dozed back to sleep. The blanket over her head provided the perfect amount of darkness to help her drift on the waves of sleep. Only her chin stuck out but considering her back was towards the door, no one would be able to see her if they came in. Still, everyone knew she was in here because she hadn’t left since coming home from the hospital.

Everything had moved in such a blur last night at the hospital. Quite a few things had happened that stood out in his mind. One of the top things was the fact that Leila one-hundred percent healthy. His mind had been active the whole night and he had barley gotten any sleep. There was one thing on his mind that he kept repeating it all over and over in which kept him awake almost the whole night. His old house wasn’t the place to spend the night so he had joined his grandparents in his new house. Their old house that was so beautifully decorated for Christmas.
As the morning light came through the large ornate windows of the master bedroom flooding it with the strong Christmas morning light he groaned. Pulling the blankets above his head he turned over and fell back asleep for another few minutes. It was then that everything that had happened last night returned to his mind. Leila was fine but…wow. Tossing off the blankets fast he runs into the shower to clean up for Christmas at the Scott’s house today. After he cleans up he heads back out and walks into the closet and picks out something nice to wear.
Happy with the way he looks he heads down to the great family room to the Christmas tree and gathers up the Scotts Christmas presents. The little one he had for Leila in his pocket as he goes and loads up the car with the presents. His mind rushing with the thoughts of what happened last night. The words echoing in his head over and over again.
“Leila’s three months pregnant.”
Four words that changed his life forever. In another six months the couple would have a child and everything in their lives would be changed. Climbing into his car he put it into gear as he drove off towards the Scott’s house. He knew his grandparents would have the whole house cleaned up and ready for his return tonight. Hopefully everything would go well tonight with what he was going to ask.
Pulling up to the Scotts house he smiled as he looked at it. Everything would be decided by the end of tonight. Parking the car he hopped out of the car and gathered up the presents then walked up to the door. Ringing the bell he smiled when Mrs. Scott came up and opened the door. A smile on his face as he gave her a hug and a kiss to the cheek. “Is Leila up yet?” She guided him to her room and he nodded as he placed the bag in the room with their tree and headed up to it.
When he arrived at her door he smiled as he knocked gently on it. “You awake, Leila?” Hell, if she was messy he didn’t care. He loved that girl with everything and now there was going to be proof. Oh god, her brothers were going to kill him. He was going to have to take shelter in her room with her. That was unless they didn’t know yet! Then he would be safe!

Her body really needed just a little bit more. Now that she had been to the hospital and gotten her body a kick start back into gear, she would be better able to keep up her energy levels. Just last night had dragged on and she wanted to rest as much as possible. Especially since her family Christmases were nuts. There’d be so much going on and it was draining when one wasn’t pregnant. Which was another reason she stayed hidden up here. Leila just didn’t want to be around anyone yet. Still, she was just slightly aware of someone coming into her room, putting something on one of the surfaces in the room. What it was or where it was put she couldn’t be sure as she much too tired. That person smoothed what hair was visible out of her face. The hands felt soft like her mother’s but the grogginess made her body feel slightly numb so it could be anyone. After a few moments, they left her alone to get some more sleep. Soon she wouldn’t be able to get away with hiding up here. At least one of her brother’s would come bug her and she had it narrowed down to which two would be the most likely culprits.
Leila groaned when she heard the knock on her door, finally drawing her out of dreamland. There really was no chance of her getting more sleep. With a sigh, she realized it was Daniel. ”Hold on,” she replied out thickly. Her tongue felt like cotton though not as bad as it did just twelve hours prior. A glance around showed some water on her side table. Vaguely she remembered her mom coming in not long ago and bringing it in here for her. That and a plate of snacks. She ignored them for now and pushed herself out of bed. Since going to the hospital she had to admit she felt better. The fluids were probably what did it as Leila really let those slide. Now she couldn’t. even if she didn’t feel like it, Leila had to force herself to have at least water as well as actually eat. A feeling formed that people would be on her case twice as often now.
Once she felt the dizziness of just waking up wear off, Leila padded over to the door and opened it to let Daniel in. As she walked away from the door, she raked her hand through her hair until she got to the plate of food. There were some saltines, bits of fruit and some peanut butter crackers. She felt her stomach growl as she reached for the package of peanut butter crackers, settling herself back on her bed. ”You’re here early.” Not that Leila didn’t want him here just she felt nervous around him like the first days of them together. The news they had received last night had been shocking in more ways then one. They had so much to figure out now, too much. Leila’s head already hurt from thinking about all they stuff they had to talk about and they stuff she had to figure out on her own. Like school. That would be a giant hurdle with a newborn. The exhaustion that came with studying for school coupled with the exhaustion f being a new parent? Leila really did have to think of what to do.
She crossed her legs before pulling her blanket over her legs, settling back against her pillows before she started to munch on the crackers. Once done her bit of a snack she’d get dressed and ready to join everyone downstairs but she wanted to hide away for a little bit longer. She hadn’t talked to her dad last night but knew her mom had told him. Leila was actually scared of his reaction. She had no idea if he’d be happy, disappointed, angry with Daniel or a mixture of all three. All of the uncertainty made Leila extra quiet today. There were days she just sort of kept to herself but today she was already withdrawn much deeper then normal. All her normal guards to protect herself were up, making her slightly tense. Since the night of the dance to kick off the Founder’s Fair, Leila had been a lot more open about her feelings and general thoughts. Now she was regressing from the fear of the unknown.

