RESIDENTS ASKING, “WHY?” ARTICLE BY ADAM BOYD; PHOTO BY ERICA WALKER Twenty-three people were killed in Hope Habor, Maine as explosions and fire ravaged the town last Saturday, November the 8th. Residents say the explosions began around 9:30pm as many were leaving the regularly scheduled town meeting. Police and firemen were immediately called to several scenes of destruction. Upon investigation, police discovered that bombs had been planted in three boats that were docked in the harbor. The fire spread along the docks killing nine people. One was discovered in the town's church, no deaths reported as of yet. Another in the car of resident Clarence Winslet (Sr). The explosion caused fire to spread to several shops in the area leaving eleven more dead. Mr Winselt told police that he had parked his vehicle in front of his nieces shop (Hope Harbor Tide Trinkets) earlier that evening, to walk to the town meeting. The owner and one other person-presumably her father-were hospitalized after the explosion but died a few hours later. It was later reported that an explosion took place at the house of Connor McLaughlin. One was reported dead, two children rescued. No names have been released. The boat of Matthew Tyler was also found. Police say it was not in the harbor at the time of the explosions, but found later in the evening in the bay. It had caught fire but not by explosives. The bodies of Tyler and two others (believed to be his girlfriend and daughter) were discovered inside the half charred vessel. Police are lead to believe that it was Tyler who planted all the explosives and locked himself and his two victims inside the boat. Police have yet to discover Tyler's motives but an inside source say he has had a history of depression. The investigation is on going. Residents of the town are devastated. One woman told us, “This town is quiet, peaceful. We all know each other and are practically like family. I can't understand why anyone would want to do this to us!” It is indeed a devastating tragedy that will not soon be forgotten. Funerals are set to begin today. A candle light vigil is scheduled to be held Saturday, November 15th, at the Town Hall.
