[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i56.tinypic.com/2zgu9hc.jpg); width: 440px; padding-top:10px;]the girl in the moon --- Lexi smiled at the woman before she elft the room. This particular patient had come in after passing out. From the way it looked it was a diabetic episode. Again. The woman was a regular here at Hope Regional Hospital. She came at least twice a month after having an episode. Many of the staff had their theories that maybe she was doing it on purpose but none of them could really judge. It wasn’t their place. Lexi instead asked her the pertinent questions, inserted an IV and checked her blood sugar. While she walked away from the room, she whistled and jotted notes in the chart for the doctor. She fliped it closed before she set it back on the slot at the desk. She leaned on it and looked at the charge nurse, Brenda. ”Please, please, please tell me I can go home early because I am incredible and all the patients left?” Brenda left and handed Lexi another chart while the younger nurse pouted playfully. They both laughed as Lexi looked over the chart.
After another hour of running around rooms and checking on patients, Lexi finally had a moment to sit down. She rubbed at her cheeks as she turned to a couple of the other nurses. The group talked about how one was going away for the weekend with his girlfriend. There were plenty of jokes around and Lexi joined in. despite everything she had been through, she could still enjoy life. Sometimes one might be shocked to hear that if they knew of her past. Most people knew her husband had passed, but not how nor how guilty Lexi felt. Very few people knew she had once been pregnant. In fact only Brenda and one other nurse here knew about it as they were friends with her family. They were sworn to secrecy though. Lexi didn’t like the looks given to her when people found out what had happened. She despised it.
Her left hand twirled the ring that was on her right ring finger. It was very special to her as her late husband had it made in memory of their song. Their son’s birthday was even engraved along the inside of the band and the birthstone was aquamarine, for the month their son had graced their world very briefly. Today she wore a scrub top that matched the ring-a lovely sky blue color that matched the brown ER nursing scrub pants. She had a tank top underneath as well as she felt more comfortable that way. Her hair was braided along one side then pulled back into a bun and she only wore some cover-up and mascara. So not her usual self. When outside of the hospital she loved to do the 1950’s pin-up style for make-up. Lexi loved the 40’s through the 60’s. and the flapper years. Yes, she was a bit of a vintage girl. Her cousin even asked her-with much detest-if she was a hipster and going all Democratic on him(their family is very Republican). She just laughed and told him not everyone who dresses like she does becomes a Dem.
Lexi turned away from the conversation and went to make some more notations in her charts. She rubbed at her eyes as she neared the last one. There were only two patients left as they rest were discharged. One was their diabetic and they were waiting for a room upstairs to be made for her. The other was someone with a concussion being observed for a couple more hours. With a sigh, Lexi put the charts aside and put her arms on the desk and set her head in it. Maybe five minutes later she felt someone poking the back of her head. ”Whoever is touching me better have a very good reason. Like coffee. Or that the Tenth Doctor is here with the TARDIS and wants me to be his new companion and if that’s the case, I quit.”

SOMETIMES I FIND IT HARD• to believe there's someone else who could be •JUST AS MESSED UP AS ME Oliver was settling into the job at the hospital and so far, he was enjoying it quite a bit. Some days were harder then others. But he got through them all. So far, he had jet to lose a patient, which was encouraging. Even with the fact that most of even their emergency cases weren't that serious. Certainly nothing life threatening. Oliver hadn't even had to perform a surgery yet. He was glad for that. But to be perfectly honest, he had been itching just a little to do something more than band aids and head wraps. The closest he'd come was setting the broken leg of a little girl, which had been quite awful actually, because no amount of pain killers they could give her, would take that pain away. And he'd done some stitches. It never ceased to amaze him that he could he sew someone's cut up and it looked beautiful, but he couldn't sew a straight line in a seem on one of his own shirts.