MAYBE I'M A DIFFERENT BREED
[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 355px;]christmas day had rolled around again, like it always did. jackson wasn't a big holiday person, though he still hung out with his family on those occasions. especially his cousins. not that he needed an excuse to come around, since he did so frequently, anyway. jackson was very close to his cousins, which was one of the few reasons why he actually enjoyed living in hope harbor. given the choice, he'd pick just about anywhere else but maine. he didn't like the fact it was chilly or cold year around. it felt like that to him, anyway. but to the people who'd lived in that climate their entire lives, the low sixties felt like the seventies, probably. jackson couldn't complain too much, though. despite it being a small town, there were plenty of girls for him to flirt with.
jackson had spent the morning with his mom and sisters, exchanging gifts and eating a big breakfast together. his sisters had gone home afterwards, having other plans, and his mom had got busy checking papers. so jackson would be the only one hanging out at the scott home this christmas. he'd gotten each of them a gift, nothing major, of course; but he knew his cousins well enough to get things they'd like. he hadn't been over in a couple weeks, actually. they'd both had things going on, though usually he'd visit them two or three times a week, if not more.
he'd got dressed, pulled on his leather jacket, grabbed the bag of gifts, some from his mom and sisters, and left to head to their house. jackson always kept a pack of cigarettes in it, so he pulled one out and lit it, drawing on it as he walked. it was a good thing that it wasn't far, because it was freezing out. anyone looking at him would be able to tell he was cold. shoulders hunched, quick pace, and his nose and cheeks beginning to turn red. jackson thought again how much he hated this weather just as he reached the place. he knocked, then walked in, not bothering to wait for a response. they'd no doubt know who it was, anyway, having been expecting him.
jackson stomped his feet to get the snow off his boots, then unzipped his jacket, not bothering to take it off yet, even though it was nice and warm in the house. he heard voices calling hellos and soon reached the living room where most of them were. jackson smiled, saying his hellos, then handed his bag of gifts over. he noticed that leila wasn't there, and neither was daniel. he wondered if something might be wrong, but everyone seemed happy enough. maybe she hadn't slept well the night before and daniel might not have been there, yet.

The night before had been sort of traumatic, in some ways, and Nick sure as hell didn’t want to live through that again, though he knew there was a very good chance he would eventually have to. After all, with Leila’s condition, you never knew when things would happen, but last night had been totally out of the blue and all he could remember thinking was how frightened he’d been because his sister had suddenly passed out and they had to call the ambulance to get her to the ER. THAT had been super scary but their mother had kept most of the others home and not that many of them went with her, which kind of didn’t sit all that well with Nick but he didn’t want to argue, and besides, as far as anyone knew there was a bug going around – Leila had talked to him about that a little bit, how a lot of people got sick – the weather had been thoroughly weird and to top it all off he knew his sister’s immune system wasn’t the strongest to begin with right now. It was kind of not so good, really, though he’d been very happy once they’d brought her home and they all seemed to go off to sleep afterwards. Nick didn’t even think there was anything more to the whole thing than a bug or just her condition, one or the other would be enough of a reason to get her in a bad shape, and she really had seemed under the weather lately, even he had noticed it and he hadn’t been home during college years a lot so he’d missed a bit of the family stuff at those points, but he wasn’t as blond as some people might consider him to be. Actually, it worked in his favour, honestly, given that people tended to underestimate him a lot just because he didn’t quite look the part of being a forensic, but it worked for him so he never pointed out how wrong they were until he got something to smile at them and show them he wasn’t just some other idiot who happened to be working a job he couldn’t do. No, Nick was good at what he did and he wouldn’t take anything else for an answer, which was definitely something he had learned during his time away and in rehab.
That morning hadn’t actually started off as great for him, and he knew exactly what was wrong, from time to time his boy reminded him that he used drugs back in the day, and he knew he needed to do something or he’d be cranky the whole freaking day through, and since it was Christmas Day, it wouldn’t really work well in that aspect. So he’d woken pretty early and dressed quietly, making sure not to wake anyone, least of all Leila, and went out into the freezing morning air to jog it off. He did that a lot of the time now, jogged at various hours of the day and pounded his body until he couldn’t feel that ache anymore, but a different kind, the physical one which didn’t allow him to consider any other. He’d been gone for a good hour, but seeing as he’d gone out at around six or sometime later, he was back at the house before too many people were up which meant he could take a hot shower without anyone barging in, as in, his youngest brother who seemed to have a knack for doing just that. It was amusing, and annoying as well. So after that was over and done with Nick had dressed warmly and sauntered into the kitchen where he kissed his mother for good morning and answered his father’s questions where he’d been, since his parents knew him well enough that when he got all bundled up in the morning he’d probably been out. Running. I needed to take some edge off. They didn’t press the issue and he warmed his hands around a cup of tea, leaning against the counter. Is Leila okay? There was an affirmative and he relaxed visibly, able to enjoy the tea and quiet before things got all hectic for Christmas, which meant as soon as Mark thundered down the stairs, grabbing the bagel Nick was holding clean out of his hands. Oi! Who raised you, a pack of wolves?! Nick exclaimed after him while their father tried not to laugh, and the older of the brothers rolled his eyes, turning and muttering under his breath while taking a fresh one. Seriously. No, David, get your own and don’t do everything Mark does! Follow Alex’s example instead, he grumbled, snatching the food out of reach as well as his cup of tea. People, this is why I liked being away for college! he commented, shaking his head while he found himself a seat. Leila didn’t come down from her room but he didn’t find it worrisome given she’d been to the hospital the night before, and he missed Daniel’s arrival because David was adamantly trying to be a bother. When was the last time someone boxed his ears? Nick asked with a roll of his eyes, greeting Jackson with a lifted hand, Hey man! Long time no see – how are you? tagged .

Today would not be easy keeping this from everyone. Sure she kept plenty of secrets-hell she kept individual secrets for each brother from everyone else-but this one would be tough. As scared as Leila was she was also excited. She had gotten pregnant on her own! No use of hormones nor pricey in vitro. Even if Daniel’s feelings had changed since last night she would be happy. Sure, things would be difficult if she had to find a way to do things on her own but she’d managed. Not that she thought Daniel would just split from the picture but she didn’t want to put any pressure on him. They hadn’t even been together a year and things seemed to be going better with Alex. Who knew what this would make happen?
Leila pounded down the last half of her glass of water as she polished off her package of peanut butter crackers. Being of few words today she just set everything aside on her nightstand before she pushed her covers off her body. A shiver went down her body since she forgot to put her slippers on first and the hardwood floors were chilly. Their family kept their heat right around sixty-eight degrees during the winter. Though they may throw wood in the fireplace. As she moved around the room she pulled out her outfit that she planned to wear today over her desk chair. A red tank top with a black v-neck sweater over it and some jeans. Each item were ones that were a little loose. No she wasn’t huge or anything but now that she knew the tiny pouch she had going on wasn’t bloating from her impending period or just random weight gain she was selfish conscious. With a tense smile she pressed a kiss to Daniel’s forehead. ”I’m going to take a shower,” was softly muttered before she left. Once in the bathroom, which was already littered with wet towels, Leila peeled off her nightgown and looked at herself in the full length mirror on the door while the water began to heat up. A hand ran over the tiny bump. No, nothing that screamed she was pregnant but now that she knew she was, she realized how wrong she had been the last couple months she had felt ill. With a look mixed with tension and joy, she peeled off her undergarments before she stepped into the shower. It was a quick one as she began to feel dizzy from lack of real food. Once out Leila took her blow dryer to get her hair almost completely dry then she ran her fingers and some mouse through it to allow it to dry in it’s natural, somewhat wavy state. Then she did the finally little things like deodorant, brushing her teeth and applying her make-up. Once satisfied, she wrapped the towel wrapped around her and trudged back to her room.
She saw Daniel was still there and chuckled under her breath. ”Are you scared to be around everyone while alone right now? Because you shouldn’t be. Mom only told dad. Then I only told Alex because of a promise I made to not keep big things from him and if he’s smart he won’t start anything with the entire family here.” After Leila had pulled some underwear and a bra on, her clothes went on next. While she searched her drawers for socks she let out, ”Have you told your parents yet?” Leila hoped they’d be happy. Her parents were. Well, at least her mom was. She hadn’t seen her father yet so she wasn’t entirely sure on that front. Once her socks were in hand she plopped her body into her chair to slip them on before grabbing some jewelry. Leila was doing everything she could to appear as normal as possible. Especially after her episode last night. Once the finally earring was in her cartridge she put her hands on her knees and rubbed them slightly. ”Guess we should head downstairs.”
Leila’s heart raced as she headed downstairs. From the sounds of it Jackson had arrived which made her happy. When Jackson had first gotten cancer Leila had been the one that tried to do anything he wanted to do without thinking about that. Though her condition wasn’t terminal, she knew how crappy it felt when people treated you different. One could only had their own emotional state so much in those type of situations let everyone else’s too? When she walked into the kitchen her whole demeanor changed. her tone became airy as she tried to seem at ease, not the silent mess she was upstairs. David was immediately asking her if the fall knocked some sense into her. ”No but let’s see if I can help do some for you.” Leila went up behind him and wrapped an arm around his neck and started to give him a noogie when her mother shot her a warning glance. Leila knew that look. It was a “don’t mess with me” look. She knew why her mother was sending it so released her brother with a friendly shove as she went over to the counter to make herself some toast. Leila nudged Nicholas playfully with her arm as she grinned. ”You ok there buddy? I thought you might faint as well after all the fun last night. Are you sure you’re cut out to be in forensics?” Leila couldn’t help but tease. She just wanted to forget about what happened last night.
A glance around showed her father stood now silent along the edge of the group, his gaze in the general direction of Daniel. This would probably be the most tense Christmas since the one just after people found out about Nick’s drug use. At least tense on her end. After her food popped and she was putting some jam on it she looked at Mark who looked worried. Leila rolled her eyes. ”Ok I’m only going to say this once. I am fine. I was just dehydrated and literally exhausted ok everyone? Now can we please open presents.” Anything to keep everyone distracted and busy. Especially her and her parents.

War! That was what today was going to feel like. He was going to be all alone with the Scott men and their father. Great! He was one loan soldier in a house of five; yes count it, five Scott men. This was going to be one tense Christmas day. Hopefully he and Alex would be in a better place soon so he would at least have one of the Scott men on his side. Leila and her mother should be enough. Who didn’t listen to their mother of the sister they always protected. His eyes stayed on her as she drank the water and ate the crackers. At some point she was going to have to get real food into her. Gently his hands massaged her shoulders and back while she ate. When she got up to get her outfit he watched her with a smile on his lips. Leaning up he returned the kiss to her forehead and smiled. “Are you going to need any help?” He teased her playfully knowing she wouldn’t.
While he waited in her room he started straightening things up with a smile. When he came across the picture of them on her nightstand he smiled as he picked it up and looked at it. That was the best day of their lives. Someone had been kind enough to take a picture of them together at the town dance at the founders fair. Sitting back down on her bed he relaxed as he waited for her to show up. Both Leila and her mother were his shield today. The fact that there were five men in here that could all beat him up at one time scared him.