Though Oliver couldn't say he had quite become friends with most of the staff, he had be come quite close with Cameron and a pretty young nurse named Alexandra, whom everyone called Lexi. She was a sweet young nurse who worked at the hospital and had become Oliver's friend and preferred assistant. He was comfortable around her and since neither of them were looking for a relationship, unlike most every other single staff member at the hospital, they could be purely friends without the pressure or worry of being more.
It wasn't just Oliver that Lexi set at ease. It was most of the patients too. Oliver swore that many of them came back with phantom symptoms, just so they could see Lexi, especially some of the teenage boys. Oliver found it quite funny and wondered if she was on to them yet.
As Oliver made his rounds in the emergency room, a little boy with a split lip came in. He had slipped on some ice and it on the the curb. He would need at lest 2 stitches possibly as many 6. After his initial consultation with the boy and his mother, Oliver excused himself, saying he'd return shortly. Going to find Lexi to help him with the young man, he found her on her desk. Oliver poked her gently. He laughed at her words that followed his touch. Eleventh Doctor....TARDIS is lost...again...Don't worry, we'll get it back....But for now we have a little boy with a split lip, needs stitches and I need your help to keep him calm. Oliver said, as he grabbed as he took the pen from behind his ear, wrote something on the boys chart, returned the pen to its place, and walked out the door. Come on Cross. He called from the hall.
When she joined him from the little boys room a few moments later, he smiled at her. Ahhh Jeremiah... He smiled at the boy. This is Nurse Cross...best nurse we have on staff. She is going to assist me while we do your sutures. Oliver explained. She's going to numb your lip and I promise you won't even feel that much. Just close your eyes and hold my hand and it'll be over before you can say "John Smith"! He winked at the boys mother then nodded for Lexi to begin.
As the little boy held Oliver's hand, he gave it a little squeeze. He watched Lexi expertly maneuver the needle as as promised, it didn't hurt the boy at all. She had such a gentle touch. Whens he was finished, they waited a few minutes for the pain killers to set in, then Oliver stitched him up, telling him to hold Lexi's hand this time. When he was finished he wrote a prescription for the young man, some instructions one what he could and couldn't eat and said to come back in 3 weeks to get the stitches removed.
So....coffee? Oliver asked her, meaning, did she still need some, as they exited the patients room. I mean...I was just going to go to the cafeteria and get some...Would you like to join me? Oliver clarified. Of course he was not asking her out on a date. That was the furthest thing from his mind and he was sure Lexi knew that. They had an unspoken understanding about themselves and their friendship.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i56.tinypic.com/2zgu9hc.jpg); width: 440px; padding-top:10px;]the girl in the moon --- Lexi turned her head and peered up at Doctor Welcott while she chuckled. Ah, she loved working with a British man who could keep up with her geek obsession. Not many people saw this side of Lexi in it’s entirety and many wouldn’t guess it. You know the type-loves D&D, will shout at the noobs on WoW and Call of Duty, Trekkie, browncoat, Star Wars loving Whovian. And those were just the major categories. The list goes on and on. She spent most of her childhood alone because it was comforting to her. When she ventured places aside from her home, it was often to the local gaming store where she felt…safe. Good thing Lexi’s cousin was fairly geeky himself though she had a strong feeling Leila didn’t know how much so. That was bound to be interesting.
As she stretched, a groan left her lips. ”But Eleven is so awkward and that chin of his is huge. Now Ten-he’s perfect.” She chuckled before her smile faltered a little. Helping children and pregnant women were always hard on her. Still, she kept it to herself and never told anyone why it was hard. Lexi grabbed her pen and notebook for quick notes and shoved it in the pocket of her scrubs as she followed Oliver. As they made their way into the room, a large smile spread across her face. She introduced herself to the mother before she got to Jeremiah’s eye level. ”Hi there Jeremiah. Ignore the mad man with the crazy hair and call me Lexi. Nurse Cross just sounds so boring.” She went to wash her hands before she donned gloves and made sure to let the air escape from the syringe with the local anesthetic. Lexi gave Oliver a kind smile as he held the kids hand. Her own pulled the boy’s out in a slight pout before she inserted the tip of the needle.