When she finally came back he relaxed and smiled up at her. “You bet your pretty little ass I am! They could all kick my ass and I wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.” When she spoke up about telling Alex all the color from his face drained. “You told Alex?” He tensed up a little bit but when she started getting dressed he relaxed. The small bump on her belly was so beautiful to see. It was also a shocker to know that was their baby right there. Looking back up into her eyes he smiled and nodded. “My grandmothers exact words: ‘I knew it! I told you that you two were a perfect match together.’ My grandfather pretty much had the same reaction except she was crushing me in a hug.” He wanted to tell his parents with her so they could be together. “I wanted to tell my parents together.”
As she pulled her socks on and mentioned about going downstairs he gulped and nodded his head. “Yeah, we should. I don’t even want to think about what they think we’re doing up here.” Jokes, best thing to try and do in a moment like this. Following her down stairs he smiled at everyone as they entered the room. When he spotted Jackson he smiled at him warmly. “Hey Jackson. How are you?” He moved so he was standing next to Leila as he spotted the look her father was giving him. Leaning over he whispered into her ear. “I think your father wants to kill me.” He took her free hand in his and squeezed it gently. When he spotted Nick he grinned. This could be another possible ally in this whole thing too. “Nick! How are you doing?”

There were a few things he had missed while being away at university, but then again he’d always come home for the holidays, unless something came up, which had been one year when there’d been so much snow that any kind of transport had been completely out of the question, and so Nick had been forced to spend the Christmas holidays on campus, but it hadn’t been all that bad since most of the others had been stuck there too so they had their own little party there. Now, being home, things were definitely just the way they used to be, and he had time to reflect that while he was also trying to save himself from not being overrun while drinking his cup of tea. Seriously, Mark, if you don’t stop slamming into me ‘on accident’, I’m going to punch you, he said towards his brother, rolling his eyes and standing from his seat to go and take the cup back to the kitchen. Mom, please tell me this isn’t his usual behaviour, I remember him as being quiet and obedient. Their mother simply laughed and gave him an amused look, which Nick took as a good enough sign and sighed softly before returning to the living room to make sure his spot didn’t get claimed. He was just quick enough since apparently, it became a race of who would annoy him further and he pushed David out of balance a little bit while he went in, just because. Hey! Respect your elders, kid, Nick told him, amused, stretching one leg out and rubbing his knee as he did so, feeling some tension slip out of it. It was always the same after jogging in cold weather, one of his knees started acting up and he had no idea why, neither did the doctors, especially since it seemed to be coming out of the blue and he hadn’t actually had any injury that could potentially have led to this. Then again, he didn’t trust the doctors as much lately, not after seeing the way some of his class mates at college had twisted them around their little finger, just like that.
Nick didn’t know the whole story behind his cousin’s cancer, actually, he didn’t even know Jackson had cancer, so he didn’t really think anything was different, except maybe that the younger man looked a bit tired, but that was it. And, seeing as there would be Christmas at the Scott’s as per usual, well, tired wasn’t even the beginning of it all. Nick grinned when he saw Leila finally come down the stairs though, followed by Daniel, and David seemed to flail slightly when she grabbed him. You go sis, he commented with an amused laugh as he went into the kitchen again, shaking his head, his eyes going from her to Daniel and back. Sure, she’d told him about why exactly Alex was pissed off in the first place, and to be perfectly honest Nick would have probably punched Daniel on the spot had he been the one to walk into the bathroom to find the two as his older brother had found them. But if he was fair, he could see the way his sister seemed to light up a little bit whenever Daniel was around, and Daniel seemed genuinely in love with her, and it hadn’t been Nick to begin with, so his solution to the problem was that he would ignore thinking about the obvious until the last possible moment and therefore save his own sanity and peace of mind. Besides, he remembered Daniel as one of Alex’s friends who was really a nice guy all around and had never actually bullied him or anything, like some other people he could remember, which said a lot about a person in Nick’s mind. Leila nudged him, and he rolled his eyes, lightly poking her arm in return. Fun’s an understatement. We should’ve thrown a party. And I’m fine, thankyouverymuch, you just watch out for your toast. Food apparently grows legs in this house pretty quick. He flashed her a smile, though he was relieved to hear her say she was fine and apparently, it had just been something minor. That was definitely better than learning she’d fainted because she had another bad thing going for her, it would’ve been too much for everyone in the family, honestly. At Daniel’s greeting, Nick smiled, Hey Daniel; I’m getting used to being back home, which with these two is slightly impossible to begin with. He steered Mark away from himself as the other guy went by, then motioned, Since my sister’s anxious about presents, let’s go. Saved you a seat if you want it. tagged .

MAYBE I'M A DIFFERENT BREED
[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 355px;]jackson had walked in on something, though he knew his cousins. they were always at each other, though usually not in a serious way. he did the same when with them; always joking, plowing into each other, since it was all guys, except leila. jackson figured if he tried that with her one of two things might happen. she'd snap like a twig because she was so skinny, or she'd fight back and no doubt hurt him. probably the second one, since she was used to all their rough housing.
he grinned as nick greeted him, shaking hands and chest bumping him, as was usual. "i'm doin great, nick. you?" well, jackson was lying a bit, but they didn't need to know. it wasn't like his life was in danger or anything. he'd deal with the treatments, get rid of the cancer again and hope it never came back. no need to worry anyone. jackson helped himself to a snack and some orange juice. he chatted away with them, catching up a bit, when he heard someone walk into the room. he looked around questioningly when david asked about her fall. no one had mentioned anyone anything about that to him, which was kind of odd. "hey cuz," jackson greeted leila with a smile and a hug. he'd missed her. "what's this about a fall?" he didn't like the sounds of that.
jackson smiled back as daniel greeted him. "hey man," he replied. "i'm great. you?" he liked daniel, though he didn't seem to be the most popular person just now, he noticed. it was obvious, from the look he was getting from his uncle. jackson didn't ask, however, figuring it'd come out soon enough, anyway. if something was actually wrong.

Between the back rub and trying to keep the mood light. It helped a little though her mind was still racing. She chuckled at his comment about helping her. No, “helping” her is what got her into this situation. No, actually if she calculated correctly with the due date given then helping her have fun around Halloween. The two had gone to a party the weekend before Halloween since there was a huge storm moving in. The two got a little crazy and the alcohol must have messed up her birth control. And the condom broke? What kind of luck was that? No she wouldn’t let her and Daniel get carried away like that again in the future if they stayed together. Not that she’d let this happen again anytime soon. As soon as she had this baby she was going on a different birth control. Though, to be fair, around that time all her hormones were still in her body. This situation was so messed up. At least Daniel now knew everything as she outlined why she didn’t believe the doctors last night. And he also knew she had been on hormones and everything else. Hey, when was there going to be a better time? Leila was already pregnant. Now they had one so if they stayed together there was no pressure to try and spend thousands of dollars.
Leila shrugged nonchalantly. ”Well you wouldn‘t be that outnumbered. Since only three people know you‘ll be safe since one of them is completely ecstatic.” To Leila there was a lot to talk about. Probably not as much as Daniel thought or there actually was in reality but inside she was in serious freak out more. Like ready to jump out of her skin, pace the room and go off on a tangent freak out mode. ”Yeah. After he caught us when we fixed things I had to promise him I would tell him major things about us before I “surprised” everyone else. I think this counts as a major event.” With her two tops over her head Leila ran her hand through her hair to get rid of the frizz the sweat had caused. ”But he’s the only one. Like I said last night I don’t want to tell everyone just yet. I’d rather us talk once we’re done here.” Leila just didn’t want to talk here. She had no idea how this conversation would go. If they yelled then her brothers would know what was going on and that’d be really bad. If it got really sweet between them well, who knows what these pregnancy hormones might lead to. That would be awkward to have happen in her room with her entire family downstairs on Christmas Day.
A look of confusion came over Leila’s face while she put her earrings in her lobes while he head shook. ”No offense and I’m not saying I disagree but what would us being a perfect match have to do with us having a baby?” Maybe just because she had so much on her mind she didn’t understand it. Once she was satisfied with how she was put together Leila looked at the desk. She had tucked the copies of the ultrasound under a piece of paper. She tugged at it, looking over the image. It already was starting to look like a baby. Well, a fuzzy image of a baby with no defined features at all. With a shake of her head she tucked it back away before she looked back up at Daniel. ”Alright. We were planning on going there later tonight anyways, right?” At least his parents would be easier to deal with then her brothers. Her eyes rolled as they made their way to the door. She couldn’t help but laugh as she mentioned lightly, ”What would they be worried about? Me getting pregnant or something?” That was just too easy for her to resist.
Leila watched as everyone interacted with one another. Her family did like Daniel well enough. Hopefully whenever they told everyone it would go smoothly. Leila went through the first piece of toast. Apparently she was a lot hungrier then she thought. As she started on the second piece is when Daniel made his way next to her to which she gave a small smile. When her mother plopped some eggs on her plate Leila knew there was no arguing. Even if she didn’t “feel” like them she had three or four people at least who would get on her case about it. She picked up her plate and a fork but only after she put some ketchup on them. There, that’d make them taste better. As she started to inhale them, she talked to her family in between bites. ”See the difference is I can pull the sick card. No one dares touch my food or else mom will slaughter them.” Leila nodded in Nick’s direction. ”Don’t worry about it. I’ve been sitting and laying down enough. I feel like standing for awhile.” She was glad when David quipped up to Jackson about her incident last night only he told it in a much more dramatic way. Made it seem like Leila had done a “movie” swoon and was near death. She rolled her eyes as she put her plate into the sink before she filled a glass with water from the faucet. Already she was feeling much better not that she had some “real” food in her system.
As she sipped at the clear liquid Leila’s gaze went to her dad again and she nodded before she dropped her own voice. ”Probably. But did you expect anything less?” Then Mark came up behind her and Daniel to stick his head between theirs. ”Secrets don’t make friends!” Leila smiled sweetly as she looked up at him. ”Neither does herpes which is why I don’t tell anyone about yours.” Mark apparently didn’t like that because he came behind Leila and slipped one arm under her shoulders and the other under her knees. ”You seem to forget that I am bigger then you. Let me remind you. Outside. In the snow.” Leila squealed and laughed as she struggled to get out of his arms. When he was getting close to the door, and while one of her other brothers was opening the door for him, her mother came up behind them and started to hit Mark in the head.
”Mark put her down right now before you hurt the baby!”
Mark sort of froze as did Leila. Once she was set down he looked back at their mother. ”What baby?” came from Mark’s mouth. Leila made no moves to say anything but just stared at her mother. She hadn’t wanted any of her brothers aside from Alex to know yet. A hand went up to her forehead to rub at it while she internally winced. Someone else repeated the question. Who she wasn’t sure as she was sort of shutting down. She hated confrontations with a passion and would do anything to avoid them any time. Finally she sighed when she felt Daniel come up by her side and dropped her hand. The right arm came up to rub at the upper half of her left one. ”Mine. I’m pregnant.” She looked around at everyone before her gaze rested on her mother with a displeased look on her face. ”I wanted to wait until later tonight or tomorrow to tell everyone.” Even once done rubbing her arm, Leila tensed up and leaned into Daniel for support. At least she was near him and no one could harm him if that’s what they wanted to do.