Once done and it was set aside, she tossed her gloves. ”There we go. Now, I want to hold this handsome young man’s hand. And sorry Oliver, but I think I am much prettier to be holding hands with then you.” When the two switched spots she made some very noticeable hints that his lip being so numb was the perfect excuse for something really cold or really spicy since his lips would be numb for awhile. In fact, it would be most hilarious to see what made Jeremiah’s lips start to work again. When Oliver was done, the boy let out a laugh and called Lexi silly. ”Well I may be silly but better to be silly then a grumpy face like the doctor here.” Her eyes shined as she looked up at Oliver. She was sure to pay later but it was worth it to get a smile from his face.
As they exited the room, she rubbed at her neck. Children were so hard on her. Especially now that it was the beginning of February which meant it was drawing closer to March 27th. She felt air being slowly compressed form her lungs whenever she thought too long about it so she tried not to at this moment. It was hard, though, with Leila being pregnant. The young girl’s bump was a little more noticeable now and Lexi’s heart cached. And to top it off Leila and Daniel’s wedding was coming up fast. A double stab at her heart.
She nodded at Oliver. ”Yes coffee is very much needed. I don’t get to rest very much on my day’s off with Danny’s wedding coming up. This stupid town law is ridiculous. It’s why I got married a couple towns over.” Lexi was open with Oliver that she was a widow and had lost a baby. Just she hadn’t told him how her husband had died, the guilt she felt over that nor about delivering her lifeless child. That was all a bit heavy. When they got to the cafeteria, Lexi grabbed a coffee, a bagel and some cream cheese. She fished out some cash to pay then went to a table with Oliver. ”Are you going to this joyous town even t as my cousin becomes a blubbering fool or will you be smart and hide away least some random girl asks you to do very inappropriate things to her in the bathroom.” This wedding was going to be massive and the amount of booze bought for it was even more unreal. It was bound to be an interesting occasion. Lexi just hoped she wouldn’t lose it.

SOMETIMES I FIND IT HARD• to believe there's someone else who could be •JUST AS MESSED UP AS ME And that is precisely why I am Eleven. Oliver said with that awkward crooked grin of his. Yes, awkward was the right word for the gangly Brit. He had crazy hair that was impossible to keep, even if he did put any effort into it, which was not very often at all. His eyes were close together, some said too close, his nose was rather large in proportion, his lips were small, but his chin was rather large and square. Yes, every awkward indeed. But at least he had a discernible chin, where as the 10th Doctor hardly had one at all.
As they arrived at the patient's room, Lexi went to work, making the little boy smile and giggle as he Oliver had known she would. She had such a bedside manner. Oli really thought she should have become a Doctor instead of a Nurse, but that had been Lexi's choice. Who was he to try and convince her she had missed her calling? And rather Cross. He added to her comment as she told young Jeremiah to call her Lexi. For having the last name of Cross, Oli had found that Lexi wasn't very cross at all in general. In fact, she was the least cross person he'd ever met, aside from Lilian of course.
Ahh...you're a champ Jeremiah...worst bits over! Oliver encouraged the boy as Lexi finished with the needle and they trade places. Oliver pulled out the things he needed from a nearby drawer and set them on a tray. Oliver smiled at her next comment, which made Jeremiah laugh again. Well of course...one would have to be a fool to dispute that, right Jeremiah?" He winked at the child and began to sew up his lip. This is very true! He said at her last comment, about being silly rather than grumpy. Though he wasn't too terribly grumpy these days. Certain times yes, but overall, Oliver was doing very well. And he never acted grumpy with his patients.