There were going to be so many variables about today that he was going to have to be on guard and make sure that everything was okay for Leila. She was the more important one right now. He didn’t care what happened to himself as long as she and the baby that is inside of her is okay. That news had forever changed his life and he could care less on what anyone thought of him. Right now he was a very happy man who was in a relationship with the girl he loved the most. The only downside to what was happening between them right now was the fact they weren’t married. That would be corrected soon though.
“You mean you’re father and brother are not ecstatic about our baby?” With the way her mom was acting he knew how happy she was that she was going to be getting a grandchild from her daughter. The fact Leila said that only one of the three was ecstatic meant that he knew he was in the fryer. Alex and her father were going to kill him! He could see it now! Just like in all of those horror movies. They were going to insist that they all go on a trip out to the island for a ‘bonding’ hike and that was where they were going to go Texas Chainsaw Massacre on his ass. “Is Alex even more pissed at me because of this?” Oh this was not good at all. This was probably the last straw in him losing his best friend forever.
He nodded his head in understanding where she was coming from. The excited part of him wanted to tell everyone that they were going to have a baby while the rational side could only picture her brothers holding him down while he had a shotgun to his head. He walked over to her and got on his knees looking up into her eyes with a smile on his face. “As my grandmother would say ‘it means your destined to be together;’ Or something along those lines.” His grandmother was one who in her old age had gotten into all those new age readings and crap. If he had to be honest it was all stupid. How the hell could crystals tell you anything?
When she pulled out the ultra sound picture he looked it over and smiled as he saw their baby there. His arms wrapped around her as he pulled her in placing a light kiss to her lips. “Yeah, we’re all going there for dinner still, right?” His family had gone all out on Christmas dinner in hopes that hers would show up there too. Now that they were going to be related and bound together it meant they should start doing family things together. Laughing he nodded his head at her joke. “Remember, boys carry diseases called babies.” The fact they could joke about it all meant a lot to him.
Reaching the kitchen the smell of food hit him and he sighed with how amazing it all smelled. The way the family was going about their business actually made him happy to be here. This was a normal family on Christmas morning. A laugh escaped his lips as he took a seat next to Leila then looked back up at Nick. “Well we all know Mark can be a bit of a pain in the ass.” Shaking his head he watched as her mom dished out Leila some eggs and then piled some on a plate for him. Giving her a smile and thank you he took the ketchup after Leila and put some on his eggs then buttered up some toast. “I didn’t expect him to want to kill me yet.” His voice was low as he talked to Leila. Picking up his toast he dropped some of the ketchup covered eggs onto it and took a bite. His attention turned to Jackson and he smiled lightly. “What’ve you been up to? It’s been a while.”
He finished his breakfast by the time Mark and Leila were going at it. The next thing he knew was Leila was being picked up and her mother was spilling the fact that she was pregnant to everyone in the kitchen. Oh shit! The looks he was getting from Mark and her father made him falter a little bit. Slowly he moved behind Leila and watched everyone in the kitchen. When she finally told them she was pregnant he slipped up behind her and slid his arms around her middle. No one was going to hurt his girl or his child.
Moving next to her his eyes moved and looked into everyone’s in there. This was one of the hardest moments of his life. When his eyes connected with Marks he noticed something was off. What? That was when he lunged forward and started hitting him in the chest knocking Daniel to the floor. His eyes widened as he Struggled under him finally pinning his arms behind his back. “Mark, calm down buddy. There’s no need to attack me.” With a sigh he looked up to Leila as he dragged Mark back up holding his arms behind him while he struggled.

MAYBE I'M A DIFFERENT BREED
[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 355px;]jackson watched leila eat, wondering why she was so hungry. she ate a good amount normally, but it wasn't normal for her to eat it up so fast. he raised an eyebrow as she rolled her eyes, seemingly excusing the whole thing. well, his aunt didn't look to happy, so jackson was sure there was something they weren't telling him. he was part of the family, wasn't he? normally, they told him everything. he wasn't going to get bent out of shape about it, though. he'd find out sooner or later. jackson brought his attention back to daniel. "school," he replied with a laugh, making it clear he didn't enjoy it. "i know.. what about you?" he'd had a bit more than school going on, like treatments. but again, they didn't need to know.
he smiled as he watched them interact, taking another sip of his orange juice and stealing some more food. jackson laughed at leila's comment, on her side, since mark was being nosy. he followed mark, with her in his arms, watching as he was getting ready to throw her out the door. he hung back some, his glass still in hand, grinning. then his aunt came along, looking pretty mad, to his surprise. this was normal, wasn't it? jackson froze, along with everyone else at the word 'baby'. well, that was.. awesome. unexpected for sure, but it sounded like good news to him. it made sense why his aunt and uncle had been shooting daggers daniel's way, though. he was about to step forward and congratulate the two of them, since no one else was, when mark suddenly lunged at daniel, knocking him down. he held his own, though, soon having mark's arms pinned behind his back. jackson wasn't sure, at this point, whether this was the best time to congratulate the two of them. mark was already furious.
of course, jackson wasn't afraid of a fight. in fact, he enjoyed them quite a bit. it had come to throwing punches with his cousins before, though he knew it wouldn't help the situation if that happened. plus, he was pretty sure his aunt would kill. jackson stepped forward, smiling, as he gave leila a big hug. "congrats, leila." he stepped back, patting his stomach lightly. "finally gonna put some weight on," he teased. he would have shook daniel's hand, too, but he was still constraining mark. jackson grinned, congratulating him, and giving mark a look. honestly, it didn't help anything to get mad. and he was still confused as to what there was to be mad about. he retreated then, back to his spot before his aunt had a chance to take a few whacks at him next. |

That didn’t mean things weren’t...complicated. Last night she had been more concerned explaining that no the pregnancy wouldn’t kill her but she left out the part that when not pregnant if she didn’t catch the hemorrhaging fast enough well...that could be bad. It was very, very rare for that to happen but it still could. Last night had been overwhelming information wise and emotionally. She didn’t need to pile it on more. Her shoulders shrugged upwards as she honestly didn’t know what the two men thought. ”I have yet to even see my dad. Mom told him after you guys helped me upstairs. I’d like to think he is…” She trailed off as she thought over her conversation with Alex. With him she really couldn’t get a read on it. ”And Alex I honestly couldn’t tell you. I think it’s just overwhelming for him and I don’t blame him. It was what? Two years ago that his fiancée had left him and told him in a letter that she had aborted their child. I think right now it’s just hard on him.” As far as Leila knew her and Daniel were the only ones who knew that tidbit of information about Alex’s ex and she wasn’t keen on telling anyone else about it. Especially their family. She just hoped this didn’t tear him and Daniel apart for good. She’d feel even more awful about it.
Leila was actually surprised at how calmly Daniel was taking all this. Most guys would be freaking right out but not him. She wasn’t sure if she should be worried about that or not. This feeling of being unsure sent her stomach into knots. That feeling made her nerves heightened and her heart race which made it difficult to smile at his grandmother’s thought process. ”Yes well let’s hope others see it the way she does.” Honestly she didn’t know what it meant. She wasn’t one who normally believed in “signs” or “fate”, even with her religious upbringing. Which this would be a shock to her more conservative family members. ”Yeah that’s the plan after all. I just may need a cat nap first depending on how crazy it is here.” If their talk didn’t take too long she should be able to sneak one in for an hour or so. Then she’d redo her hair and make-up before leaving.
Leila shook her head as she looked between Daniel and Nick. ”Oh they are not that bad. You just forgot what it means to be a Scott Nick. Mark and Davey are just reminding you.” She got some laughter out of her brothers while she prepared her plate of food. Thankfully they weren’t close to her and Daniel, only her mother was. ”He just found out. Give him some time. I am his only daughter.” Leila looked at her mother when saying this and his mother squeezed Daniel’s arm. Leila turned so she leaned back against the counter while she ate. It felt good to stretch her legs and it felt even better to have her whole family around her right now. Leila was one who really cared deeply for her family. Everyone had different personalities but that’s what made them amazing. They all just fit so well together and she loved it.
Daniel fit in her family too.
Unfortunately it didn’t seem like her brothers were reacting that way. Leila had to jump aside before Mark knocked her over. David had failed in catching him before their older brother attacked Daniel. Nicholas looked like his head was about to explode while Alex just stood off to the side. She couldn’t read the eldest brother at all. Tears began to well up in her eyes as she watched everyone begin to explode. Daniel dragged Mark up while he held his hands behind his back. When David got over the shock he reached for Mark and pulled him back near a wall and made sure he didn’t move. Leila wiped at her cheeks before Jackson came to her and pulled her into a hug. She gripped him tightly as a few more tears escaped. ”Thank you,” she said before she dropped her voice and whispered to him, ”It means a lot that you’re supportive.” When he pulled away and made his little quip she laughed nervously. ”Yes I guess I will. Make it easier to beat everyone up.”
Apparently during her embrace with her cousin, Nicholas decided to get in Daniel’s face so much that her brother had Daniel pushed against the door frame that led to the kitchen. Leila made her way behind him. ”Nichoals step off.” Leila puleld at her brother’s shoulder but he shrugged her off literally. ”Go away Leila.” Leila was in shock and her mother wrapped her arms around Leila’s shoudler as they just watched everything unfold. ”You better do the right thing by my sister or I swear to God…” She saw her brother’s nostrils flare in his rage. ”You will marry her and you will take care of this child or I will take care of you.” Nicholas went to strike Daniel but Leila screamed, ”STOP!” as loud as she could. Her body practically doubles over from the force she used to yell out. Her mother rubbed at her back soothingly to try and calm her, telling Leila she needed to clam down before she fainted again.
”Would you all just stop it now! Why can’t you be happy for me? You al know my doctors said I may not be able to have kids on my own and here I am doing just that. You know how much of a mess I’ve been for well over a year and still you’re getting angry.” Her head shook in disbelief as she tried to keep them from flowing too hard. ”Nick, we’re not getting married. We can raise this baby without being forced into something we don’t want yet.” Leila wasn’t trying to be cruel but it was unfair of them to even suggest such a thing. This was the twenty-first century, not the nineteenth. ”You know what? Why bother explaining myself. Obviously none of you care about me or this child enough to try to be civil.” Leila moved away from her mother as she moved towards the stairs. ”Merry Christmas everyone,” she spat at bitterly before she ran up the stairs. Once to her room she slammed her door and locked it. She didn’t want anyone to bother her.
Leila wasn’t sure how long she spent upstairs before she decided she needed out of the house. She knew it couldn’t be more then a half hour tops. She dressed herself in her new jacket, hats, gloves and scarf before she grabbed her purse. All Leila knew was she needed out of this house. As she went down the stairs she dug around for her keys. She said nothing to whoever was in the living room and kitchen as she made her way out the front door. Her boots crushed at the snow that covered the walkway as she went for her car. It may be Christmas Day but Leila no longer wanted to be near her family. Any of them.