Oliver nodded smiling. Yes...it does seem odd to have to have strangers at one's wedding...Perhaps when the law was instated the community was much smaller and they all knew each other and didn't want to offend by not inviting certain parties to their ceremonies. He mused playfully. Oliver had known that Lexi had once been married and that tragically, she had lost her husband and their child, but he didn't know how. Oli had also been open with her about Lilian and all the circumstances quite well. Oliver and Lexi understood each other's grief and struggles better than anyone else who hadn't been through such a thing could.
Oliver got himself a coffee and a pastry and insisted on paying for Lexi's when they got to the check out. They sat at a table together and began to enjoy their purchases. Oliver laughed at her comments about the wedding. Lexi was always making him laugh. No...I don't do weddings really. He hadn't been to a wedding since his own. It was too painful. Even when some of his cousins and close friends had gotten married, he just wasn't able to bring himself to attend. He knew if he did, he would break down. Perhaps he had moved beyond that now, but he didn't know Lexi's cousin and his fiancee and he would have felt quite like he was crashing the event. But from what I hear, it's an even to be remembered for ages to come...it shall live down in the history of the town as the finest wedding ever hosted....until the next one. Oliver teased, knowing he could do so without Lexi getting offended. Is it hard for you to go though? Oliver asked, not meaning to turn their conversation to serious. To weddings I mean...I haven't attended one since Lil died....Just too many memories that are still too painful. He looked down and shook his head slightly, then took a sip of his coffee.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i56.tinypic.com/2zgu9hc.jpg); width: 440px; padding-top:10px;]the girl in the moon --- ”You wish you were Eleven. Then you’d have plenty of girls wanting to be your companion. Aside from me, of course. I’m loyal to my Ten. Though, Four is pretty great too.” Lexi followed him with a smile on her face but a prick of pain in her heart. She used to geek out with her late husband but he was no longer around. She brushed it off because she was at work and couldn’t think about him right now. Right now she had a job to do and that job was to help take care of a little boy. Jeremiah was being rather good for a kid with a split lip and didn‘t even flinch as she put the needle in. then again, Lexi has been a nurse since she was twenty so seven years now. That and with her bachelors degree she had a lot of skills nurses with just a two year degree didn’t. of course much of it had to do with practice and job experience but continued education helped as well.
Lexi loved making patients smile and laugh, especially children. The hospital could be a terribly frightening place to some people so making them feel at ease was a top priority. Some of the staff, well, they just did the basics of their job and moved on. And while she understood why it wasn’t a good thing to do working in the medical field. She knew a lot were because some people got into it for the money. Lexi wasn’t one of them. Being a “trust fund baby” as they are called, she technically didn’t have to work. Just she enjoyed it immensely. She hated to just sit around the house and do nothing. Even when Lexi was sick and had to stay in bed, it was torture for her.
”Well, yeah that’s pretty much why it was established. I just don’t see why it hasn’t been overturned yet. Personally, I think a lot of people in town like being able to go to them.” Lexi herself was not a fan of the whole law or even weddings in general right now. She was dreading going to this thing with so many people around. Plus, like Oliver said, it was odd having strangers at your wedding. Lexi’s was a very small and intimate ceremony. Then again, not everyone in her life agreed with her getting married so young. They said the two should wait until they were done school but, really, what difference would it have made? They had already been together for three, almost four, years. They were committed to each other. Even now it was proof. Lexi hadn’t even been on a date since her husband’s passing. And she only just went back to her maiden name a few months prior.
Lexi jokingly argued with Oliver about him paying for her items but finally relented. She was just too exhausted to fight about it at the moment. Normally she slept well while at home but being “crunch time” with her cousin’s wedding planning it meant longer hours up helping Leila where she needed it. Thankfully Lexi had already been married so she knew all the best ways to cut costs and to calm the jittery bride. Leila being pregnant really did not help things. Sometimes she felt like she was more a counselor then anything else these days. Plus, she was trying to help ease any worried concerning the pregnancy. Yeah, Lexi felt a bit overwhelmed some days.
Lexi spread the cream cheese on her bagel and took a bite, taking care not to get it everywhere. After she took a sip of her coffee, she nodded in understanding. ”Normally I don’t do them either,” she said very softly. She looked into her cup of coffee as she swirled the liquid around gently. Distraction was always good to keep from breaking down. At least she never turned to alcohol for any of it. Lexi was proud of that. Even when she had some it was minimal. ”It will be. Daniel’s spared no expense to make it special for Leila. I think she’s a bit overwhelmed, though, and the pregnancy doesn’t help things at all.”
Lexi’s smile faltered and the humor in her eyes dimmed. She put her half eaten bagel aside as her stomach began to turn over. ”I don’t want too go.” She reached for a napkin and ran it between her hands, more for something to do with them. ”The only reason I’m going is Daniel has been like a brother to me. He flew out, no questions asked, when I got the call that my husband’s boat was caught in a storm. He stayed for the funeral service and gave me a place to live when I moved back so I didn’t have to be alone.” Lexi swallowed a lump as she shook her head. ”So for this one day I will do my best to hold myself together. He needs me there to keep him calm and I will do that.”
The each sipped their coffee in silence for a moment. She looked at him and smiled weakly. ”So I’m guessing you’re part of the skeleton crew for the afternoon?” The hospital would be running on the bare minimum of staff that day it seems from glancing at he schedule. Lexi volunteered to come in for a few hours later if they needed her. She’d need the distraction after that.

SOMETIMES I FIND IT HARD• to believe there's someone else who could be •JUST AS MESSED UP AS ME
Oliver laughed at Lexi and shook his head. Such a child...you are such a child. Of course he was only playing with her. He liked to tease and have fun with her. Oliver liked the way she laughed and smiled. They had become such grand friends, nearly best he would say. Oliver enjoyed being able to make someone laugh again and having someone around to make him laugh. Oliver still wasn't 100% and probably never would be. Many days were still, almost unbearably hard. Sometimes Lexi reminded him of Lilian, just little things she would say or do. Of course, this wasn't to say that Oliver was attracted to Lexi, because he wasn't really. They were just friends and that's what he told everyone that liked to tease the two.
People like to be in other's business. Oliver said, about the wedding. Such a think would never be tolerated in London. He laughed at himself sounding so posh. But of course it was true. People in London were proper and posh. At weddings they wanted family, friends, and business contacts. Anyone else they didn't tolerate. There was even a case where a pair of wedding crashers had been thrown in jail for the act.
Oliver smiled as Lexi said that Daniel had spared no expense on the wedding. It reminded him of his own to Lilian. Lil had no parents, so there was no one to pay for the wedding. Oliver had given her everything she wanted and more. It truly had seemed like something out of a fairytale. Lillian had always been well organized and creative. He didn't think there was a single thing she had overlooked int he planning. From the groomsmen's boutineers to the way each rose petal sat on the table clothes. Well, I hope it will be a really special day for them. Oliver hoped for Leila's sake, that everything came off without a hitch. He knew that was something brides were always worried about. As if they didn't have enough on their minds.
You're strong and brave Lexi....More so then myself....I envy you. Oliver respected Lexi for going to the wedding, even though it wasn't particularly what she wanted to do and it would be difficult for her. But she was selfless int hat manner.
Oliver nodded at her question and looked around a little. That would be me....lets just hope we don't have any real bad emergencies. Everyone thinks it's acceptable to make me call people and ask them to pick up a shift...just because I'm the new guy. He didn't mind calling too much really. But it was somewhat annoying that a lot of things got pushed off onto him, by the other doctors. Wasn't that what the nurses were for...in part. To assist the doctors? Even if it was "only" by making a phone call. There's got to be something we can do around here to get more people in. Better benefits or something. The hospital couldn't run with such low staff and maintain high care standards for too long.