A long sigh left his lips as she started to explain everything to him. So her mother told her father after they got her into bed? Well at least she hadn’t told him while he was still there or else there would be a dead Daniel being hidden somewhere in a shallow grave. That would have been so bad for him it wouldn’t have been funny. “I feel like your dad is going to kill me. Do you think I should watch my back the whole time I’m here?” What? The man was scary and he was nervous to be around her father alone now. On the other hand! If he killed Daniel that would make Leila hate him because then her baby daddy would be dead. “We don’t have to worry about pulling a her or him. We’re different and I know that we’ll stick together and raise our beautiful kid together.” There was no need for anyone to worry.
When he finished the food on his plate he turned back to Leila and nodded his head. “My family will be happy about it. If they’re not what’s the worst they could do to me?” A small laugh left his lips as she spoke about a cat nap before going over. “You going to be well rested in case you have to go to war with my mom?” There was no doubt about it that he would side with Leila over his own mother on this issue. If there was one thing really important in his life it was Leila and their child. Nothing was going to tear them apart.
Being a Scott was crazy. The way their family was it was taking his family and doing a complete one eighty. His cousins dared not act like any of Leila’s siblings acted. If there was one thing he could prove it was Leila was still an amazing woman. It didn’t matter if his aunt was stuck up and talked bad about someone she didn’t like, but the minute she says something about Leila it would be world war three. His arm slipped around Leila as her words brought him out of his thoughts. “Okay but I wouldn’t suggest sending him and I to the island to go fishing…one of us might not come back and I have a strong feeling he’d be the one coming back.” Very very strong feeling he would be the one on the island still.
That was when everything went all to hell. His eyes widened when Nick had him shoved against a wall after he had gotten Mark away. Oh great, he didn’t need to be on the island he was going to die right here. Now all he had to do was wait for her father to come in with a shotgun and blast a hole into his stomach. When Nick began to yell he closed his eyes and waited for the hit. Oh god, he was to young to die! That was when he heard Leila yelling at all of them. What? He did nothing wrong!
When Leila ran upstairs and slammed the door it took a while for him to get free. Thankfully her mother was there to help him out. Silently he made his way up the stairs and paced then sat down waiting for her to come out of her room. Come on Leila! When she finally came out he stood up and went after her. “Leila, wait!” He followed her out and to her car getting on the other side and trying to get in. “Come on unlock the car.”

AND HOW I GOT TO WHERE I AM. BUT THESE STORIES DON’T MEAN ANYTHING, WHEN YOU’VE GOT NO ONE TO TELL THEM TO. IT’S TRUE, I WAS MADE FOR- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - you | [atrb=width,240][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,10,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i56.tinypic.com/2zgu9hc.jpg); width: 240px; padding-top:10px;] Leila went to Daniel and cupped her hands around his face. ”He won’t kill you. Once he gets over the initial shock he will be thrilled just like my mother. Just wear a bulletproof vest until then.” Leila wished Daniel wasn’t so jittery about this situation. This was their first grandchild. Once the moment of confusion and anger passed then everything would be fine. Everyone would only be upset because they weren’t married and this was obviously unplanned. That was pretty hard to swallow for them. Once her and Daniel figured thing out and they saw how happy she was about this pregnancy they would definitely come around. ”I know we won’ be.” That didn’t mean it eased all her worries.
She felt some relief when he said his family would be happy. His younger sister hadn’t had any kids yet and he was at a good age to start a family. It was hard not to be happy, at least form their perspective when she thought about it. ”Well now I am. Before it was just so I won’t fall asleep during dinner. You’re making me paranoid now. First saying your parents will be happy then asking if I’m preparing for war with your mom. Confusing much.” Leila usually got pretty tired through out the day which is the only reason she said anything about a nap. But she also knew this whole situation would be weird. Her and Daniel came from two completely different worlds. Her family couponed, mending clothing where they could and meticulously planned every weeks finances. His family, well, they never had to worry about that a day in their life prior. Now that he said something about going to war with his mom she wondered if any of his family would think that she planned their pregnancy to trap him into a relationship or tie him down with a ridiculous amount of child support. Leila wasn’t like that but if an outsider looked at this situation, they may think that.
Leila loved her family deeply. That was something that never wavered-her love for them. Even when they seriously upset her, she still loved every person. That went through her mind as she paced around on her own in her room. Photos of every family member littered the walls and flat surfaces. Ones of her friends and Daniel were mixed in as well. Leila had always been one for having memories plastered everywhere. A board pinned with concert and movie tickets, some fabric flowers from school dances and even some dried flowers hung upside down. She had some shoe and hat boxes filled just with mementos she didn’t want to let go of piled in her closet. The most filled with things pertaining to her love for Daniel. All these memories were suffocating her right now with the hurt she felt concerning her brother’s reactions. Mark and Nick had no right to attack Daniel like that. It was sad when their cousin seemed more thrilled then her own siblings. It broke Leila’s heart.
In her hurry to get out she didn’t even notice Daniel was waiting by her room. When he shouted out to her she shook her head. ”Leave me alone, Daniel.” Nick started to call after her as well but she told him to bug off but not in such a kind way. Their parents seemed to be containing her siblings inside the best they could so that “they” could sort this out. Oh, Leila had no intentions of sorting it out right now. Her thoughts and emotions were everywhere and it would not be pretty if she stayed here to try to work things out. Once the door was shut and the car locked, she enjoyed the silence for the few moments she had it until Daniel came out after her. She tossed her purse on the seat next to her as she started her car. Seeing as she had an older car, she leaned across to the passenger side and rolled the window down just enough to talk to him. ”Daniel I just want some time to myself. There’s no reason for me to stay here when my family isn’t exactly being supportive of things right now.”
